The obsession around Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy fascinates me far more than Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy herself.

I see the same radiant woman that you do. I love how when you describe her, it sounds like anyone, but when you see a photo of her, she stands alone. I love how her minimalistic style makes a maximalist such as myself, impressed. To me, while compelling, those are not enough for obsession.

I think one of the reasons we’re so infatuated with her, her life, her love story, her body, her everything, is that from the very limited catalogue of photos available, we witness a striking range of emotion. Combine this with the fact that she never gave an interview, clearly repelled by the very idea of exposing herself to our para-social impulses, we’ve morphed her into this amalgamation of who we think she is. Like a moth to a flame, I am both drawn and repelled to write this in equal measure.

I felt like such a voyeur, searching, reading, immeshing with everything I did. I just know that she would fucking hate that I’m writing this at all, and who am I but yet one more person to try and piece together someone elses life through media scraps and gotcha-headlines? If you read what people wrote about her then, compared to what they write about her now, you wouldn’t think it was the same person. My resounding thought during this entire process was: At least Diana was loved while she was alive. Because that’s the thing, we fucking hated Carolyn. Or we loved to hate Carolyn. Abusive, obsessive, vindictive, she was a prized butterfly in our collection. We caught her, pinned her down, and resented her for not flying.

The more I read about Carolyn, the more I’m convinced that your style is a self-fulfilling prophecy. What you wear shapes how you behave, how the world responds, and who you eventually become. Therefore, style is not metaphorical. It’s behavioral.

Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy never got to write her own prophecy. The clothes she wore when she was trying to disappear from sight are the ones we’ve latched on to all these years later, and theres something sickly and so American to me about the fact that she never wanted to be an icon, so we burned her alive and when she was dead, we finally got what we wanted.

THE HEIR

Abdicated Style × Expressed Identity

The Heir doesn’t dress to be seen, she just is. When I initially began this piece, I was certain that this would be Carolyn’s defining archetype. How incorrect I was.

Carolyn Bessette grew up in Greenwich, Connecticut, the youngest of three daughters of a cabinet-maker and a public school administrator. She grew up adjacent to wealth but not immersed in it, which highlights the key difference in her style to those in the truly affluent world, I don’t think she had anything to prove. She went to Boston University and stayed in Boston after she graduated, working as a saleswoman at the Calvin Klein store at the Chestnut Hill Mall during the day and moonlighting at marketing nightclubs in the evening. On one fateful day, she was noticed by Susan Sokol, the president of Calvin Klein Collection, who came through on a sales visit. Thinking Carolyn was the embodiment of the Calvin Klein muse, she was Cinderella-ed to the New York office, where she spent the next seven years being promoted from VIP of Client Relations, to Director of Publicity, and finally Director of Show Productions. She earned what biographers describe as a low six-figure salary — which in today's money is approximately $210,000 (not bad for a girl who was ringing up discount merchandise a few years earlier).

The Calvin Klein office had a dress code so precise it read more like a manifesto. Employees were required to wear CK head-to-toe, surrounded by walls that were repainted white daily to cover scuff marks. Nail polish was banned, makeup had to be near-invisible, desks had to be bare. The entire point was uniformity, and it seemed to work quite well.

At first glance, CBK was the white knight of this aesthetic. But the more i looked the more I saw someone different. Past the minimalism, buried beneath my assumptions, was someone else: Carolyn, who wore blue nail polish. Carolyn, who pulled shirts from the menswear section and paired Chuck Taylors with midi skirts. Carolyn, who wore a leather jacket to the office as a blouse. I want to be very clear about these actions because it’s so easy to misunderstand: Carolyn was not being subversive. I don’t think for a minute her instinct was to rebel, frankly, I don’t know if this word would have even crossed her mind. This isn’t the same behavioral calling card that makes some people wear funny socks with proper suits, a nod to her hidden individuality. This is the very nature of The Heir. The Heir doesn't carefully construct her style, doesn't flirt with social codes or try to paint outside the lines. It simply already exists, fully formed. She knew her style the way some people know their side of the bed, and in everything I poured over to write this piece, there is not a single shred of evidence that she ever deliberated over what to wear. Carolyn produced an enormous amount of evidence of her taste without appearing to think about it at all. There is no gap between who she is and how she looks.

Knowing this makes what comes next much harder to write, because what comes next is the woman she was forced to become, by people who had no idea what they were destroying.

THE PROXY

Habituated Style x Emergent Identity

She stopped wearing jewelry after the marriage, not wanting to draw attention to her hands, neck, or ears. The softer silhouettes and light bohemian influence morphed into a near-total black palette, sharper silhouettes with tighter frames. She wore almost exclusively Prada, which was significant to me to learn, as Prada in the mid-1990s was not the status symbol it is now. Prada’s aesthetic under Miuccia Prada was specifically, deliberately anti-glamour, the kind of woman that does not do frills or lace, sharp and intellectual in a way that fashion at the time mostly wasn’t. When she reached for Prada, she was reaching for control. What we idolize and obsess over is the outfit of who she was forced to be, not who she naturally was.

The irony of labeling her the queen of effortless elegance is nearly as brutal as it is total.

On February 25th 1996, a photographer crept into the background of Washington Square Park and filmed the argument that changed America’s perception of Carolyn forever. She was allegedly furious because her fiancé was being manipulated: John had been asked to be the best man for a man who was barely an acquaintance, supposedly orchestrated by the bride-to-be who placed John next to the New York Times society editor for the evening. The footage shows them screaming, John removing her engagement ring from her finger, Carolyn lunging on him from behind, John sitting on a curb, and their dog Friday, who had nowhere to go. The National Enquirer bought the photographs and ran an eight-page spread in the Daily News. CBS bought the video and broadcast it over five consecutive days beginning March 11, 1996. Within weeks, Carolyn left Calvin Klein.

After the park footage ran, Ethel Kennedy, the matriarch of the Kennedy family, told Carolyn at twenty-nine years old that she would never be given the benefit of the doubt again. Despite her repeated pleas for privacy, the press did everything in their power to eat her alive. She was called the ice queen, ungrateful shrew, thin enough to be a drug addict, not good enough for her husband, her style dismissed by W Magazine and Vanity Fair as throwaway chic. Carolyn understood that how people saw her wasn’t going to change, and the way she started dressing is proof of it. She used style as a way to manage a kind of attention she never asked for and could not escape.

The Proxy is someone whose style has been shaped by the room she is in rather than the person she is. Her identity is still there, still alive, but it comes through in fragments, in the small choices she makes within the boundaries of what the situation allows. She looks composed. She looks intentional. From the outside it reads as self-possession. From the inside it is management.

She found the degree of latitude she could work within and microdosed her personality in a well-managed wardrobe.

THE GHOST

Abdicated Style x Suppressed Identity

The Heir and the Ghost can look identical from the outside, both apparently unbothered, both seemingly effortless. The Heir dresses without thinking because nothing needs to be proven. The Ghost dresses without thinking because there is no more energy left to spend.

By 1998, her world had physically contracted. She left her apartment before 7am to avoid the paparazzi, and she hadn’t worked in two years. The tabloids that called her ice queen, gold digger, and coke head hadn’t relented, engorged by the fact that the couple was in marriage counseling. Anthony Radziwill, John’s closest friend, was dying of cancer. They were, to put it bluntly, the worst of times. Carolyn's wardrobe during this time was significantly less documented, but in the photographs from her last public appearances she still looked composed, though not as carefree as she once was. This is what makes the Ghost position so difficult to see in real time, and so obvious in retrospect. Her ability to look so poised when she felt so disconnected is a marvelous show of control. Chermayeff said it plainly years later: "Even her closest friends and husband sometimes couldn't see it for what it was. Everyone thought, come on, figure this out. Only in hindsight I see that no one was really fully there for her in that way."

On July 16th 1999, John, Carolyn and her sister Lauren departed Essex County Airport in New Jersey at 8:38pm, thirteen minutes after sunset. Approximately an hour after takeoff, over open water in the dark, John experienced spatial disorientation, a condition in which a pilot loses his reference to the horizon. Suffering an uncontrolled spiral, the plane crashed into the water below. Within 30 seconds, all three passengers died on impact.

Five days later and 120 feet below the surface, the bodies of Lauren Bessette, John F. Kennedy Jr., and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy were discovered, still strapped in their seats. At only 33 years old, the same publication that labeled her throwaway chic declared in her obituary that she was “arguably the only true successor to Jackie’s legacy.”

The woman they treated like an animal at the zoo became the woman they spent the next twenty-five years worshipping, and the wardrobe they photographed without her consent became the wardrobe that sold for $180,000 at Sotheby’s. The minimalism they called throwaway has become the golden child of the 2026 algorithm, and what keeps me awake at night is the idea that if she was still alive, we might not give a shit.

Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy's life proves that your style is a self-fulfilling prophecy, because the clothes she wore when she had the least freedom became the most copied aesthetic of the century. She wasn't writing the prophecy. Someone else was writing it for her, and she was wearing the evidence of it every single day.

What would you wear, if everyone hated you?

I think about this a lot, almost as much as I think about how Carolyn would hate this piece. She gave no interviews, made no statements. She constructed, in one of the most hostile conditions imaginable, an image to protect herself that we have perversely and inversely swallowed whole.

What’s funny to me now is that I used to be so annoyed by the saturation of content around her, the same 50 photos circulating with the same backwashed minimalistic quiet luxury effortless fashion old money-core-fattened captions. Now I look at her, and I wonder what music she listened to, if she liked Jerry Seinfeld, if she would tell me the shade of that blue nail polish she used to wear. I wonder if she knew that most people credit her for Calvin Klein signing Kate Moss, or that Ralph Lauren told his design team to think of her when they imagined future collections. I wonder if her style would have become more like Diana’s or Jackie’s, or if it would have evolved into something we’d never seen before.

What I do know is that she never posed for the paparazzi, wore the same jeans on repeat and wore the same shade of red lipstick her entire life.

The very least we could do is know who we're copying.

Style as Evidence

Your style is a self-fulfilling prophecy.

What you wear shapes how you behave, how the world responds, and who you eventually become. Therefore, style is not metaphorical. It’s behavioral.

To this day, when I hear the pitch of that piano key, the thump of the bass, I feel my head start to swim.

I can feel her singing as if she’s right in front of me; I can feel the power in the baseline that thumps with my heartbeat. I feel like she transferred all of her emotions into my chest; every memory so amplified I see it all right in front of me, as if I was watching a film of my life.

Amy Winehouse was a living paradox. She could come off sharp, even aggressive, and yet she was impossibly warm, charming, and bold. Her curls piled high on her head, her raspy laugh filling the room, she carried a mischievous charm that contrasted beautifully with a voice that sounded like it belonged to someone decades older. She seemed completely at home in herself. She felt familiar, like a friend who’d tease your hair before a party, then lean in to warm your lash curler with a struck match, smiling like it was nothing at all.

Its impossible to separate who she was with how she dressed because Amy Winehouse was a master of personal style. I don’t know if it was intentional; I don’t know if her best looks were created in five minutes or 5 hours, but however they ended up; they belonged entirely to her.

The Signature

Unlike most, Amy was fully herself from a very young age.

Long, dark hair that went past her shoulders, a cheeky grin that perfectly matched her tomboyish charm. She sang because she loved to sing, skipped class when she felt like it and was never running short on opinions.

Friends talked about how sure she was of her taste, how deeply she loved jazz, how seriously she took music, even when she didn’t take much else seriously. She dressed the way she liked, for the life she was already living. Everything she wore looked like she grabbed it as she ran out the door. I dont know if she ever felt the need to think twice.

As her life moved into larger rooms, her look became more defined. The hair went higher, the liner thicker, the dresses closer to the body with a neckline that went as low as the beehive went high. She didn’t dress to impress. She dressed the way people do when they’re comfortable in their own skin.

This is what the Signature looks like when it’s lived, not performed. Appearance as authorship. Style as a quiet extension of self-knowledge.

Amy knew who she was. And she wore it with ease.

The Seeker

After the global success of Back to Black, Amy’s life began to unravel. She was in a deeply volatile relationship with her on-again, off-again boyfriend. Drug use escalated within the relationship, and their dynamic became a primary emotional driver in her life. At the same time, her father decided to re-introduce himself into her life, with several documented incidents show he intentionally blurred the boundaries between parental care, management, and exploitation.

The tabloids followed her relentlessly. She was photographed leaving clubs, entering cars, crying, bleeding, laughing, collapsing. One of the most cited moments occurred in St. Lucia, where Amy had gone to recover, and her father arrived with a camera crew, turning a fragile period into content.

This is where her appearance begins to look inconsistent, not because she was searching for a new identity, but because maintaining consistency required energy she no longer had. Makeup smeared. Clothing fit poorly or slipped out of place. Her style began to change, but not in the way people like to describe it. She wasn’t trying to experiment, she was beginning to feel exhausted.

This is the Seeker. Not as reinvention, but as exposure.

Unlike Bourdain, whose Seeker phase expanded him into the world, Amy’s Seeker phase was an inward collapse. Her appearance started reflecting the effort it took just to show up. The uniform that so clearly defined her now demanded energy she was already spending elsewhere.

She was still choosing, still trying, but the certainty that once guided her style had been interrupted by a life that no longer felt like her own.

The Ghost

In the final years of her life, her appearance lost its cohesion. The elements people associated with her appeared haphazardly, tangled and matted. Her larger-than-life hair deflated, her makeup appeared watery, as if she was hanging on by a thread. It was impossible to mistake her for anyone else, but she was a shell of the woman she was.

Her life narrowed. Her health deteriorated. Attempts at recovery were repeatedly interrupted by demands to perform. She was moved from place to place, scheduled, put onstage even when she was visibly unwell. The most public example came in Belgrade in 2011, where she was pushed into performing despite clear incapacity and was met with boos from the crowd. The footage circulated immediately.

The images twist my stomach, watching her hold herself so desperately as if her footing in reality depended on it. She was ripped of her personality; devoid of the passion that summoned her talent, and propped up on stage for our enjoyment.

The Ghost is Disengaged and Withdrawn.
This alignment forms when someone no longer has the capacity to maintain themselves in public. Appearance becomes incidental because survival takes precedence over expression.

What disappeared wasn’t her taste or her talent. It was her sense of self.

The breakdown of upkeep, the collapse of form, the evidence was there, long before the end.

From the outside, it’s easy to read this as neglect, apathy, or collapse. But in reality, she was surrounded by people who needed her functioning more than they needed her well.

The Transformation

Her style wasn’t costume or rebellion. It was evidence. And when you read it through the Alignment Chart, the pattern becomes unmistakable: The woman she knew, the woman she tried to hold together, and the woman she collapsed into being.

Style does not hide the truth. It reveals it. Sometimes long before the person wearing it can say it out loud.

People tend to talk about Amy Winehouse in extremes.

As genius or cautionary tale. As talent or tragedy. But what’s easy to forget is how human she was in the ways that mattered most.

We love her because we envy the grace she had, the non-preformative way she went about her life. We all want a friend like her, we want to be the friend that’s like her. Amy showed up as she was, long before the world began pulling her apart.

She will never be defined by her lows, because no matter how lost she was, she still found a way to give to the world during her greatest time of need. When everyone turned their back on her, when we ridiculed her, patronized her, abandoned her, Amy gave a gift to this world that still numbs our own sadness to this day. Amy was never glamorous, Amy was real, and when we think of her, thats the feeling that remains.

What survives isn’t the spectacle. It’s the sincerity.
And for me, that’s enough.

Reading Kitchen Confidential felt like when your vision snaps.

All of the sudden, my perspective changed in an instant. Here I was, sitting in a studio that was barely big enough for my bed, with a book I thought I would find mildly interesting, at best.

I blinked and it was 2am, my eyes red, the pages blurry, my fingers feverishly flipping the pages like how a fiend looks for the loosey thats always right behind his ear. I wanted to stay up all night, I wanted learn to cook sauce from scratch. Back then, my entire cooking repertoire could be summarized by a walk down 6th Ave to Trader Joe’s, and my tried and true, the defrost button. I remember sheepishly looking down into my bowl of veggie fried rice and realizing that I was, all the sudden, quite embarrassed at my ‘abilities’ and, maybe even at my preferences? My standards? What if he came through the door right now and saw that I had pre-mined garlic in my fridge? I threw it away on the spot.

I didn’t know much about him then. I wasn’t following his shows. I barely understood why he was famous. But I do remember opening my half-dead laptop and typing into Google:
Anthony Bourdain, style.

Because whatever this energy was, sharp, human, unfiltered, I wanted to know what it looked like.

The Familiar

In the early years, Anthony Bourdain dressed the way every serious kitchen demanded: quickly and consistently. Chef’s coat, checkered pants, black clogs.

He once said that kitchens attract “misfits and pirates,” and as someone whose worked in kitchens and tending bar, that was certainly reflected in the way he wore his whites. Sleeves pushed up a little higher than necessary, a cheeky band tee peeking from the collar, the cigarette tucked behind his ear. His knives were very clearly the only possessions he treated with love: polished to a shine each night, carried the way most men would posture their expensive watches.

When Kitchen Confidential came out, he looked like a line cook who’d accidentally written a bestseller. Which, to be fair, was kind of true, though he had been elevated a little past the line by then. Press photos show him in the same beaten leather jacket, the same jeans, the same boots he had worn the night before. The way he looked was almost with and without ego; he made the ordinary look dangerous, and we loved him for it.

The Seeker

The Seeker appears when someone begins using their appearance to understand who they’re becoming, and thats exactly what happened to Bourdain the moment fame yanked him out of the kitchen and into the rest of the world.

In the No Reservations era, he didnt change overnight, but he was forced to look at himself in a new way. He had spent decades in a uniform, never needing to ask who he was beyond it. But the moment Kitchen Confidential made him visible, he had to reconcile two identities: the man he had been, and the man the world suddenly saw.

His wardrobe transformed from something he shared with a collective to something that belonged just to him. This is when his style settled into the look most people associate with him: dark denim, fitted shirts, leather jackets that had texture and mileage, combat boots perfect for Tokyo and back-alley kitchens. Producers for No Reservations and later Parts Unknown often offered wardrobe help, even full styling support, and he turned it down every time. It was the one part of his life he could control while everything else was accelerating.

Eventually, he entered fatherhood and a more stable home life. His wardrobe softened into navy sweaters, sneakers he wouldn’t have worn before, lighter fabrics. Small choices, signals of a mental shift.

Experimentation doesn’t always look eccentric. Sometimes it looks like someone holding steady.

The Ghost

What haunts me isn’t what he wore at the end, but how looking back its so obvious that he was fading in plain sight.

In the later years of Parts Unknown, Bourdain’s wardrobe narrowed to a few pieces, and the the leather jackets and fitted shirts lost the rock-and-roll charm and wit that defined his Seeker years. As his life became more demanding and emotionally unstable, he shed anything that required additional care. Accessories disappeared. Layers disappeared. Color disappeared. Crew reports describe him as quiet, flat, unusually withdrawn between takes. The visual evidence matches the clinical profile: diminishing affect, constricted expression, reduced self-care. The clothes weren’t style anymore. They were function at its most basic level.

The Ghost is Disengaged and Withdrawn.
This alignment forms when someone no longer uses appearance as to express. Clothing becomes the simplest version of itself because the person wearing it is conserving every resource they have. For Bourdain, this wasn’t a loss of taste. It was a loss of capacity. The shrinking wardrobe, the reduction of color, the reliance on sameness, these were clinical signals long before they became cultural tragedy.

The Transformation

His style wasn’t performance or persona, it was evidence. And when you read it through the Alignment Chart, the pattern becomes unmistakable: the man he was, the man he explored, and the man he struggled to remain.

What I’ve always admired is how little he relied on anything artificial. No entourage, no rehearsed charm, no pretense. He said what he said and wrote what he did, with no apology and no pandering. He followed his curiosity with a Cheshire cat grin until it led him somewhere worth sitting down. He spoke with the kind of honesty that makes you braver without making you harder.

He always ate the food offered to him, even when he disliked it, because he believed refusing a meal was refusing a person. He once spent hours helping a young line cook fix his knife grip because no one had ever shown the kid how to hold a blade without hurting himself. He kept postcards from strangers tucked into his travel bags. He could be sharp, impatient, and exacting, but he was never detached from the people around him. He cared about the underdog, the overlooked, the ignored. He cared about cooks, taxi drivers, the grandmothers with one good recipe, and anyone who was trying to give life a good, honest go.

It isn’t the fame or the shows or even the writing. It’s the humanity. The sense that he cared more about understanding the world than convincing it to understand him.

That’s the kind of style I aspire to, to look like the life I’ve lived.

Where to begin, with a man like David Bowie? The truth is, there is no other man like him.

Equal parts invention, instinct and brilliance; everyone has an image that instantly conjures when his name is spoken, even those who dont know Ziggy Stardust from Charlie Brown.

For me, David Bowie has enchanted me for as long as I can remember. He is someone so captivating, so dazzling, I was shocked my parents didn’t share my near-obsession when I discovered an old vinyl of his tucked away in a long-forgotten cabinet. As a child who tore through fantasy books the way most did with legos, with the same zest as the owners of the Barbie Dream Houses, I felt spellbound. I realize I am not unique, not even a little bit, in saying this; however, even if I never heard a word of his music, I think I might have still had his poster on my wall.

Phase 1: The Seeker

In the early 70s, Bowie didn’t dress to express stability. He dressed to push identity apart and see what else might exist. Ziggy Stardust came to life in 1972, metallic jumpsuits by Kansai Yamamoto, platform boots, kabuki makeup. A year later came Aladdin Sane, with the lightning bolt splitting his face and searing into our collective memory. By 1976, he discarded both for the Thin White Duke, a dramatic shift with slicked-back hair, sharp waistcoats, a cold silhouette that made his presence feel so precise, it almost made him even more larger-than-life.

He was a gender-bending shapeshifter, someone who never found comfort in repetition, toggling between extremes in search of discovering more and more about himself. His music echoed this range, traveling from loud and theatric to more soulful, even softer.

Bowie’s refusal to repeat a single look across albums is the very heartbeat of The Seeker, someone who is looking for themselves through endless reinvention. He didn’t ask “who am I?” He asked, “what happens if I become this?”

By the late 1970’s Bowie stepped into a mode of authorship, different than he had worn before. During his Berlin years, Bowie turned to a more stripped-down look: His wardrobe was defined by distinct tailoring, trench coats, and a cooler, seemingly more restrained image that stood in sharp contrast to the costumes that came before. The punch of Ziggy and the Duke gave way to something steadier. By 1983, during Let’s Dance, the powder-blue suit and open-neck shirts became his defining silhouette, the power of such proven by how instantly recognizable it is to this day. Across videos and press, his wardrobe stayed consistent and deliberate, built from clean lines, purposeful color choices, and sculptural hair.

Unlike the beautiful chaos of The Seeker, here we see the logic of The Signature: repetition becomes identity. His presence became legible without excess, proving that alignment is not about novelty, but about clarity.

Phase 3: The Unbothered

Presentation as ease.

In his later years, Bowie no longer dressed to experiment, his style shifted into a comfortable ease. To anyone else, the casual coats, baseball caps and simple cotton tees might signal a level of disengagement, but for Bowie, becoming The Unbothered archetype reflected an assurance so internalized it no longer needed visible proof.

In interviews, he appeared in sneakers and caps. The silence in his clothes reinforced the presence in his persona. Even in his final Blackstar appearances, monochrome tailoring revealed a man whose clarity was so complete that performance was unnecessary. The look was minimal, but the authority was absolute.

Bowie’s transformation wasnt linear. He began in costume, and fractured multiple times to test multiple identities. He embodied characters no one else, including himself, knew existed. His final phase was a release of all his previous identities, while at the same time, a culmination of them. He settled comfortably into himself, into David. He no longer needed to search for anything new, as his psychological journey had come to an understanding, he had completed what he needed to do in order to explore who he was. When inquiry stabilizes, it becomes authorship. When authorship is internalized, it becomes ease.

This is the work of alignment: not finding the right outfit, but finding the version of yourself who no longer needs to be styled into existence. Who we think we are, is who we design ourselves to be. Your style is a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Bowie proved that you can change as many times as you like, while always remaining yourself.

He never mistook his style for mere decoration; he treated it as a great experiment to be wielded in the public eye; his aesthetic hypostheses wild enough that even Tesla would gasp.

He didn’t just change his look, he proved how one can become. His movement from The Signature into The Unbothered is proof that our journeys in style alignment are made powerful through our own grasp and knowledge of who we are, why we dress the way we do. There is no place on the chart better or worse, only the one that feels most like you.

The next time you get dressed, I ask that you give yourself five minutes to ponder the possibilities: Who would emerge, if I stopped asking who I was? Who do I have the power to become?

Style as Evidence: Case studies in aesthetic evolution and psychological alignment, interpreted through the Style Alignment Chart.

Our style isn’t our identity. Our style is how we shape our identity.

Our appearance becomes behavior, and our behavior becomes self. Therefore, style is not metaphorical. It’s behavioral.

That’s the foundation of the Style Alignment Chart: a diagnostic framework made up of nine archetypes, each showing how your internal state is expressing itself outwardly—through posture, presence, and appearance.

This chart doesn’t measure taste or personality. It’s not about what you like, it’s about how you show up. The archetypes aren’t fixed types or moral categories. They’re reflections of how deliberate you are, and how connected you feel to yourself. Think of them as shifting states of engagements: You are not just one of these. You may shift based on environment, move up or down with mood or energy, or currently occupy one square as you reach for another.

Princess Diana’s style has captivated the world for over three decades. She remains the most photographed woman in modern history, as close to an eternal being as humanly possible. She captivates us not just because she was a royal, but because of her emotional journey. She made it visible, we saw her grow, we watched her change. Her greatest moments in style weren’t simply about clothing. She evolved into herself, yet she was fully herself in every phase.

She wasn’t meant to stand out. She was meant to belong. The precision wasn’t aesthetic, it was strategic, and she and Charles always looked just right together. Her wardrobe matched the scenery, was perfectly calibrated to present a united front.

Her body language followed suit, tilted head, clasped hands, the quiet posture of someone trying to stay within the lines. She looked immaculate. Unthreatening. Perfect. She was an emblem, not an individual.

Phase 2: The Seeker

Midway through her public life, the performance began to fracture. Diana started testing the edges of her role, sometimes subtly, sometimes brazenly. She began trading peter pan collars for sharp-cut skirt suits. Pastels gave way to dark sapphires and emeralds. This was the era of her now-iconic athleisure: cycling in spandex, leaving clubs in sweatshirts and pullovers, pairing riding boots with jeans. What looked like everyday clothing signaled something deeper, a deliberate visual departure.

By this point, she and Charles were functionally separated. Free from the tight grip of palace protocol, Diana began working with stylists outside royal approval. Her wardrobe became more personal, more unpredictable. She oscillated between statement gowns and off-duty casuals, revealing a style no longer tethered to a single directive. One moment, ultra-feminine glamour; the next, pragmatic realism.

In her final years, Diana’s style became unmistakable.

Monochrome tailoring, minimalist column gowns, and clean, assertive silhouettes replaced the ornamental codes of duty. The days of dressing for expectation were gone. Her wardrobe distilled into a personal vocabulary, feminine, focused, and effortlessly self-assured. She wore pink Converse to examine land mines. She wore Versace on errands. She had nothing to prove.

And then, The Revenge Dress.

On the night Prince Charles admitted to the world on live television that he had been unfaithful, Diana stepped out of a sleek black car, smiling broadly, making the most powerful nonverbal statement of her life. This dress, this off-the-shoulder, above the knee, wickedly form-fitting vision violated every rule of royal protocol. Black was reserved for mourning. Bare shoulders were forbidden. Hemlines were meant to fall below the knee. But Diana didn’t flinch. She didn’t explain. She simply arrived.

What I adore most about this, is that this wasnt a dress she bought for the…occasion. Diana had owned this dress for years, always pushing it to the back of her closet, never drumming up the courage to wear something so bold. This night, however, she made a statement without saying any words at all. She was the punctuation on an already broken sentence, and when the world saw her that night, they fell in love all over again.

Because in a single moment, we saw her for exactly who she was. Diana, The People’s Princess, was not a woman scorned. She was a woman defined by no one. She didn’t need anyone to complete her, she did that, all by herself.

She no longer dressed to adapt or disrupt, she dressed to inhabit.

What made Diana iconic wasn’t just her fashion. It was her clarity.

Peggy Guggenheim is one of the most significant figures in the history of modern art.

Her discerning eye built a canon of taste that was both cultivated and compulsive. She was not a woman of grace, but of appetite. She consumed whole, and spat out bones with no remorse. Her life was punctuated by despair, possession, and sudden loss, yet what she made from it was singular: a world powered not by lineage, but by longing.

She has always fascinated me; I picture her in seafoam green, drifting through the canals of Venice, her thick lashes behind those round surrealist glasses. She wore flowing Fortuny gowns, loud prints, and enormous earrings that clashed in ways only she could command.

She rejected the title of artist, but became the modern version of a patron. She was eccentric, essential, and often misunderstood. She was a museum of other people’s madness and devotion, a temple filled with borrowed visions in which, I believe, she saw glimmers of herself.

In this edition of Personas, we examine the myth of Peggy Guggenheim through Ethos, Pathos, and Logos—and discover how her style reveals the cost of seeing without being seen.

Section I: Ethos, The Mask of Character

Ethos /ˈē-ˌthäs/: From the Greek êthos, meaning character, custom, or moral nature.

If there was one word I had to choose to define Peggy Guggenheim, it would be bold. Everything about her life, the way she moved, collected, spoke, and dressed, was bold, often bordering on brazen. She had a lust for more: for knowledge, for intensity, for disruption. It oozed, like turpentine bleeding through oil.

From Paris to London, and eventually Venice, Guggenheim created spaces where painters, writers, and thinkers could collide. She dressed as deliberately as she collected: long Fortuny gowns, caftans in violent prints; each piece of jewelry was less an accessory than an assertion. Denied entry into the world of her birthright, she fashioned a new one entirely her own.

Her personality was equally commanding. She was demanding, often cutthroat, and rarely paused to consider how her words might land. As a patron, she provided critical support to artists who would go on to define their era, including Jackson Pollock; once referring to him as her “spiritual son.” But like many of her relationships, theirs was fraught. Some artists resented her influence, felt suffocated by her involvement, even as they depended on it. She had strong opinions and rarely held them back. Peggy didn’t just support the work, she shaped its context. She was never passive. That wasn’t in her nature.

And yet, what stays with me most is her self-description: “the poor Guggenheim.” On its surface, it was about money, she received a notably smaller inheritance than others in her family. But I don’t think she was speaking about finances. I think she meant that she felt poor in spirit. Her life, to me, reads as a long, relentless search for something missing; a hunger for a feeling she may not have recognized, even if she had ever found it.

Guggenheim did not consider herself an artist, but she took pride in her ability to recognize artistic genius early. She once vowed to “buy a picture a day” at the height of her collecting. Her acquisitions were impulsive, sometimes erratic, yet always strategic. She was neither the creator nor the muse, I suppose she was, in reality, the catalyst. The witness of a new age.

Section II: Pathos, The Wound of Emotion

Pathos /ˈpā-ˌthäs/ (noun) From the Greek páthos, meaning suffering, experience, or emotion, the emotional resonance of one’s feelings.

At just 13 years old, Peggy Guggenheim lost her father when he died aboard the Titanic in 1912. This loss left a massive scar upon her life and psyche, and continued to follow her throughout her life. Upon his passing, it was revealed that she received a much smaller inheritance than many of her relatives, even including her cousins and other members of distant family. In her memoirs, she later wrote about feeling excluded from the family’s inner circles, she had been cast out for the simple fact of being. Orphaned, every way but legally.

It makes sense, then, that she would develop a kind of wanderlust. She lived in multiple cities throughout her life, Paris, London, New York, Venice, often surrounding herself with avant-garde artists and intellectuals. Part of it was aesthetic, but part of it was emotional: a desire to find home, to belong. She longed to be part of something larger than herself, and her life’s work of cultivation answered that ache. The way she dressed was ornamental, eclectic, layered like a silk cocoon. Mismatched shoes, and kohl-rimmed eyes; flowing caftans in bold prints, heavy earrings that brushed her shoulders, turbans twisted high above her brow.

Though she thrived in her chosen cultural circles, her romantic life was far less forgiving. Guggenheim had numerous romantic and sexual relationships, including two marriages and affairs with several artists. These trysts were intense but short-lived, and she often spoke openly, candidly, about her difficulties with intimacy and emotional attachment. During World War II, she used her growing wealth and influence to help artists, including Max Ernst, whom she later married, escape internment and flee Nazi-occupied Europe. Being half-Jewish herself, and often made to feel like an outsider because of it, she knew what it meant to live at the margins, even among the elite.

Most tragically—and most devastatingly—her deepest wound was made public when her only daughter, Pegeen Vail Guggenheim, died by suicide in 1967, at the age of 41. It is a cruel symmetry: a woman who lived in a vacuum of emotional withholding, unintentionally or not, created the same environment for her children. It was known that their relationship was strained; While Peggy poured her energy and time into artists with no name recognition, she offered little support to her daughter, an artist in her own right. She publically spoke down about her daughters art, and minimized Pegeen’s mental and emotional struggles. Perhaps they mirrored something too familiar.

Maybe that’s why she couldn’t help. Maybe that’s why she didn’t. Maybe, in the end, it was easier to nurture the genius of strangers than to face the fracture in her own bloodline. Peggy Guggenheim could see the future in art, visions splashed on canvas, but in her daughter, and perhaps in herself, there was only a void.

Section III: Logos — The Mirror of Thought

Logos /ˈlō-ˌgäs/ (noun) From the Greek lógos, meaning word, reason, or discourse. The logical structure behind an idea.

It was not creation that made Peggy Guggenheim an artist, but her ability to cultivate. She collected art, not as a muse or a subject, but as someone who recognized its value before the world did. She catapulted the lives of many artists simply by including them in her collection and exhibitions, and she was unapologetically specific about what she liked.

She was drawn to surrealism, abstract expressionism, and other radical movements that defied conventional form. These choices reflected her interest in the unconscious, the irrational, the emotionally raw. She seemed to see bits and pieces of herself in the works she loved. She spoke of them with real passion, not with the prose of a theorist or historian, but as someone who felt deeply. The art she collcted moved herl; I believe she adored what she adored because, on some unspoken level, she thought it might recognized her back, almost like a friend.

The emotional resonance she found in the work of others must have been both a thrill and a kind of despair, to feel as though you could only see yourself reflected back in the works of others, in someone else’s vision. Despite creating one of the most significant private collections of the 20th century and opening it to the public, Guggenheim often expressed feelings of exclusion and dissatisfaction. Though she became a central figure in the history of modern art, she remained, by her own account, emotionally and socially isolated.

It’s painful, almost haunting for me, to know that the woman who quite literally reshaped the cultural world could feel so utterly alone. She took her family’s legacy, once built on mining and metallurgy, and turned it into something strange and luminous, something made of vision instead of ore. And yet, even in her most enduring work, she felt alone. I suppose I should say that she was alone, because if you are surrounded by people and still feel unseen, it might almost be kinder to be forgotten.

Closing Reflection

I think Peggy spent her life trying to define who she was, outside the standards she was born into; standards that were always too narrow, too indifferent, too inherited. She blurred the line between adoration and control. What she loved, she needed to possess. What she possessed, she often misunderstood. Her longing, to find herself, to matter, to be mirrored, became the foundation of everything she ever collected.

Peggy Guggenheim was buried alongside her beloved dogs, in the garden of her home in Venice. Her family lies elsewhere, scattered across mausoleums and cemeteries, her daughter laid to rest 700 miles away. Even in death, Peggy Guggenheim remained apart, destined only to reside in her own world. Hers was a hunger no inheritance could feed. A woman of appetite. A woman of absence.

There is more I could say. But perhaps this is where it ends.
For her, maybe, it was enough.

When I was young, I watched a movie about a man I’d never heard of before. His name was Bobby Fischer, and he was a prodigious chess player. He was young, maybe around my age, 13 or 14. He was not very nice, reveled in isolation, and was quite curt.

His eyes wavered between a soft focus and a deep stare. He loved chess in a strange way: it didn’t feel benevolent, it felt consuming, dominating. He reveled in it, screamed about it, was grotesquely obsessed with it. To play with Bobby was to incur a wrath others were forced to endure. I was completely fascinated by him, and though I can’t quite tell you why, I still am.

I feel as though if he were in the room with me, I could sit quietly and watch him play the game for hours. Me, only knowing the essentials of chess, and him being a grandmaster, I highly doubt my company would be encouraged. I don’t think he would even enjoy me there, in my silent marvel, but there is something about genius I find intoxicating. I don’t want to touch it, or feel its adoration, I am simply enraptured in its company.

In this edition of En Vogue et Veritas, I analyze the man that was Bobby Fischer: one of the most brilliant, deeply flawed humans of our time. Born a brilliant prodigy, he was a symbol of hope for Americans during the Cold War. He died a paranoid, vitriolic man, ideologically vile, imprisoned by his own mind. His gift for chess was a joy to behold; to see such striking beauty emanate from the human mind is almost divine. I am disturbed by the idea of two violently different capabilities alive in the same man— so take this as I intend it: a study, not a celebration.

Through ethos, pathos, and logos, I shall attempt to dissect my fascination. However, I am painfully aware that to study Bobby Fischer is to chase meaning through absence.

Section I: Ethos, The Style of Character

Ethos /ˈē-ˌthäs/: From the Greek êthos, meaning character, custom, or moral nature.

Bobby Fischer was raised by a single mother in Brooklyn, New York, whose work and frequent activism left her child alone more often than not. During these hours, six-year-old Fischer taught himself how to play chess—a new realm that burned out all others. Chess became his sole focus and desire, the only thing that made absolute sense to him. For this, he forfeited all social contact. His obsessive relationship with the game continued to foster his genius, alongside his emotionally volatile behavior. It seems that his behaviors were dealt with in a passive, nontraditional manner—never encouraged to find a balance between the extreme temperaments he experienced. Instead, he was lionized for his singular brilliance, which made his outbursts perhaps tolerable; he created a psychological environment in which chess was both his sanctuary and his territory of war. He sought to dominate. He sought perfection. He abhorred ‘cheap wins’ and gave a god-like worship to the idea of the ‘perfect game.’ His ethos was completely rooted in monomania and dominance—he trusted no one, relished in demeaning his opponents, and treated his ability with a god-like reverence. He didn’t seek connection; he sought control.

In this person, of all people, I would have expected this level of control to seep into his tailoring. Not through designer garments (as I cannot see him ever being so consumed in another’s creation), but at least a press of a collar. Wrong, I was! When he was young, he dressed like someone who didn’t care if he was on display. He wore garments that looked as though they’d just been rummaged from the bottom of the hamper. Fischer had no care for aesthetics—not even harboring anti-fashion so much as a complete lack of it. He dressed like a schoolboy who was a bit too serious for his age, and though he complained openly that his suits were ill-fitting, when offered a custom one, he refused. In the midst of his career, he had some tailoring and bespoke suits created, but they seemed to be more about his current state of mind than the clothes themselves. When he was young—and as he devolved into old age—he seemed to ebb back into a style that reflected both his disdain for the outside world and his singular focus on the game.

He seemed to spit in the face of all that was not created by himself, that did not fit in the chaotic box he built for his mind. There is no evidence whatsoever to suggest Bobby Fischer thought about fashion. However, it’s perhaps one of the things that makes the youngest-ever grandmaster so fascinating to me. The dichotomy of it all—I can’t quite explain. I’m sure he found it frivolous, beneath him to care about. However, if there was one thing he cared for, it was chess—and his relationship to it. I suppose chess never holds up a mirror to your body, only your mind.

Section II: Pathos, The Style of Emotion

Pathos /ˈpā-ˌthäs/ (noun) From the Greek páthos, meaning suffering, experience, or emotion, the emotional resonance of one’s feelings.

Some people, they wear their emotions like armor, layered and deliberate. Others, like Bobby, simply disappear into their obsessions until there is nothing left that separates them. They become a void, all-consuming.

Bobby Fischer’s gameplay could be characterized by a relentless pursuit for domination. He reveled in showing off his intelligence, often leading his opponent into a fate they never saw coming. He was known for bold, dramatic moves that would emotionally torment his opponents, shocking with unexpected plays that made the tension he invoked a third player in a two player game. In his youth he played in several simuls, where one player walks from board to board playing against dozens of opponents at once. This was a literal display of myth come to life, the image of a lone boy, genius in his precision, surrounded by a sea of challengers, the audience silently craning their necks to catch a glimpse. His genius became ritualized, his lightening fast moves feeling like slow motion to his opponents. While Fischer paced around the crowded room he because more and more isolated in his superiority, turning chess from a game into his own brand of psychological warfare.

Fischer rarely spoke of feelings. But they bled through the edges of his rigidity—through his paranoia, his solitude, and, later, his breakdowns. Beneath the steely control was a man deeply marked by abandonment: his father absent, his home unstable, his social life nearly nonexistent. He was mocked, envied, feared. He never felt like he belonged anywhere, except across from an opponent.

There was a tension in his presentation: Fischer wanted to be taken seriously, but he had no interest in conforming to charm or fashion. He lacked the vanity and finesse the looks needed to bring it full effect; It was a very obvious contrarian statement, he did not care for any rules that existed outside of his own realm. He refused conform, to give in to a society he thought he was better than. I suppose I can conclude that his clothing, all of the mannerisms inside the way he dressed revealed that strategy was what he cloaked himself in. It eclipsed all empathy for his fellow man, even (and sometimes especially), in the realm of chess; his quest to reach mastery left no room for grace.

Section III: Logos — The Style of Thought

Logos /ˈlō-ˌgäs/ (noun) From the Greek lógos, meaning word, reason, or discourse. The logical structure behind an idea.

When I think back to my first introduction to Fischer, I remember the near-desperate wish I had to be able to be like him, to see like him. I imagined a man with a mind that could see far beyond the limits of my own imagination, someone that could see so much with no effort at all, it would make my limited understanding of the world a chore to understand.

I remember being captivated by his obsessed nature, his fanatical study of chess openings, every move backed by impenetrable reason, sought for and declared from hours of labor. His opening move, 1.e4, which he proclaimed was “best by test,” didn't sound like a mere preference to me, it was a declaration of his rational superiority. He prepared for his opponents with such depth of knowledge that he could narrow down what kind of game they would play within the first few moves. He didn’t practice with other members of the community, as was standard, he isolated himself. He believed that truth and victory could only be found alone. His genius was his only companion, a ghost in the realm of the living. It haunted him, demanded from him, ate him alive, and he lived to feed it. His avoidance of expression, through fashion or really anything, was never just distaste. I don’t know if, for all of his brilliance, he was ever able to see beyond the board, if he could give meaning to human existence. I don’t believe he was happy. I don’t even think he relished so much in his intelligence, I think he just was a man obsessed with a game. He suffocated everyone around him with his obsessive compulsive need to dominate, he wilted any flower that grew an inch outside the lines. He wanted the world to be like chess: rule-bound, formulaic, definitive.

Now, I understand things differently. The image I created in my mind was a mirage, the man was far worse. There is nothing romantic about his style of thought, because the logos of Bobby Fischer is a closed loop. What he called truth was only his will, not reason. It was not a living ideology, but the idea of one. His intelligence was all consuming, he had no other outlet, nothing outside of chess. His intellect didn’t bring him joy, only chess did. If Einstein reimagined the universe and Mozart heard symphonies in silence, Bobby Fischer saw all of life play out in 64 black and white squares.

After winning the World Championship in 1972, Fischer spiraled, hiding from the public eye, refusing to defend his title, eventually living in a self-imposed exile. He was erratic, disheveled, nearly terrifying. As he aged he became more and more psychologically distraught, his worldview left no room for collaboration, contradiction or ambiguity. He threw temper tantrums on a world-wide scale, descended into Nazi belief systems, and claimed to be thankful for the September 11th terrorist attack on United States. Bobby Fischer, the youngest grandmaster in the world, descended into madness.

I laugh out loud at the idea of Bobby Fischer ever reading this piece (albeit he is dead, so I have no worries), but I am certain he would find me increasingly dull and utterly lacking in complexity. To be intrigued by another person, I think, he would find quite rudimentary. Alas, I am no prodigy, and have simply been gifted with an endless capacity for curiosity, so it goes.

I can still hear her shrieking laughter—sharp, unrelenting, seared into my mind like a curse. I can feel my hands curled into fists of horror, white as bleached bone, as Bellatrix Lestrange appeared onscreen. She was a manic wave of velvet and vile power, her wicked smile splitting her terrifyingly beautiful face in two. She was my childhood terror brought to life, lunging forward from the blue glow of the screen to steal the last breath from my lungs.

In my not-so-humble opinion, few actors possess a talent as exquisite—or as unnerving—as Helena Bonham Carter. Across decades and genres, she has absorbed entire audiences, pulling us into the strange, operatic orbit of her performances. She’s not easily watched: she is shocking, gorgeous, imbued with an all-consuming power that seems inhuman to possess.

Born into British aristocracy, she could have lived a very posh life of the fashionably restraint. Instead, she chose the theater, and all of its madness, mischief, and meaning. From her earliest period dramas to the gothic dreamscapes of Burton, she’s made her eccentricity an art form. Her fashion, like her filmography, defies simplification. She arranges textures according to mood, pairs eras together like lovers, and wears disarray as a crown. She is perfectly unique, impossibly chic and totally human. I tend to measure originality against her—how far someone’s willing to go to be undeniably, unrelentingly themselves.

In this edition of En Vogue et Veritas, through the classical lens of Ethos, Pathos, and Logos, we will dissect how the style of Helena Bonham Carter functions not as theatric display, but as a declaration of individuality.

She does not merely wear emotion—she embodies it, in crumpled velvet and half-buttoned whimsy, it’s as if the seams of her psyche have spilled out through her wardrobe. Her clothes are a visceral extension of her inner life: melancholic, mischievous, and at times, defiantly disheveled. She’s said she dresses to "have fun with pain"—and she does. There is no attempt to mask sadness or shrink for politeness.

But unlike most children, Dalí entered the world in shadow. Nine months before his birth, his elder brother—also named Salvador—had died of gastroenteritis at just 22 months old. Grief-stricken and unmoored, Dalí’s parents projected their sorrow onto their newborn son, naming him after the lost child and declaring him a reincarnation. From the moment he took his first breath, he was cast not as someone new, but as someone returned. He was loved not for who he was, but for who he might restore. Even his name was not his own.

From this early fracture, Dalí’s sense of self split: death and identity entwined, birthing a psyche both haunted and defiant. His sense of identity was not rooted in discovery but displacement. Who was he, if not his brother? Who could he become, if he was already spoken for?

Technically brilliant, emotionally volatile, and obsessed with time, memory, and the fear of vanishing, Dali’s fashion was never decoration—it was a way to prove that he, himself, was alive.

Later, Gala—his muse, his anchor, his undoing—tethered him to love and madness. Their bond was possessive, mythical, and posthumously haunting. Every embellishment was a shield against oblivion: velvet suits, opulent cloaks, gem-encrusted canes—each an expression of longing draped in theatrical drag. He wore beauty as armor, absurdity as a way to laugh through grief.

The Persistence of Memory (1931), his favorite and most famous work, crystallizes this sorrow. While often seen as a meditation on time, more deeply it’s about the surreal terror of time’s slow decay. The melting clocks, inspired by “camembert cheese melting in the sun,” transform softness into existential dread. Something rich and delicious turning to rot. He called it a “hand-painted dream photograph,” a portal into his inner world where the boundaries of logic melted under emotional heat. Time, to Dalí’s, was not rigid but mournful—bending, drooping, forever slipping away. Like his most theatrical ensembles, the painting embodies contradiction—stillness and distortion, beauty and decay.

Dalí felt everything in extremes. He feared death with a child’s horror. He loved Gala with cultish lust. He longed to be adored, to be remembered, but was disgusted when it came too easily. He teetered between fantasy and feeling, always elaborate, never accidental.

His suits were structured to resemble architectural detailing he adored, his obsession with symmetry was a visual ode to the Fibonacci sequence. Postwar, his fashion evolved to reflect his theory of nuclear mysticism—the idea that atoms, religion, and aesthetics were all expressions of divine order.

Dalí’s logos was paradox itself: chaos bound by structure, irrationality executed with intention.

His later works—like "Galatea of the Spheres" (1952)—attempted to reconcile atomic theory with spiritual transcendence, showing his belief that reason and magic were not separate, but spiraling partners. This desire to unify logic and the unknown shaped him mind and body: he was a man of obsessive detail. Each brooch, each print, each silhouette had purpose. He saw no distinction, no boundary, between art and science, intellect and intuition. Fashion, like painting, was a surface on which to explore his theory.

His clothes weren’t merely theatrical. They were equations, cosmologies, provocations. He didn’t dress to impress. He dressed to profess.

Robin Williams’s personal style is easy to overlook but extraordinary to examine— he accomplished the rare feat of dressing in a way that revealed, rather than concealed, who he was. I remember being at my friend’s in primary school and seeing him on MTV— I just wanted so badly to reach out and touch him. I always kind of imagined him in my mind as my friend; or I guess I should say, I thought that if he met me, he would like to be my friend. Maybe he would tell me silly jokes and make me giggle, or maybe he would join me as I collected bugs in my backyard. I was an interesting child, but I thought he might like that about me.

Robin Williams brought out the inner-child in everyone— what strikes me about him is that people never seemed to try and impress him, the way they did with so many other celebrities and movie stars. Whenever I saw him, it looked like people just wanted to be with him. Like he was their friend they hadn't seen in so long, and they just couldn't wait to be next to him again. He made everyone a kid again, even if just for a moment. He made grown men giggle.

He was deliberately and proudly soft, no need to be a ‘manly-man’ or assert dominance. He was content in the simple desire to bring other people happiness. He met others where they were, and his wardrobe was the tactile reflection of this. He wore sneakers on red carpets. He favored hoodies over high fashion. His shirts were often untucked. These weren’t even a fashion choice, I suppose, but more of a moral decision.He dressed as if to say: “I’m here with you.”

He famously accepted only $75,000 for voicing the Genie in Aladdin, despite the film earning over $500 million. When curiosity got the best of me, I found myself wondering, why on earth would that be true? What I discovered made me smile.

This was his north star: joy for others. He didn’t care about the fame, the kind of money a licensing deal would make. He just wasn’t in it for that. He saw Aladdin as a gift he could give, not a gig. The voice work was a love letter.

On a horrific day in 1995, Reeve suffered a tragic horseback riding accident that left him paralyzed from the neck down. The man who was seen as invincible was now barely able to breathe on his own.

It was Robin, his very best friend, who snuck into the hospital, disguised in scrubs and a surgical mask, pretending to be a wildly inappropriate Russian proctologist sent to perform an emergency exam.

This was Robin’s truest style—not just in cardigans or sneakers, but in the courage to be absurd in the face of despair. He wore amusement like a garment, deliberately, tenderly, because he understood that laughter—true, bodily, defiant laughter—could be a form of resuscitation. His style lived in the moments where he wrapped others in warmth, and shielded them from the cold reality can bring.

In 1998, Robin Williams starred in Patch Adams. A story about a pediatric doctor who believed that laughter was as vital to healing as medicine. He wore silly costumes and red clown noses, and knelt by his patients sides, making them giggle with silly voices and surprising them with balloon animals that somehow made the sterility of the hospital room feel a little bit warmer. Within the film, as was true in real life, he was dismissed over and over as unserious, inappropriate, even dangerous— the other doctors felt the white coat they earned was supposed to command authority, not laughter. Robin's portrayal made a radical point: a good doctor treats the illness—a great one treats the person.

He understood that childlike joy was not something we grow out of—but something we must grow back into. His costumes weren’t just for the screen; they were symbols of his belief that the human spirit craves wonder, and that even in sorrow, there is room for light.

In real life, he portrayed this in a similar fashion, with layers on layers. Hoodies over tees over flannels. Scarves, jackets, vests. Not polished, not styled—just like a regular dude. His style magnificently reflected his emotional state, the feeling the event brought him, the energy he wanted to extend. He is a masterclass in emotional resonance, as there isn’t an outfit I can find that doesn’t seem to tell a personal story.

The first time I watched Dead Poets Society, I had just moved to New York. I didn’t know anyone, anything, and everyone I loved felt far away. I sat in my little studio, rewinding and rewatching for an entire night, tears silently streaming down my face. I wanted to memorize every line, I wanted to be able to capture the drama of the striking emotions it summoned in me. I longed to be one of those boys running in the dark, reading poetry by candlelight. And perhaps, in spirit, I already was—just in a different time, in a different city, holding a different kind of lantern.

In Dead Poets Society, his portrayal of John Keating is wrapped in earth tones, elbow patches, soft cardigans, and gently crumpled button-downs. Nothing rigid. Nothing performative. A professor, yes—but not one interested in authority. His clothes whispered listen rather than obey. They felt more like philosophy than fashion.
