You’re standing in front of your closet, and it’s completely full.

You’re frustrated, overwhelmed, staring at things you bought, things you kept, things you meant to return, and some things you can’t even explain.

As you’re standing there, you have the familiar, sharp paralysis of someone who has too much, but somehow not enough, and you think: How is it possible that I have absolutely nothing to wear?

…but that’s not quite what you mean, is it?

You have millions of things, it’s just that none of them work. None of them are you, none of them feel right. You’ve bought everything you’re supposed to have and yet somehow you’ve ended up in the exact same place you were before, and it’s infuriating.

The fashion industry has declared your wardrobe is a problem, and they’ve been saying it for decades. Each year there seems to be a new magic wand: The capsule wardrobe, body type guides, your seasonal color analysis, investment dressing, the clean girl era, creating your Outfit Formula, on and on and on, each one with the same promise: Follow these rules, and you will never have this problem again. Follow these rules, and you will finally look like yourself. And so you do. But you don’t. And you have no idea why.

But I do.

You, my friend, do not have a style problem. You have a behavioral one.

You don’t know who you are, you know who you are supposed to be. And that gap creates a world of pain.

Every morning, whether you know it or not,

you are making a decision about your identity. The freakish thing is that there are only two ways to go: either you are in control, or something is controlling you. That ‘something else’ has several faces: The status-quo, your judgmental boss, what your friends are wearing, the version of yourself you were three years ago, what your parents would say. All of these voices in our head make us afraid to stand out, afraid to be embarrassed. We habitually make ourselves smaller every day, and then we wonder why deciding what to wear is exhausting.

When you search for answers, all you’re told is how to look like someone else. You’re given other people’s capsule wardrobes, other people’s outfit formulas, other people’s aesthetics, and you feel like a failure when it still doesn’t work.

It doesn’t work because it was never made for you. It was made for the idea of you. The category you represent. For your body type, your color palette, your Pinterest board. Nothing was made for the actual, specific, singular person standing in front of the mirror at 7am trying to figure out who they are today.

Your personal style is not your identity. It is the mechanism through which identity is formed. Appearance becomes behavior. Behavior becomes self. This loop has been running your entire life, whether you knew it or not. If you don’t understand what it’s currently building, then you are not in control of it. Someone else is writing your prophecy.

The Architect

Authored Style × Expressed Identity

Someone notices a specific piece, an earring, a pin, something small and deliberate, and the Architect smiles. The smile of someone who has been understood, like you discovered the password to a hidden world, you saw what others missed.

Every piece means something. Nothing is chosen at random, nothing is leftover from an earlier version of themselves, nothing was kept out of laziness. Their outfit is a private text written in a vocabulary entirely their own. Often believed to be high-maintenance, The Architect has no interest the status-quo. They dress exactly as they intend to regardless of where they’re going, or who they’re seeing. No two Architects share a language, and that is the point, the aesthetic is irrelevant. The authorship is everything.

The Architect does not dress for your approval. They dress the way most people only dream of living: entirely on their own terms.

The Ghost

If you look at photographs from a few years ago, there’s someone there who looks more like themselves than the person you see now. The Ghost is present. They are here. They are functioning. And yet something underneath the surface has hollowed, so gradually and so quietly that most days they don’t notice, and on the days they do, they put the feeling away before it becomes something they have to address.

Getting dressed is a task that gets completed, just like everything else. If someone asks if they’re okay, there’s a flash of something— irritation, sadness, or the perhaps the exhaustion of being seen when you’ve been working very hard to be invisible. They resent the question because of what answering it honestly would cost: energy they no longer have.

There is no judgment here. The Ghost is surviving something. And surviving, for now, is enough.

The Performer

If the Performer likes your outfit, they’ll ask you who made it rather than just giving you the compliment. If you’re their friend and you told them you were wearing one thing and show up in another, they’ll make sure you don’t forget…and probably more than once. There is a slightly controlling energy around group appearance — it’s not malicious, and you’re not even sure they’re aware they’re doing it, but it’s there all the same. It’s a seemingly natural expression of someone for whom the visual stakes are always, always high.

Everything the Performer wears has been researched. Pinned. Cross-referenced against a complex internal system of what is right, what is approved, what will land the way it is intended to land. They make it look effortless. They’re your friend who has overnighted $500 of clothes for an event because the alternative felt genuinely unmanageable. The Performer understands this completely, and would never say so out loud.

They keep score, compulsively, eternally measuring. The person they’re most secretly envious of is the friend who simply doesn’t care, who throws something on. Who never even seems to think about it. The Performer has never not thought about it. And underneath all of it, quiet and patient, is an identity that has been waiting a long time to be asked its opinion.

The Anchor

Habituated Style × Expressed Identity

The Anchor gets their favorite shoes resoled every year. They pay nearly what it would cost to just replace them, and they don’t think twice about it.

They’re genuinely surprised when people compliment their style. No false modesty, no humble-brag, they’re actually surprised. In their own mind, they basically wear the same thing every day. They think of their friends who are always changing, always experimenting as the stylish ones. And yet that exact person is often the one who stops to tell the Anchor how good they look, usually in a tone that contains something more than just a compliment.

The Anchor has something that cannot be purchased or assembled: a peaceful relationship with themselves. It takes no effort and costs nothing to maintain, giving them the confidence of someone who warms every room they walk into. The Anchor just is… and they have absolutely no idea how rare they really are.

The Shadow

Abdicated Style × Emergent Identity

To a stranger, the Shadow leaves no impression at all. They’re perfectly presentable, agreeable, they’re the living, breathing poster child for the status-quo. There is nothing about their presentation that would cause someone to to do a double-take, and beneath the surface, this is entirely intentional.

To close friends, they’re the one texting you at 8am to ask if their top is okay, and then again at 8:14 — always about a detail so minor you didn’t even notice it until they pointed it out. Their self-doubt doesn’t announce itself to the world. It surfaces only in safety, only with the people who have already been trusted, and even then it comes out as nervous laughter, constant second-guessing, and apologizing for things that don’t require an apology.

The Shadow has a vivid, specific, fully-formed interior world. They know exactly what they like. What they lack is permission, permission they’re waiting for from a source that has never actually withheld it, because the judgment they fear has not arrived and may never arrive. They talk themselves out of the thing they love before anyone has said a single word against it. The gap between what they are drawn to and what they actually wear is significant. They feel it every day.

The Heir

Abdicated Style × Expressed Identity

You know someone like this. The one who throws something on and arrives looking better than the people who hired a stylist. Who gets complimented on things they forgot they were wearing. Who makes effortlessness look less like a skill and more like a birthright.

You notice the piece they always wear, and ask about it. ‘This?” they say amusedly, “I’ve had this forever.’ What you don’t know is that they’ve given that answer a hundred times, and each time they’re just as surprised as the last. What puzzles them is that this is the thing people stop on — just an old ring, a worn-in jacket, a sweater they stole from their mom. It’s nothing special, per se, they just love it. They never thought anyone else would notice.

The Heir feels something close to guilt about how easily it comes — or if not guilt, a quiet bewilderment that the compliments keep arriving when they have done so little to earn them. They sometimes sense a subtle shift in how they’re treated, in how they’re spoken to, that makes them feel like they’re being studied or examined. That is the part they can’t explain. The room responds to something they cannot see in themselves.

The Seeker

If you know what the Seeker has been obsessed with lately, you will immediately understand why they arrived looking the way they did. When they read The Secret History they swapped out their contacts for a pince-nez, after they came back from Paris they stopped blow-drying their hair, and the month they watched The White Lotus marked the beginning of their linen phase. When they encounter something they love, a character, a painting, a stranger on the street, there is an immediate translation impulse: How do I make this a part of me?

People commonly mistake them for being indecisive or scatterbrained, but every version is real. Every era is genuine. The Seeker changes because they are intrigued, and what they’re intrigued by keeps expanding. The Seeker is not chasing anything, they are continuously arriving.

The Sleepwalker

Watch the Sleepwalker pass a window display, or notice someone’s outfit. For a fraction of a second, you’ll see something flash across their face, a nearly imperceptible longing. Recognition, maybe — of who they were, or who they could be, if they just had the energy to care like that again. In the blink of an eye, the moment ends, and they continue on like nothings happened.

The Sleepwalker used to care. They know they used to care. Getting dressed used to mean something, they remember it, even though it feels like a lifetime ago. Somewhere between then and now, it all became routine. They’re burnt out in the specific, under-acknowledged way that creeps up and quietly removes things from your life until you look up one day and realize you cannot remember the last time you felt like yourself.

They feel embarrassed, and that makes it even harder to change. The gap between who they were and who they are seems impossible to bridge, and picking out an outfit is just one more impossible task. To everyone else, they look fine. That, as it turns out, is the loneliest part.

The Proxy

Habituated Style × Emergent Identity

The Proxy is your friend who always looks incredible, whose apartment looks like a Pinterest board, who seems to have figured out some code you haven’t — and who, if you asked them what they actually wanted — would go quiet for just a second too long before answering.

Every piece they own has been vetted, cross-referenced against the people they admire, confirmed by enough outside sources that wearing it feels safe. In a room full of people trying to figure out the right answer, the Proxy is the gold standard. They’re the ones who look like they just belong.

What no one sees is that this ‘taste’, this ‘style’, isn’t actually theirs. They’ve been borrowing it for so long it’s started to feel like their own, and they have an irrational fear that someone is going to ‘figure them out’. They’ve scanned the guest list, checked the tags for dress code, and when someone shows up wearing the exact same thing they picked out, they’re not even mad. Frankly, it’s a relief.

Sometimes they reach for something different, but they always pull back. They talk themselves out of it, and tell themselves its not practical, not really an option.

The Proxy always looks like they know exactly what they’re doing. The question is, are they actually ever doing what they want?

The Performer can become the Architect. The Ghost can become the Seeker. The Sleepwalker can wake up. Your archetype today is a function of where you are right now, in this moment, but you cannot move from a position you cannot see.

Most people are not failing at style, they’re succeeding at something else: minimizing who they are in a world that has a very specific opinion about who you should be. The way you get dressed is a behavioral record. It is not what you intend, it is what you do. And it’s this seemingly small, unconscious daily act that is the most accurate prediction of who you are becoming.

Your style is a self-fulfilling prophecy. You dress for the person you think you are now, and thats exactly who you turn out to be. What a profound waste it would be, to spend your one precious life trying to look like someone else.

Standing in front of your wardrobe, you glare into the abyss.

Your fingernails dig into your hips as your index fingers tap an impatient little dance, and for the millionth time you ask yourself: What the fuuuuck am I going to wear?

You scan the tops of hangers and feel the annoyance rising, that specific, familiar irritation of someone who knows they have done this before and cannot believe they are doing it again. Your foot taps. You exhale. You start rifling.

I have to have something.

You do have something. You have everything. And somehow, standing in front of all of it, you have never felt more certain that what you have, in fact, is nothing.

It’s unbelievable; someone who shops as much as you do, who thinks about this as much as you do, should not end up here, at 7am, exhausted before the day has started. This spectacle of decisions is the performance of your lifetime, and you are but a puppet on it’s strings.

That evil little voice, whispering in your ear, telling you that everything looks wrong, it doesn't belong to you. It never did. It belongs to the “audience”, the one you've been performing for every single morning without ever once stopping to ask who they are, where they came from, or why you keep letting them in.

In 1791, Jeremy Bentham designed a prison where the inmates could never tell when they were being watched. They eventually stopped needing guards because the inmates started monitoring themselves so closely, it rang redundant.

Your wardrobe is that prison. And the only person watching you is yourself.

Before you could scroll, there was a watchtower.

Before anyone taught you what an aesthetic was, you already knew how to perform. You learned it at the dinner table. In the school hallway. At your first job where you understood, without anyone saying it directly, what kind of person got taken seriously, and what kind didn’t.

You may have moved, have changed, you may have dreamed of a different way, but one thing has always remained: You have always lived in the tower.*

We are suffering from an epidemic of sameness.

Not because people lack taste. Not because everyone secretly wants to look identical (actually, I could make an argument that people love nothing more than looking like clones, but for the sake of this article I’ll push that thought away). But because the watchtower is so loud, and the performance so exhausting, that most people have quietly made the choice to bow out, to make themselves digestible, to make the easier play. Give the world what it wants before anyone has a chance to say no, before anyone has a chance to look at you twice.

Everyone is dressed, but almost no one is actually present.

People love to blame Instagram and Tiktok, and while theres enough blame to go around, your online life isnt solely responsible for this performance. The version of you that walks into a meeting, the version of you that exists in photographs, and the version of you that stands in front of your wardrobe at 7am, they are all, now, the same continuous audience.

You didn’t escape the prison.
You just forgot you were in it.

The audience in your head isn’t one person. It never was.

It’s a cast of mutilated events, opinions and oppressions all morphed together. They’ve assembled over decades, cast their own parts, and every morning when you stand in front of that wardrobe, every single one of them shows up.

Allow me to introduce!

The Critic!
Every person who ever evaluated you before you were old enough to argue back. A teacher. A parent. A boss in your first “real” job. They said something once about how you presented yourself, something they’ve completely forgotten. But you haven’t.

The Room!
What will they think? Not who specifically, just they. A nameless, faceless consensus you’ve been trying to satisfy since adolescence. The outfit that can’t be too much or too little. The one that says I tried without saying I tried too hard. The Room has never once told you what it actually wants. That’s the point. Uncertainty is what keeps you performing, and look how good you’re doing.

The Wound!
The sharp stab of an insult, the scab you pick just to see if the scar is still there. You tell yourself they don’t matter, youre the one in charge of your life, who cares what they think, anyway. Yet every time you approach it, each time you pick it enough to bleed, you bandage it up with something safer. The thing you stopped wearing…the color you put back…the version of yourself you decided was too much…away she goes, in the back of the closet, where she belongs.

The Person You Were Supposed To Be By Now!
She’s the most exhausting one. She has it together. She dresses like someone who has arrived. She chastises you for wanting to be comfortable, ridicules you each time you skip the gym, mocks you each time you see someone wearing something you long for. She has been five years ahead of you your entire life, and she reminds you every day that she always will be.

None of these people are in the room with you, but each one of them is running your wardrobe. And if they’re the ones in charge, that means you have no idea what you actually look like.

Not what you look like when you’re performing for the Critic, or softening yourself for the Room, or reaching for the person you haven’t become yet. What you look like when the audience is gone and the only question left is: what do I actually want to wear?

Most people have never answered that question.

Because in the panopticon, you are never alone long enough to ask it.

Here’s the part you’re not going to like: You cannot get out by not caring.

I know that’s the fantasy. The capsule wardrobe. The uniform. The deliberate, principled refusal to participate. I don’t think about clothes. I have more important things to focus on. The people who say this believe they have escaped the performance. They have not. They have simply outsourced their identity to someone else, and called it freedom.

The oversized hoodie worn as a statement of “not caring” is still a statement.

The person who wears the same thing every day so they doesn’t have to “think about” it is still being judged by every person, in every room they walk into.

There is no neutral. There is no exit.
There is no version of having a body in public that is not, in some way, a performance.

The people who believe otherwise aren’t free.

They’re just performing a different story about themselves, the story of a person who is somehow above all of this.

And that story?
That story is the most carefully maintained performance of all.

So if there’s no exit, there’s only one option.

You become the architect.

Not the inmate who has stopped “noticing” the tower. Not the person abandoning freedom and lazily calling it power. The architect: The one who looks at the structure directly, sees exactly who built it and why, and decides: this is not my design. Because here’s the thing about a prison you built yourself: You have the blueprint.

Who did I think I was?

That question has been running in the background of every outfit decision you have ever made. It sounds like self-doubt, but i promise, it isn’t. It’s the tower talking, the algorithm, the wound, the room, the person you haven’t become yet, all of them asking you to make yourself smaller, safer, easier, flatter, less.

The question was never who did I think I was.
The question is: who are you dressing for?

And for the first time… that answer gets to be yours.

You treat your style like it belongs to a character; someone that only lives in your imagination.

You fill your closet with items you don’t wear, and wonder who stares back at you through the mirror.

Understand: Buying something is not the plunge, wearing it is.

The water doesnt get any warmer the longer you wait.

Be misunderstood

Stop over-explaining, stop over-curating. No logo, core or trend is more ‘you’ than you. This idea that we can only define ourselves through constant consumption, constant checking, following, purchasing, is meaningless. You are not an item. You’re outsourcing your identity for mass appeal.

Don’t round out the edges of your personality to be more palatable for others. If they cut their tongue on your plate of offerings, let them bleed. You have no gods! You have no masters! Sit comfortably in the waters of yourself, imagine new and different ways to appear, to behave, to become. The endless opportunities every single day that your free will allows.

Be ugly

CRAVE SOMETHING MORE THAN THE BEAUTY OTHERS SEEK. Being ugly is the greatest gift you can give yourself. Purposely try to look ugly. THIS is when your style is really going to start expanding because youre going to see something that no one else has. Try something new. Mix things together youre convinced would never go. Wear something you swear would only look good on someone else. Mess it up, tear it down, try again.

Bury the idea that other people should like how you look deep into the frozen ground, hold a funeral for all of the times youve been so cruel to yourself you depended on the validation from others. Other people are nothing. You, my magnificent friend, are everything.

trip and fall

Fail, fail often. Trip while youre sprinting ,and fall so hard your palms bleed. Stare directly in the sun and let the spotted vision blind you to the obstacles in your path. Lick your wounds with neosporin, smack on your dressings with pride.

Abandon the foolish notion that perfection is desirable, and end your ruminations about others. Try something new, something different, not for the sake of pride or glory but for the understanding that each time you fail, your brain rewards you with elasticity. Become proud of your own evolution, bear witness to the magnificent creations you summon into reality.

Long live the individual, with choices strange and chic! Long live the beauty in imperfection, the utmost glory of expressing our human soul!

You are not a misfit toy. You are haute couture, one of a kind. And there is no higher purpose than to bring your imagination to life.

It’s nothing more than a not-so-stylish rebrand of (dry heaves) minimalism.

Before you commit to this doomed personal rebrand, take a good look at yourself and ask, which one of these do you want to be?

A beige, bland, if-you-were-a-spice-you’d-be-flour repeat?

OR

Someone that thinks for themselves?

Do you want to look like this silicon valley, instagram clone, epidemic of sameness?

Or when people look at you, do you want them to see you for the person you are?

If you want good style, then you already understand that your taste is currently sitting as un-lived potential.

If you want to communicate who you are through purchasing a new wardrobe, then you need to stop letting other people, WHO LOOK LIKE OTHER PEOPLE, tell you what to wear.

You need to ask yourself the following:

• What do I like? Stop thinking about clothes. What do you like?

• What books do you like to read? What characters do you identify with? What are your favorite colors, what are your favorite memories? Who are the people that you like to be with? What inspires you?

• If you ever find yourself thinking ‘I like this, but I dont know if [fill in the blank mystery person that you don’t actually know] does… STOP. START OVER.

Once you have identified what you, yourself, enjoy, like, are inspired by, only then should you begin curating your wardrobe. Purchasing anything before this point is a waste of time and money, and the only thing you’re going to prove is that you have a really big fetish for copy and paste.

You are never going to have good style by looking like someone else.

There is no magic formula. There is not right amount of beige or perfect amount of cable knit that replaces the work of finding out who you are.

And spoiler alert? It’s going to change.
Hopefully, a lot.
Hopefully, all the time.

The people who look the best are not the people that take style advice. They’re the ones who create their own style. Who relentlessly, joyously, passionatly, find themselves again and again and again. The people that we look up to years later, when what they did then becomes fashionable now.

Be ugly. Be weird.

Scrape the palatable conglomerate of the masses off your tongue and reach for a new taste. Your style is a self-fulfilling prophecy, and every day, YOU write the script.

Most people believe confidence comes from what they wear.
In reality, authority is granted only after confidence is perceived.

In the first three seconds, the brain makes its decision using only three inputs: shape, color, and detail. These elements determine who is perceived as dominant, readable, or invisible, no matter who you are; no matter what room you find yourself in.

I once heard this described perfectly: “Dress like you mean it.” What she was naming wasn’t intention. It was alignment.

These are the aesthetic mechanisms everyone is judging you against…whether you realize it or not.

HOW SILHOUETTE SHAPES YOUR PRESENCE

Before your face is registered, your body is classified.

Silhouette is processed in milliseconds as a power cue. The brain does not see “clothing” first, it sees outline. Size, edge, and spatial intention are assessed immediately: How much space the body claims, whether its edges are sharp or softened, if the form appears deliberate or defensive. These signals subconsciously sort a person into categories long before conscious thought occurs.

Grace Jones

Jones uses angular, high-volume silhouettes that deliberately expand and heighten her frame. The sharpness and scale of her outline instantly makes her appear decisive, in-control. Standing, speaking or sitting, her presence is read as high-power because her silhouette conveys a person of authority.

Princess Diana

Diana demonstrated precise control over her silhouette, especially as her context shifted. In public, casual settings, she softened her outline, oversized sweatshirts, relaxed proportions, signaling physical ease and approachability while retaining strength. In formal contexts, she returned to crisp, structured silhouettes that anchored authority. The shift was not emotional. It was strategic. Her silhouette changed how she was read before she was heard.

Mr. Rogers

Rogers maintained a comforting, rounded silhouette: soft cardigans, relaxed shoulders, no sharpened angles or volume. His outline minimized dominance cues and consistently communicated safety, steadiness, and emotional reliability. Over time, this silhouette became shorthand: His body itself signaled trust.

HOW COLOR SIGNALS CONFIDENCE

Color is processed as emotional information before it is processed as aesthetics.

The brain uses saturation, contrast, and palette consistency to predict emotional intensity and confidence. Highly saturated colors raise arousal and signal assertiveness. Muted or low-contrast palettes signal calm or restraint. Consistent palettes signal stability. You feel the color before you interpret it.

Color conditions what we think about others, long before we recognize it as a decoration.

Grace Jones

Jones uses high-contrast palettes: Deep blacks, metallics, electric reds, that heighten visual arousal and psychological distance. The intensity of her color choices reinforces authority by limiting access. She is seen as commanding, predominant, important. Her palette signals that engagement happens on her terms.

Princess Diana

Diana frequently used soft blues, pastels, and low-saturation hues. These colors reduced visual threat while maintaining composure, as they made her incredibly approachable without diminishing her presence. The result was that she felt warm, caring, kind, someone we automatically feel affection for and see as honest.

Mr. Rogers

Rogers relied on a warm, highly consistent palette of reds and neutrals. Worn the same way, in the same context, red stopped functioning as a signal that demanded attention. It became familiar, anchoring, and quietly reassuring. The repetition was crucial. Predictable color became a regulatory signal: Emotionally stabilizing, familiar, and trustworthy.

HOW DETAIL CHANGES HOW YOU’RE SEEN

Detail does not add interest. It changes interpretation.

The brain interprets simplicity as control and complexity as stimulation.

Millions of us wake up and battle an endless feed of beige basics and the never-ending ‘it-girl’ rebrands. From watching my friends go from shopping in-store, to online, to accumulating more screenshots than tax returns, social media, aka The Algo, is where 90% of their style inspiration is sourced. And after being exposed to the same Pantone Color of the Year for the thousandth time, the thumbs who searched for miles finally exhausted themselves, and laid down their weary willpower on the same checkout button tapped by friends, peers and complete strangers. The oversaturation of sameness, the longing to belong, all accumulates to one final sigh: I dont know who I am, but I am sure of what everyone else is wearing.

Finding your style can feel impossible when you didn’t realize you’ve been trained to preform it. The person in the mirror isnt your ally , she’s a meaner Edna Mode constantly giving you a critique you didnt ask for. If you’ve ever felt like you’re method acting your way through your own life, congratulations! This is the first of a very painful exercise we in the business call: Becoming Self-Aware™.

Inside your closet, there is a whole cast of characters who you have to speak to, reckon with, confess to, before you can solve this mystery, why you can own everything in the world and still look nothing like yourself. I know you don’t want to, I certainly didn’t want to meet them either, but it is my job to ensure you don’t end up looking like the Stepford Husbands and Wives of the Infinite Feed, so I’m going to give you a litttttlee push…….

The 9 People You’ll Meet in Your Closet

1. The Repeat Offender

They’re instantly recognizable: they have the same sweater in triplicate (”it’s a totally different color!”) five pairs of the same jeans, and a near-religious devotion to “quiet luxury.” Their closet looks less like self-expression and more like a storage facility for Repressed Dressers Anonymous; they know every flattering angle of their favorite black blazer because it’s been auditioning for “main character” since 2019.

In psychology, this is called pattern reinforcement: a feeling of safety and comfort achieved through sameness. Their guilty pleasures are small acts of rebellion, an impulsively ordered latte that isn’t the usual, an unexpected silver ring that looks risqué next to their french manicure.

Repetition trains the brain to equate predictability with identity. And when that happens, the body stops anticipating novelty; it settles into maintenance mode. The Repeat Offender swears they’ve “found their uniform,” but what they’ve actually found is a way to make every day look like yesterday.

2. The Eternal Editor

The Eternal Editor lives inside a perpetual soft launch. They’ll spend 20 minutes adjusting a cuff only to decide the entire outfit just isn’t quite right. Their wardrobe is Martha Stewart-level immaculate, organized by sleeve-length, color-coded, and haunted by tags from clothes they’ve been “meaning to wear once I figure out how to style it.”

Psychologically, this is the illusion of control: editing as self-soothing. Chasing the moving target of perfectionism makes them feel like they’re making progress, and they’re quite terrified of wearing anything that hasn’t been pre-vetted by their own research (which means searching Instagram, Pinterest, Tiktok and Google, in that order. Unless you have a different order that works better that they don’t know about, in which case a new spiral will begin). They can tell you what looks right, but ask them what made them feel most alive, and you’ll be met with a wide-eyed, deer-in-the-headlights stare.

The tragedy of the Eternal Editor is that they confuse rehearsal for readiness. By the time they finally feel certain, the moment has already passed, and they’re editing it in hindsight. In the end, their style isn’t a record of taste; it’s a museum of drafts.

3. The Someday Stylist

They’re always almost ready. The Someday Stylist owns the wardrobe of a fascinating, well-traveled person who has rarely, if ever, actually left the house. Their closet is full of brand-new pieces, statement shoes that have come close to the pavement, and a perfume “too special” for weekdays. Their shopping habits read like a fortune cookie: When I’m more confident, When I go to Italy, When I finally lose ten pounds. You’ll hear them say things like, “I just need the right occasion,” as if the occasion were a deity that must be summoned. Every purchase is a premonition of the person they’re dreaming of becoming, every hanger is holding its breath, hoping today will be the day.

In psychology, this is known as deferred self-acceptance: identity on layaway. The Someday Stylist believes transformation must be preceded by proof, that they must first become deserving of beauty before they can inhabit it. But becoming isn’t something you prepare for; it’s something you perform.

Their tragedy is that they’ve mistaken readiness for worthiness. The future self they keep waiting for can’t arrive until she’s finally invited to dinner.

4. The Social Chameleon

Everyone’s favorite plus-one, but never the headliner. The Social Chameleon is fluent in ‘understanding the assignment’. They can sense the hierarchy and slide right into its dress code, because their favorite party trick is being ‘on brand’. Their style shifts with the venue, the guest list, their aesthetics ranging wildly from event to event, an entire SSENSE cart purchased because “we’re going to an Italian wedding!” They dress like a personality test that can’t decide on its results.

Psychologically, this is the performance of belonging. They confuse recognition with connection and harmony with identity. They’re sartorial method actors, auditioning for approval in every aesthetic genre available.When you compliment them, they’ll say, “I just threw this on,” because admitting how much effort it took would make them rethink it all over again.

Their tragedy is subtle: they’re praised for taste, but never remembered for signature. They’ve mastered the art of dressing to be accepted, and in doing so, they’ve become accepted everywhere except within themselves.

5. The Constant Fixer

They CANNOT STOP adjusting. The Constant Fixer treats their reflection like a collaborator who’s always slightly disappointed, exchanging the cold Miranda Priestley onceover with the look of an apathetic mother who has simply tried everything she can. Tugging at hems, retying belts; they live in a perpetual state of fine-tuning. Every photo is zoomed in, analyzed, rejected, then re-taken. They edit their own appearance the way sound engineers remove background noise: methodically, obsessivley, and endlessly.

In psychology, this is hyper-vigilance turned inward: self-regulation masquerading as aesthetic taste. The Constant Fixer isn’t trying to look perfect; they’re trying to avoid the discomfort of being seen imperfectly. Their guilty pleasure is when they get home and slipping off the shoes they don’t even like, untangle the bobby pins from their perfect pony and sink into a a room with all the lights turned off.

The tragedy is that they keep mistaking composure for control, not realizing that composure only happens when you surrender to it. The Constant Fixer believes they’re curating a flawless image, but all they’re really perfecting is exhaustion.

6. The Closet Historian

The Closet Historian doesn’t purge; they preserve. To them, clothes are memory objects: the dress from the summer they went to Paris, the blazer from that very first job, the jeans that fit a life they stopped living 15 years ago. Letting go isn’t hard because of the fabric, it’s the story stitched inside. Donation piles linger for months because each donation feels like a line erased from their diary.

Psychologically, this is known as attachment through preservation. They open drawers like photo albums, fingers tracing seams as if touching a timeline. The Historian clings to the past self for fear that without it, they’d have to redefine what beauty means now.

The tragedy is gentle: their loyalty is touching, but it’s misplaced.. The proof they’re searching for isn’t in the fabric, it’s in the fact that they still remember how it felt to wear it.

7. The Fashion Fugitive

They live in a near-constant state of aesthetic witness protection. The Fashion Fugitive moves through aesthetics like New York City apartments, new walls, same ghosts. Their style is a revolving door of eras and inspirations. They declare, “That’s not really me anymore,” every six months, as if selfhood were a seasonal trend. They don’t edit their closet, they abandon it and start over. Each purge feels cleansing until the next identity crisis sets in. Their guilty pleasure is the online checkout page, that hit of absolute transcendence right after the purchase confirms. For a few seconds, they’re not who they’ve been; they’re someone new, someone solved.

Psychologically, this is flight disguised as freedom. Reinvention feels like progress because movement looks so much like momentum. They’ve lost the thread of who they are, so they sew new identities from whatever fabric feels close enough. The Fashion Fugitive mistakes motion for evolution, mistaking the adrenaline of change for actual becoming. Each aesthetic promises a sense of coherence, however temporary.

Their tragedy is that they’re endlessly brave but never still. The search for “new me” becomes a self-erasing loop, a cycle of transformations that never quite take.The self they’re chasing won’t appear through another overhaul, it’s waiting for them under the weight of all their hangers, wondering when they’ll exhaust themselves from trying to find it.

8. The Perfect Neutral

They’ve mastered the art of invisibility. The Perfect Neutral believes in the power of restraint. They call it minimalism, but it’s really emotional diplomacy: a wardrobe designed to offend no one and reveal nothing. Loud colors are “distracting.” Statement pieces feel “try-hard.” Every outfit is a peace treaty with perception: sophisticated enough to impress, quiet enough to disappear.

In psychology, this is the avoidance of exposure, the art of appearing effortless so no one thinks to look too closely. The Perfect Neutral isn’t cold; they’re careful. They’ve learned that visibility invites interpretation, and interpretation feels like risk. They tell themselves polish is power, but it’s really protection, the aesthetic equivalent of holding one’s breath.

Their guilty pleasure is secretly admiring the bold ones, the friend in sequins, the stranger in scarlet, wondering how it might feel to walk into a room already being looked at. They’ll leave one button undone at home, then fastening it again before going out.

The tragedy is that they’ve mistaken composure for confidence. They think their stillness protects them, but it only isolates them. And silence, however chic, eventually starves the self it was designed to protect.

9. The Emotional Sweatsuit

The Emotional Sweatsuit lives in ritualized coziness. Their closet is a landscape of surrender: matching sets in oatmeal, “stone,” and “fog.” They own nicer clothes, of course, a pressed blazer for the rare presentation, a pair of heels they once swore they’d “get used to.” But they hang like museum artifacts, proof of an ambition that’s gone into early retirement.

They scroll through style videos and double-tap ambition: sharp tailoring, structured coats, the promise of a version of themselves who might stand taller. They tell themselves those clothes are for “later,” when life is less chaotic, but “later” seems so far away, especially when comfort is so close at hand.

In psychology, this is sensory self-soothing mistaken for self-expression. The Emotional Sweatsuit isn’t lazy, they’re overextended, overstimulated, and desperately in need of a digital detox.

The tragedy is that they’ve built a comfort so complete, it’s become a cage. The sweatshirt was meant to soften the day, not absorb it. And nothing, not even the softest fabric, can replace the feeling of nervous anticipation of trying something new for the first time.

So, how do you feel? Recognize anyone?

Don’t panic, we all have a few hesitations living rent-free in our proverbial closets, but the good news (!!!) is that you’re your very own landlord, and you can evict anyone you want. :)

If after reading this, you’ve identified with one (or 3) of these personas and are starting to think that this this means you have ‘bad taste’, then pop the champagne, because having bad taste is the only pre-requisite necessary for good taste, as you have to know what you dont like to be certain of what you do.

Be free from the insidious thought that there is a right or a wrong,

and adorn yourself in whatever causes you delight! Rage against the algorithm that feeds on the sad desire to belong by making you look the same as everyone else. Adorn yourself in whatever palette, texture and chaos your spirit desires. Be lavish. Be peculiar. Be strange, unique, daunting and daring. Let your taste be a glorious betrayal of all expectations.

So go ahead, get it wrong! Risk being seen before you feel ready. Every outfit teaches your mind what you’re capable of. The prophecy only works in one direction: forward.

The Style Alignment Chart is a two-axis framework:

• Vertical axis: Psychological grounding (from Self-Assured to Withdrawn)

Each archetype is positioned where these two forces intersect: intention and identity, presentation and perception.

What Withdrawn Means in This System

Withdrawn is not laziness. It is distance.

• Performative presence: visibility used to secure control, not self-expression. The core aim is to shield vulnerability through external mastery, clothing is the mask.

“I dress without awareness”

Distinguishing Traits:

• Mechanical dressing: clothes worn by rote, without thought or renewal

• Absence of emotional connection: no shame, no pride, just function

• Predictable repetition: same rotation for years without reflection. The coore aim is to minimize the psychic demand by erasing engagement with style, making oneself smaller in order to detract attention

✦ The Ghost

“I dress to disappear”

Distinguishing Traits:

• Emotional and physical disengagement: clothing signals absence, not presence

• Signs of collapse: mismatched, neglected, or visibly detached from vitality

• Dissociative undertones: appearance feels like a shell, not a reflection. There is no core aim Style is no longer a medium, only something that must be completed. This is often a signal of emotional breakdown, or severe disengagement.

In Closing

The Withdrawn Row is not apathy. It is estrangement.

Here, clothing no longer reconciles inner and outer life. It hides, it repeats, or it dissolves until identity feels suspended from view. Those who live in this row are not unreachable, but their appearance has ceased to act as bridge. It has become a barrier, a veil, or a ghost of what once was. This is the end of the chart’s descent. Where self-expression fades, and the question becomes not how you look, but whether you appear at all.

Go out, be brave, be bold, and don't be afraid of being ugly or silly or strange!

The world needs to to experiment and play, to try new things and find new pieces you love. Never forget that personal style is experimentation, a method of finding out more of who we are. You have the magnificent, unique ability to express your inner world in a way that no one else ever could.

• Constant mutability: visual shifts are common and deliberate, but rarely stable

Distinguishing Traits:

• Habit-driven style: their wardrobe repeats a known rotation with little deviation, changing their usuals makes them very umcomfrotable, they dont feel like ‘themselves’.

• Stability over novelty: clothes are chosen for comfort and recognition (as in: I have worn this before, so I will wear this again, not recognition as in attention-drawing), not expression

• No urgent self-questioning: their identity feels “good enough.”

✦ The Muted

“I dress by default.”

Distinguishing Traits:

• Absence of insistence: clothing feels incidental, chosen beccause it’s available and easy to wear

• Quiet ambivalence: they care in theory, but lack the energy or conviction to translate it outward. They are not lazy, but are somewhat distant from themselves.

• Low visual authorship: their presence is softened by detachment, not by rejection or collapse. They are not cowering, they are withdrawn.

In Closing

Those who occupy this row do not reject style, nor do they master it (yet!). They live in the inbetween, where clothing is trial, habit, or afterthought. The Neutral Row is the space of suspension: a holding pattern between the clarity of self-assurance and the distance of withdrawal.

The way they move, the way they talk; the way they exist so freely it makes their style seem effortless, inevitable.

You’ll notice what they’re wearing, not because it’s loud, but because of the way it seems to personify them. No matter the attire, they feel free, unconstructed. They don’t posture or waver, they just exist in an entirely self-coherent way.

This is who lives at the top of the Style Alignment Chart: the self-assured, emotionally aligned.

Each time we put on an outfit, each time we step into our personal style, we reflect our interior emotions, outward.

These archetypes, The Signature, The Grounded, and The Unbothered, holds a distinct relationship to style. One symbolic, one habitual, one ambient. What unites these three is not how they look, but how they relate to their appearance: they relate with clarity, coherence, and emotional stability.

They hold no longing to please, or guilt about their choices. They are the people who seem to be ‘allowed’ to wear whatever they want, even going against a societal norm. They’re not punished for it, though, because their break from conformity doesn’t make anyone else feel challenged.

The Grounded does not over-think their style, however their choices remain congruent, stable, and unconcerned with trends. Think: the person who’s worn the same jeans, sweater, and shoes for ten years—and somehow, it never looks wrong.

The Unbothered may appear careless, however their perceived lack of effort is supported by a deep-seated presence that makes them hard to ignore. Think: the person who never dresses up, yet always commands the room just by walking into it.

Distinguishing Traits:

• Symbolic repetition: certain items appear again and again, not out of habit, but because they’re something they identify with (favorite color, motif, etc)

• Visual consistency across settings: even if bold or eccentric, their style rarely drifts; it belongs to a personal system

• Style affirms identity, not approval: every choice points inward, not outward; they dress to reinforce who they are, not to be validated

✦ The Grounded

“I dress with consistency.”

Distinguishing Traits:

• Unchanged visual habits across environments: they find what works and rarely reconsider; not out of resistance, but because no friction exists

• No aesthetic self-questioning: they don’t wonder how they look, because they don’t wonder who they are

• Stability of presence without curation: their stability of self is a habit, not a practice, and their style quietly reflects it

✦ The Unbothered

“I dress with indifference.”

Distinguishing Traits:

• Effortless to the point of absence: their clothes may seem incidental, but their presence never is. Another way to say, they may look careless, but theyr’re never insecure

• Completely detached from mainstream style: trends don’t tempt them, and commentary never sticks

• Charisma that overrides dress: their authority isn’t in what they wear, but in how little it seems to matter

In Closing

Those who occupy this row don’t ask to be noticed, they simply are. Their level of self-assurance flows through all of their choices, making them impossible to mimic. Their style is all their own; deviod of trends, pretenstion, or the need for social approval.

Your personal style is not your identity. Your personal style is the mechanism through which identity is formed.

Ever since this thought came into my head, it’s never left. It’s one of the single most compelling ideas in my life.

We are not who we claim to be or who we want to be.
We are a visible projection of how we feel.

Each time we enter into the world, through posture, grooming, fabric, silhouette, we are initiating a loop. I call this the Feedback Loop of Identity.

The Feedback Loop of Identity (discussed here), does not begin or end with getting dressed. It continues through the reactions we receive, and the adjustments we make in response.

Our appearance becomes behavior, and our behavior becomes self. Therefore, style is not metaphorical. It’s behavioral.

What I have come to realize, through near-obsessive writing and ruminations, is that this loop is not just reflective. It is predictive.

When you change how you appear, you change how you’re treated. But more importantly, you change how you feel about yourself. That shift in self-perception alters your posture, your tone, your decisions, your expectations. It changes how you carry yourself, how you respond to others, and what you unconsciously allow or reject. These small behavioral shifts then trigger a new set of social cues, some affirming, some challenging, but always reinforcing. And over time, the feedback stabilizes.

The signals you send become the signals you believe.

And what begins as appearance becomes behavior, until it crystallizes as identity.

Therefore, personal style is not just expression. It is a self-fulfilling prophecy.

The Prophecy Loop

The Prophecy Loop is a refinement of the Feedback Loop of Identity. It introduces intentionality as the initiating factor and assumes repetition as the mechanism of change.

1. Belief → The internal narrative you hold about who you are or want to be

2. Aesthetic Expression → The choices you make about how to appear

3. Social Response → How others interpret and respond to your presence

4. Identity Reinforcement → How those reactions shape your next set of beliefs

5. Repetition or Recalibration → Whether you continue the pattern, or shift it

This may feel daunting, but understand: If style is a loop, then it can be rewired. If style is a prophecy, then it can be authored.

In other words, you don’t need to wait for the right moment or the right time to dress the way you want. Personal style is not the result of inner clarity, because you don’t need to understand yourself fully in order to express yourself deliberately.

It is through dressing deliberately that we are able to clarify who we are.

We begin to see ourselves in a new way, because when you dress with attention, everything changes. Your posture is altered, your personal grooming routines expand, you tend to yourself with more attention to detail, with care. All of these actions are behavioral modifications, and when your behavior changes, so do the responses you receive from others. Over time, these social responses and cues will continue, and you will begin to adjust your internal model of who you are.

What begins as a choice becomes a condition. What begins as rehearsal becomes habit.

And like all habits, especially visual, social, and symbolic ones, it becomes a form of identity architecture.

A word of caution: if you use this concept to force a new version of yourself into your psyche, it will fail.

The potential of this idea doesn’t lie within achieving aesthetic perfection, or strategic self-curation. In order to achieve the glory of becoming your true self, you must be willing to have bad taste. You must commit to the relentless, sometimes embarrassing, often chaotic exploration of discovering who you are, through experimentation. This is an experiment, meant to be blown up and made into a total mess. There is nothing glorious about the padded white room of perfection. This is also not a singular destination. You will find yourself, again and again, over the course of your life, dozens of times.

If this feels unnerving, I encourage you to think of my personal idol David Bowie, a man who proved that you can change as often as you like, while always remaining yourself.

It is through change that we allow our prophecies to come to life.

You must remember to be precise, not performative.

• Precision asks: does this appearance align with who I want to become?

• Performance asks: does this appearance convince someone else of my worth?

The former is stabilizing. The latter is exhausting.

Your personal style, your prophecy is not that you will impress others. It’s that you will create the conditions for your own evolution. You will be a spectacular, singular marvel, true to yourself and all your divine individualism. Don’t chase applause or acclaim. It will find you all on its own.

If, right now, your current identity feels misaligned, if your appearance feels outdated or performative, do not go out and buy something new.

You don’t need reinvention. What you need is an interruption.

You need to work with what you have, and learn to see your wardrobe in a different way. You need to interrupt your train of thought, and see the pieces in front of you in a new way. Become more playful in your expression, purposely try to mix and match things you might have previously found absurd.

There will certainly be a time when you want to enhance your wardrobe with new finds, and that’s natural. What I discourage is the idea that you can go out and buy a new self. You will not find your personal style in someone else’s closet. You will not find it on a mannequin, or through buying the same outfit as someone else. You need to learn how to look at things differently. There already are, im sure, items in your closet you identify with. Bring them to life in a new way. Don’t pair them with the same things you’ve worn a million different times, but look for a million different ways.

Interrupting the loop means dressing, even once, in a way that contradicts your usual story. It means wearing something that aligns with your future self, not your familiar one. It means allowing the discomfort of being perceived differently, and observing what that discomfort reveals.

The loop doesn’t shift with a single outfit, but it can be pierced.

And once pierced, it can be redirected, repeated, reinforced.

Finally, I’ll say this: Style is not the result of knowing who you are. Style is the tool that allows you to become who you’re ready to be.

Be free from the insidious thought that there is a right or a wrong. There is no one way to live, and certianly no one way to express yourself. Personal style is unique to you and only you; do not give in to this new worlds demand to flatten who you are to be more digestable. You will not belong by vanishing and being a little social media clone, a prisoner of the algorithm. Refuse obedience, seek delight! Don’t take yourself too seriously, fashion and style are a playground of infinite imagination, and you have every right to seek out delight.

Each time you get dressed, you’re making a small declaration about your identity. And with enough repetition, that declaration becomes a reality.

Style is a self-fulfilling prophecy, and you, my friend, are the oracle.

Personal style is much more than your aesthetic.

It’s the way you signal how you feel about yourself to others, and the way that you subconsciously teach others how to treat you. It’s the way we signal belonging, self-regard, rebellion, and belief before we say a single word. Style is not just a reflection of our identity, it’s a daily rehearsal of what we believe we deserve. The idea that we might unintentionally put our inner lives on display, through a hemline or a hoodie, fascinates me.

Style is a form of subconscious composition, and whether we admit it or not, we’re always speaking. We often believe we are merely throwing something on, but this is incorrect. What we are doing is following an internal feedback loop of identity.

Previously, we spoke about the Internal Feedback Loop of Style:

Style creates a feedback loop: what we wear is seen, interpreted, and then internalized, which shapes how we see ourselves. Over time, our presentation rewires our perception of ourselves due to the responses, or lack thereof, from others. In this way, our appearance directly influences our behavior. Our behavior then shapes our identity.

What I needed was a way to make the loop visible: I wanted understand how emotion becomes outfit, how outfit becomes narrative, and how that narrative loops back into identity. A visual representation to understand how we look based on how we feel. I realized that the act of getting dressed isn’t the final frame, it’s often the beginning scene. How do we know what part of the identity loop were operating in if we can’t see how we identify in the first place?

Finally, it came to me.

The Style Alignment Chart: Nine archetypes that mirror your current position in the feedback loop between feeling, appearance, and identity.

How does it work?

The Style Alignment chart is void of any aesthetic preference. This isn’t a personality test, but a reflective tool. It helps you notice how your internal state is expressing itself outwardly. The archetypes are fluid positions within the identity loop, not fixed states.

Think of them as shifting states of engagements: You are not just one of these. You may shift based on environment (home vs. work, comfortable vs uncomfortable), move up or down with mood or energy, or occupy one square most often, but aspire to reside in another.

Axis One: Emotional Self-Connection (Vertical)

• Self-Assured → You dress with clarity, presence, and ease.

• Neutral → You dress out of routine, function, or social compliance.

• Withdrawn → You are emotionally disengaged from your appearance.

Axis Two: Styling Intention (Horizontal)

• Deliberate → You make clear, conscious styling decisions.

• Unconscious → You rely on familiar choices without deep thought.

• Disengaged → You avoid or resist participation in personal appearance.

To find out where you reside, consider the following:

1. Is this outfit expressing who I am, or who I think I need to be?

2. What part of myself is most present in this look? What part is missing?

3. How does my outfit make me feel about myself?

4. What am I hoping others will notice about me? What do I want them to overlook?

The Nine Archetypes of Personal Style

1. The Signature

Deliberate + Self-Assured

The Signature dresser has a distinct personal style shaped by a confident sense of self. They are driven by their desire to express themselves with focused intention, they have a distinct identity they are aligned with completely. This person knows who they are and is keen to express it; they are often seen as fearless, and are the authors of their own life.

Examples: Iris Apfel, Michèle Lamy, Diana Vreeland, André Leon Talley

2. The Grounded

Unconscious + Self-Assured

The Grounded dresser has a distinct style that is consistently reflected with minimal deviations. They are known for their ‘type’ or ‘aesthetic’, and pull it off with ease. Their appearance reflects a strong internal sense of stability; this person feels worthy of attention and care without needing to perform or prove it. Their outfit doesn’t carry a message, as they don’t use style to anchor their sense of self.

Examples: Jane Goodall, Bill Cunningham, Fran Lebowitz

3. The Unbothered

Disengaged + Self-Assured

Often misunderstood as a lazy or careless dresser, this archetype reflects a unique phenomenon: calm, self-assurance without effort in presentation. This person is quietly confident, with a strong internal monologue; their social charisma or intellect gives them grounding. The Unbothered is often underestimated—until they speak. Afterward, everything they’re wearing seems intentional in retrospect. (Understand that this is only perception.)

Examples: Albert Einstein, Steve Jobs, Joaquin Phoenix, Julia Roberts

4. The Seeker

Deliberate + Neutral

The Seeker is someone who is in a phase of self-discovery and experimentation. They actively work to display their internal belief systems and personal narratives through fashion and appearance. This person is not indecisive, they are highly mutable and want to express themselves in a more complex way than they currently are. Their goal is self-discovery, not impressing others.

Examples: David Bowie, Dennis Rodman, Grimes, Helena Bonham Carter

5. The Familiar

Unconscious + Neutral

The Familiar dresses by instinct and routine. Their style is consistent, comforting, and largely unexamined; not out of low self-worth, but because it offers a reliable sense of identity. Their visual choices reflect emotional stability and repetition rather than expression. They don’t have low self-esteem, however, their stylistic journey is paused, they live in a known visual identity for the sake of ease, not expression.

Examples: Julia Child, Fred Rogers, Bob Ross

6. The Muted

Disengaged + Neutral

The Muted may care about appearance in theory, but lack the emotional or energetic bandwidth to act on it. They likely believe their personal style doesn’t matter; that it won’t make any real difference in their life. This kind of dresser is aware of their lack of effort and engagement, and often feels a quiet ambivalence toward themselves. They aren’t actively hiding, but they aren’t choosing to be seen. Their presentation reflects detachment, not disdain.

Examples: Larry David, Daniel Radcliffe, Greta Thunberg

7. The Masked

Deliberate + Withdrawn

The Masked dresser uses their presentation as their shield. These individuals adapt their presentation acutely to others’ expectations, often to gain control over perception. They swing from style to style, replicate outfits like copy and paste, and rarely, if ever, engage in actual stylistic experimentation. They are highly curated and stylized, but not in their own reflection. This person would think about how others would perceived them when putting on clothing, not how they themselves feel in the clothing. Their opinion of what they like is based off of whatever is seen as most fashionable at the moment.

Examples: Kim Kardashian, Ivanka Trump, Tom Cruise, Emily Ratajkowski, Jared Leto

8. The Veiled

Unconscious + Withdrawn

The veiled dresser is emotionally disconnected from their personal style. Dressing feels mechanical, a part of their routine likened to brushing ones teeth. This person’s predictability is deeply ingrained. They may wear the same rotation of clothes for years without re-evaluation, and may feel nothing towards their wardrobe at all: no shame, no pride, just existence. There is no joy in dressing, in expressing. This person isn’t necessarily resisting evolution, they simply haven’t realized it’s available. The veiled is defined by their lack of update.

Examples: Stephen King, Bernie Sanders, Warren Buffett

9. The Ghost

Disengaged + Withdrawn

The Ghost dresser is emotionally and physically disengaged, signaling a near-collapse of self. The Ghost suffers from depersonalization, a dissociative response common in burnout, depression, or prolonged stress, where one feels emotionally and physically disconnected from the self. It’s as if they, themselves, are absent from their own appearance. They are present, but not visible.

Examples: In their final years, Amy Winehouse, Anthony Bourdain, Truman Capote. These once vibrant dressers felt so detached from their previous selves, like a shadow, almost unrecognizable.

In Closing

I believe we are each uniquely our own, capable of creating and expressing whatever we desire. Sometimes, at least for me, the hardest part has been understanding how and why we are perceived the way we are, and delving deeper into this has brought me great happiness and purpose.

What we wear is not neutral, it has incredible consequence, every day. It’s more than a measure of your aesthetic, your budget or your taste: the clothing you put on your body is the way we broadcast our inner monologue, out. It’s the way we teach other people to respond to us, how to treat us, through cues, mirroring, and reinforcement. Our clothing creates a feedback loop. The feedback loop is constant, beginning again every day when you are deciding what to wear. It’s not just important for a first impression, but in every moment of being seen.

Neuroscientific research shows that humans form judgments about trustworthiness, competence, and likability in under two seconds, based on visual input alone. Before speech, before gesture, we are perceived.

What fascinates me most of all is how these micro-judgements dont just effect how others treat us, but they subconsciously inform how we will behave next, how we will behave accordingly with the responses we have elicited. Each time we are witnessed, our identity has a change to shift, to morph. Tomorrow, I could look unrecognizable than I do today in a matter of seconds.

The great transformations we see in others don’t come from the outside, they come from within, and are reflected out for us to perceive differently.

In this way, style forms a feedback loop. Worn, witnessed, reinforced.
With attention, it becomes recursive. Without it, it becomes fixed. The choices you make, what to wear, how to wear it, create the conditions for who you believe yourself to be.

Internal Belief → Visual Expression → Social Response → Identity Reinforcement → Evolution (or Stagnation)

I. Internal Belief

Your subconscious will always speak first. The trick part is that since it’s our subconscious, the messaging is usually hidden from plain sight, nestled into the choices we make each day on autopilot.

What you believe about yourself, your worth, your presence, your permission to be seen, will always be expressed in the silent details:

• The care or neglect in garment condition, your mental state & value of self

• The deliberateness of composition, the time it took you to put yourself together

• The subtle codes of grooming, the details that highlight or subdue your features

These are not superficial decisions. They are behavioral cues governed by self-concept.

In psychology, this is known as enclothed cognition: the phenomenon in which clothing impacts not only how you are perceived, but how you think, feel, and perform. It literally changes your brain to wear something different; like you’re a new character preforming a new role. The mind alters its performance based on cues associated with the choices you make: if you spend the time to groom your hair, moisturize, polish your nails, you likely carry yourself with better posture than someone who has neglected these routines. One begets the other, and so it goes.

Your internal narrative, both the conscious and subconscious, isn’t just how we speak about ourselves. It’s woven into the fabric of our wardrobes. Dressing, like any function done every day, turns into a ritual your brain maps out.

And as with all rituals, repetition and intention matters are paramount.

II. Visual Expression

Style is only neutral in a vacuum. Everything you wear matters. Whatever you make important will be translated into an invisible thread of confidence or lack that illuminates your presence. Everything signals, outward.

My favorite example is the white t-shirt. An item every person has, usually thought of as a blank slate. Allow me to propose that it is much more, it’s a litmus test.

Worn with precision and paired intentionally, a white tee conveys confidence and presence. Worn carelessly, it can signal exhaustion, carelessness, or self-neglect. The shirt hasn’t changed. The mindset behind it has. The same piece worn by someone with a different mindset will make the shirt appear visibly different. You will assume, interpret, believe something different about each person.

• Tucked in, cuffed sleeves, gold jewelry → minimalist, elegant

• Distressed, oversized, with lace skirt → romantic contradiction

• Untucked, with cargo pants and heavy soles → utilitarian

• Raw-edged, cropped, sculptural earrings → avant-garde

In this same vain, our bodies will always resist a narrative that the mind cant sustain.

This is why some looks don’t “land.” It’s not a matter of fit or trend. It’s a misalignment between what’s worn and what’s believed. Your body betrays the costume when the costume is premature. The difference is not in the shirt. It’s in the intention.

III. Social Response

People adjust to the emotional tone you set. Then, subconsciously or otherwise, you will adjust to their response of you.

Humans mirror what we observe, in posture, tone of voice, the way we gesture while speaking, and in our treatment of others. This is known as the mirror neuron system, the mechanism in our brains that intuitively reflects perceived emotional states. This is why people walking next to each other usually fall into step, why people usually cross their legs all in the same way (usually right over left), and why doing small things are harder, such as eating lunch at a time when no one else is. It feels awkward.

In the context of style, how you appear is a kind of behavior priming that demonstrates to others the proper way to treat you, based on their perception of you, and the actions you have taken. If your presence says “I know who I am,” people treat you accordingly. If it doesn’t, you may be overlooked, or assumed to be less intelligent, brave, tr

ustworthy, the list goes on and on.

A highly groomed appearance, even in simple clothes, implies inner order. A composed presence suggests emotional containment. This becomes legible in posture, gesture, detail.

• A wrinkled shirt with intention → relaxed, non-performative confidence

• A wrinkled shirt with disheveled cues → defeat, disengagement

IV. Identity Reinforcement

What’s mirrored back becomes internalized. Each time you’re witnessed, a new perception is formed, not just externally, but internally.

This is the often-overlooked half of the loop: the way others’ respond to you influences how you see yourself.

In other words, the social response to your appearance is not merely external; it becomes part of your self-perception. Each interaction offers subtle data, which the psyche stores and begins to treat as truth.

If your presentation elicits admiration, you may begin to embody the qualities that were projected onto you, confidence, presence, command.

If it is met with indifference or dismissal, you may unconsciously narrow your expression, becoming visibly withdrawn, thereby (usually accidentally!) reducing the very traits that invite recognition.

This is the psychological loop in motion: Style begets reaction. Reaction begets belief. Belief begets repetition.

• When your appearance aligns with self-respect, and that respect is mirrored, the behavior is reinforced.

• When your choices result in disinterest, discomfort, or ambiguity, you may unconsciously retreat—or, if unexamined, repeat the pattern until it hardens into identity.

Because of this, your wardrobe becomes a memory bank of different identity scripts. A living archive of who you’ve let yourself be, and who you could become.

If oyu change your outfit, you will change the treatment you receive. If the treatment you accept changes, then so will your thoughts. What you think, you will become. What we change, changes us. Around and around it goes.

V. Evolution (or Stagnation)

To shift your self-concept, to change how you are perceived, you must consciously interrupt the loop. While identity is fluid, you can change anytime you wish, the feedback loop has only two outcomes:

Evolution: The intentional refinement of personal style as a reflection of inner expansion, whether driven by clarity, aspiration, or a reclaimed sense of worth.

Stagnation: The persistence of outdated style cues, whether from nostalgia, self-protection, or diminished self-worth, that quietly signal resistance to growth.

To be very clear, evolution in this context does not mean reinvention or huge transformation. THe only thing necessarily for an evolution of thought is attention, specifically in the moments where we are in autopilot. When we are in this state, we're doing things out of learned habits, created by comfort, which will not allow for moments of change. When we stop ourselves in the loop, we have the power to view each of our choices as one that affirms or erodes our sense of self.

In essence, interruption begins by making the invisible, visible.

Before finalizing your appearance, consider the following:

• What am I affirming about myself by presenting this way?

• If I saw someone else in this exact look, what would I assume they were like?

• Am I conveying a positive message about myself?

• Am I proud of how I appear? Why, or why not?

• What have I internalized that has led me to the choices I’ve made with my grooming and attention to details? Do I deserve to feel this way?

• Is the message I’m sending one I’m willing to internalize?

To approach style with this level of scrutiny is to turn rehearsals, routine, into something grand. It will teach you how to preform your presence, self-regard, and authorship over your life.

When precision replaces passivity, the loop rewires. Precision can only be accomplished through practice, and practice is the gift of human invention.

I’ll leave you with this: are you dressing for the person you are, or the one you accidentally became?

To be mortal is such a cage.

We have such limited time on this earth, and yet most people are desperately trying to make as little an impact as possible. Too soft, too polite, too addicted to approval to ever cast (or have) a true opinion, or to use wardrobe an extension of self. So many people, absolutely mute.

Marchesa Luisa Castai (1881-1957), was the inverse. She was an Italian heiress, muse, and mythmaker who made it her life’s mission to become unforgettable. She used her vast fortune to construct a persona so otherworldly, so visually arresting, that it eclipsed her identity entirely. Her eyes were rimmed in kohl blacker than mourning, her gowns dripped with feathers and fur. She roamed the city with cheetahs leashed at her side, hosted séances in her gothic homes and decorated her hair with taxidermy birds, perched ever-so-strangely. People stared. People whispered. People watched even when they wanted to look away.

She was painted by Boldini, photographed by Man Ray, and dressed by Poiret. Understand: power can operate in the shadows, but the purpose of the shadow is to conceal, to obscure. Like Oz, the Wizard pulled every lever, but lived behind a curtain—unseen, uncredited, untouchable.

Power and influence are very tricky beasts: if all you want is control, darkness will do.

But if you want glory, your face remembered, your presence felt, the feeling that influence brings, you must try harder. You must step into the light. You have to be seen.

To court attention at all costs is not to beg for the gaze. It is to command it.

In order to do this, you must be what everyone else is not.

The Mechanics of Being Unforgettable

✦ 1. Visual Whiplash: The Art of Contrast

This isn’t necessarily about being loud. It’s about not being definable. Contrast confuses, and confusion forces attention.

Casati’s presence was built on the tension between delicacy and danger. Her skin was powdered to ghostly white; her gowns clung to her like smoke. She created a kind of psychic whiplash—daring the eye to reconcile softness with savagery.

In your world:

Don’t match—fracture. A sharply tailored jacket over sheer lace. Perfect hair with chipped nails, oversized trousers with a shockingly tight corset. Anything to create the tension of duality. This is not about shock value: if you cannot carry yourself with confidence, you will look like a child begging for attention. When done correctly, you will feel empowered, righteous, even sexy.

✦ 2. Use Signatures Like Spells

Abandon trends, forsake the chase! Create something that is specific to you from something you have always adored.

Casati knew that repetition breeds myth. Her face, always ringed in heavy kohl, became a signature shadow. Her fingers slithered with rings made of snakes and spiders. By anchoring herself in repeating visual symbols, she became instantly recognizable. Not fashionable. Iconic.

In your world:

Choose something, anything. Maybe it’s your favorite shape, color, pattern or silhouette. Show it off, be proud of who you are and what you love. Use it over and over— one day, others will see it on someone else, and it will remind them of you. Give up the never-ending game of ‘what if’ and make your reflection someone you recognize.

✦ 3. Don’t Fit the Frame—Distort It

Stop begging people to accept you by wearing the same thing as everyone else. This is the crux. You must get over your ego; you must be brave enough to try something new.

Casati’s animals were not accessories. They were extensions of who she was, her personality, her aura. She walked cheetahs on gold chains through public squares not as a stunt, but as a method to showcase her inner world.

In your world:

You may not walk with beasts—but you can cultivate an aura that suggests anything you want. It doesn’t need to be extravagant; maybe its a signature perfume, or jewelry that makes people look twice. Perhaps it’s a signature eye look, or the way you tie your laces or your ties. This doesn't need to be chaotic, only symbolic. Take what you like, no matter how subtle, and amplify it until it no longer fits in the box.

✦ 4. Discomfort is the Price of Power

If what you want is to be unforgettable, you have to give up the desire to be liked by everyone. That’s the cowards way out. In reality, it doesn't matter if you are praised, feared, insulted or revered, as all of those are markings of the unforgettable.

Casati was not concerned with elegance. She was concerned with effect. Her clothing was often physically unbearable—corsets that constricted breath, headdresses that made sitting impossible, fabrics that shimmered like fever dreams. But her discomfort became part of the performance. The suffering was the spell.

In your world:

Don’t confuse fashion with power. Fashion is not style. Fashion is the mannequin on perfect display, style are the details you add, what you pair it with, the way you morph it. Relish in the knowledge that people won’t know if you’re beautiful or mad. That’s where the power lives, because that’s what people will remember. You.

One of my favorite mantas is beauty is pain.

Wear the 6-inch heels, slick back your hair. Pin the earrings that are overweight and bulbous, straighten your back and square your shoulders. Put the work in and walk like you mean it. Attention is not noise—it is gravity. It pulls, distorts, magnetizes.

Marchesa Luisa Casati may have died in poverty, but she did not die in obscurity. She accomplished something that all of the money in the world couldn’t buy: the right to be remembered.

Let them wonder where you came from. Let them speak your name with reverence or ridicule, be brave enough not to give a damn.

In the realm of power, to be seen is to survive, but to be unforgettable is to rule.

Jay Gatsby had everything.

The wealth, the parties, the spectacle. His mansion shimmered like a mirage, filled with strangers who danced through his life and vanished by morning, champagne spilling like secrets into his marble pool. Chandeliers swung above—swaying gently, as if echoing the breathless pulse of the crowd.

He was the master of illusion, sculpting himself into an enigma of elegance and power. He believed he could bridge the chasm between who he was and who he longed to be, but no matter how flawlessly he performed, the past remained just beyond his grasp, indifferent to the man he was so desperate to become.

Gatsby would never reach his dream—because the power he needed to get there was something bigger than himself. He didn’t lack ambition—he lacked connection. And no dream survives in isolation.

His parties swelled with strangers he made no effort to understand. He haunted a house that was never really his. He mistook spectacle for strength, believing wealth would summon devotion. Jay Gatsby isolated himself behind a carefully curated image, and when he died, it was only silence who showed up to remember him.

Style can open doors, command rooms, even ignite alliances. But it can just as easily become a barrier. Many people misunderstand this, some dismissing fashion as frivolous, and others by becoming prisoners of their own hyper-specific aesthetic worlds.

Power doesn’t belong to those who isolate themselves—it belongs to those who understand how to move between worlds, building ties without surrendering individuality. Power requires fluency, not fixation.

The following are moments where your personal style can turn against you— and how to hold the line.

Trap #1: The Fortress Wardrobe
When Safe Dressing Becomes a Cage

Some believe power lies in playing it safe, that restraint and uniformity is a gateway to authority. They choose tailored blazers in familiar cuts and neutral palettes; polished, yes, but forgettable—the aesthetic equivalent of a firm handshake, and nothing more. They dress for approval, not presence— blending into boardrooms, disappearing into the very spaces they’re trying to command. In refusing any aesthetic distinction, they may feel quite proper, but this is traded for invisibility.

The Man Who Blended In

T.S. Eliot, one of the greatest poets of his time, dressed in total conformity. He took pride in belonging to the literary establishment and dressed accordingly: gray suits, muted ties, subdued, reserved, almost invisible. His clothes reflected the man behind The Waste Land—brilliant, but buttoned-up.

Oscar Wilde, on the other hand, made his wardrobe an extension of himself— his intellect, wonder and wit. He seemed to be both provocative and performative at the same time, wearing velvet jackets and signature silk stockings; his style was as daring and sharp as his pen.

Remember:

A refined wardrobe should embody you, not erase you.

Even when striving for minimalism, you must have a signature: a color, a silhouette, a detail, something that speaks before you do. This can be small, such as a ring you always wear, or large, such as a bright red trench coat.

The goal is not to vanish—it's to become unmistakable, even subtly, yourself.

Trap #2: The False Sense of Superiority
Ignoring the Power of Social Codes

Dismissing fashion as frivolous or rejecting social dress codes does not signal independence— it signals detachment. This behavior can be deeply off-putting; no one enjoys being around someone who acts as though dressing well is beneath them—it signals that you think you're above everyone else. Clothing is a kind of unspoken diplomacy. Refusing to engage with those signals doesn’t elevate you; it excludes you.

The Queen Who Mistook Excess for Influence

Marie Antoinette cloaked herself in theatrical excess at a time that called for restraint. Her towering wigs and frothy gowns didn’t consolidate power—they alienated her.

By contrast, Napoleon Bonaparte adopted a sleek, militaristic style that visually aligned him with his soldiers. He was a master strategist—on the battlefield and in perception—understanding that visual coherence could reinforce loyalty and authority. His uniform wasn’t just functional—it was a symbol of shared identity, discipline, and control.

Remember:

The strongest dressers do not reject social codes outright— they manipulate them to their advantage. Study the visual dynamics of your surroundings— the aim is to translate, not conform. Adaptation is not surrender. It’s fluency.

Trap #3: The Aesthetic Bubble
Niche Becomes Limitation

There’s power in signature style—until it becomes static. If you don’t evolve, you become a caricature of yourself, which will elicit sympathy, at best. Whether it’s rigid minimalism, historical cosplay, or avant-garde extremity, the result is the same: your style becomes a cage, confining you to an outdated version of yourself.

The Fall of the Visionary

Elsa Schiaparelli built her legend on surrealist couture—lobster gowns, trompe l’oeil buttons, sculptural whimsy. But after WWII, her dreamworld felt irrelevant to a public craving structure and simplicity. Christian Dior’s “New Look” captured the post-war feminine ideal. Schiaparelli’s house closed in 1954. Decades later, the house of Schiaparelli rose again—not by abandoning surrealism, but by reimagining it for the now. Daniel Roseberry’s modern reinterpretations show the strength of aesthetic fluidity—how style evolves without dissolving.

Remember:

Power lies in evolution—not abandonment, but reinvention. The most enduring dressers are those who can step beyond their niche without losing themselves. Your style should be a foundation, not a coffin.

Trap #4: The Chameleon Complex
Trend-Hopping

In a grand effort to avoid irrelevance, some swing to the opposite extreme: constant reinvention, the trend chasers. They wear every aesthetic like a costume, always in sync with the moment but never with themselves. They’re always seen, but never truly known, not by others, and certainly not by themselves. A key indicator is that these people are way too easy to shop for— whatever is most popular at any given moment will do.

The Eternal Follower

Think of the friend, coworker or influencer who shifts their entire aesthetic with each trend cycle—clean girl one month, mob wife the next, coquette the following. Their wardrobe is a mood board of borrowed identities, but there’s no through-line, no signature. Without a consistent point of view, nothing sticks, and no matter what they wear they never really stand out. They become forgettable because of their predictability. Only the truly unique have the ability to hold the spotlight, at least for more than 15 minutes.

Remember:

A strong aesthetic doesn’t require reinvention at every turn—it requires refinement over time. Anchoring is key: choose one or two visual signatures that remain consistent across your evolution. Let trend be spice, not sustenance.

Final Interpretation: If Power is the Party, Style Sends the Invitation

Style is a signal. Power is a network. And both suffocate in solitude.

Before John F. Kennedy ever set foot in the Oval Office, he mastered one of the most elusive principles of influence: the art of perception.

At a time when politicians draped themselves in charcoal, Kennedy chose navy.

This wasn’t the blue of boyhood, school uniforms or afternoons spent by the sea, but a deeper, regal hue. A shade that didn’t just stand apart but stood above, signaling a quiet shift in a room full of tradition. At first glance, it seems to be an inconsequential choice. But it wasn’t— it was an ode.

Kennedy had a secret muse.

Not a statesman, not a general, not even a woman.

A spy, who was daring, dashing, charming and in control. A man so compelling that Kennedy, in his own way, sought to become him. The man who captured Kennedy’s attention was Bond. James Bond.

Kennedy was enthralled by Ian Fleming’s creation, devouring the novels with an admiration that went beyond mere entertainment. He was an avid reader of the series, even listing From Russia with Love among his ten favorite books in LIFE Magazine. In the pages of Fleming’s books, Bond’s uniform rarely wavered: a dark blue suit, a black knitted tie and a crisp white shirt. Kennedy read between the lines and realized that in a world of charcoal and gray, a man in color attracts attention.

For years, Kennedy had been dismissed. They called him untested. Not serious. Too young, too pretty. A boy trying to play chess with men.

Suddenly, something changed. Television had overtaken radio as America’s primary source of news. And so, for the very first time, in the first-ever televised presidential debate, John Fitzgerald Kennedy would debate live against Richard Milhous Nixon in Chicago, Illinois. Americans were no longer just listening to their candidates. They were watching them.

Kennedy wasn’t shaken, wasn’t stirred. The silver screen awaited him the way it did his muse— the glow of his sun-kissed skin and carefully applied makeup made his baby blue eyes gleam.

Beside him stood Nixon. He had refused makeup, convinced of its frivolity, and his gray, ill-fitted suit seemed to swallowed him whole. The heat of the lights caused beads of sweat to pool at his hairline, dripping into the corners of his mouth. His five o’clock shadow, barely noticeable in person, appeared harsh under the camera’s gaze, hollowing his face, making him look strained and exhausted.

On September 26, 1960, in front of 70 million Americans, the boy they underestimated was more than one move ahead. That night, it wasn’t a contest of words. It was a test of presence. And America, whether they knew it or not, had just chosen their new leading man.

Principle 2: Self-Signaling, Dressing for the Role Before He Had It

Research by Drazen Prelec and George Loewenstein on self-signaling suggests that individuals use their own behavior as evidence of who they are, reinforcing their identity through their actions. Kennedy’s commitment to his polished attire, composed body language, and charisma weren’t just external— it was a form of psychological conditioning.

By always dressing with authority, he internalized the belief that he was already the leader America needed. The public never saw him flustered, underdressed, or unprepared. His image remained perfectly consistent, reinforcing the perception that he was in total control.

Principle 3: Reinforcing Perception Through Consistency

John Gotti, one of the most notorious gangsters in American history, played the role of mafia kingpin with effortless charm. Unlike his predecessors in the Gambino crime family who thrived in the shadows, Gotti reveled in the spotlight— basking in the glow of paparazzi flashes, silks, and diamonds. While other bosses blended into their surroundings, Gotti dined at high-end restaurants, openly spoke to and courted the media, and flaunted the empire he presided over. He seemed untouchable— evading the FBI at each turn and earning himself the nickname The Teflon Don. He was handsome, charismatic, feared, adored, and utterly blinded by hubris.

While his predecessors cloaked their power in understated suits, cloaked inside of the shadows, Gotti had became a spectacle. He was too admired, too envied, too visible ever be able to survive. His overexposure made him an obsession for prosecutors, relentless to catch this man who had humiliated them time and time again.

When his downfall finally arrived, it wasn’t in a blaze of glory, but in the whispers of his grandmother’s apartment. A tape recording taken by his own men, his most trusted second-in-command, was handed over to the FBI without his knowledge. The blinding of his hubris blazed so brightly he never saw it coming.

Gotti’s downfall wasn’t inevitable—it was self-inflicted. He failed to recognize that true power isn’t about being seen; true power is about being in control of what others see.

His mistake wasn’t dressing well—it was dressing without strategy. Unlike Gotti, those who master perception understand that style isn’t just about expression; it’s about direction. This is where The Decoy Effect comes into play—a way to command attention while keeping your true power concealed.

The Decoy Effect: Using Statement Pieces to Distract and Control Perception

Misdirection isn’t just a trick of the eye, it’s a psychological principle that can shape how people perceive the world. In the realm of personal style, you can use this to your advantage by allowing your fashion choices to act as decoys— guiding attention where you want it to be by concealing vulnerabilities and/or intentions to align your appearance with your end-game.

How the Decoy Effect Works in Style

This works in three steps: drawing focus, diverting attention, and controlling your narrative.

1. Drawing Focus: The brain is wired to notice contrast and novelty. A statement piece, a bold necklace, oversized belt, red lip— these anchor attention, making them the focal point others will naturally be drawn to.

2. Diverting Attention: By controlling where people look, you shift their focus away from aspects you’d rather keep concealed—whether it’s an insecurity, hesitation, or hidden strength.

3. Controlling the Narrative: A statement piece doesn’t just attract attention—it shapes perception. It crafts a narrative about who you are while keeping other elements ambiguous.

One of the most famous practitioners of this was Rasputin.

A more noble example is Abraham Lincoln.

Like Rasputin, Lincoln understood that when people fixate on the surface, they fail to see what’s happening beneath it.

Strategic Uses of the Decoy Effect

In Professional Settings

Lean into a classic, not stereotypical, look. Keep your shirts pressed, embrace more traditional attire, keep yourself nicely tended to. Loud, brand name items will diminish this appeal. Your goal is to dress in a way where you would look appropriate showing up just about anywhere. Weave your personality into details, such as buttons, jewelry, a signature color, etc.

Social Occasions

Wear something eye-catching that will be an easy conversation-starter. It will allow you to guide the flow of the evening without having to speak to or highlight anything you’re uncomfortable with, such as a blemish, a bad day, or any interpersonal issue.

Subverting Expectations

Lean in. Lean in to what makes you, you. This can be done with a statement piece, your background, a favorite color. Let people think what they want of you. If they dismiss you because of it, even better.

Let Gotti’s mistakes be a reminder

Power Lies in Mystery: When your style does not immediately reveal your intentions, you create an air of intrigue. This forces others to project their own assumptions onto you, granting you control over their perceptions and keeping them engaged without fully understanding your next move.

Ambiguity Creates a Psychological Advantage: When people cannot easily categorize you, they are more likely to respect, fear, or desire your presence. A carefully curated, enigmatic style prevents others from forming fixed expectations, ensuring that you remain unpredictable and, therefore, powerful. This is the art of distraction.

The path becomes more familiar, easier, and soon he cannot imagine another way to navigate the tangled woods. He moves without question, with ease, guided by something he feels is inevitable. This is the power of quiet influence—not to force, not to control, but to become something others cannot help but follow. Personal style is one of the greatest tools we have in manifesting aspirations, projecting authority, and creating a lasting legacy. By dressing all the way to the end, you can align your current presence with the future you’re building.

The most powerful people are the ones with the highest level of influence. They have become irreplaceable, perpetually just outside our grasp. In style, this is achieved through exclusivity, through creating an image and presence others come to rely on. Having people depend on you isn’t about control; its subtle, even comforting. We like having someone to look to, someone to help us see the way. Even envy, when expected, becomes familiar—and familiarity breeds comfort. When people come to rely on you, even their envy won’t be able to keep them away.

I believe there are three key methods to mastering dependence: employing signature pieces as a calling card, mastering the art of exclusivity, and understanding the psychology of visual authority.

Use a Signature Piece as Your Calling Card

What do you want to be known for? An easier way to think about this is what do you want to project? A distinct, recognizable element—whether a color, accessory, or silhouette—becomes a visual shorthand for your presence. Over time, people will instinctively associate it with you, even if you weren’t the first to adopt it. Recognition is power, and when your signature piece becomes second nature to others, you become unforgettable.

Someone who adopted this brilliantly was Salvador Dalí.

Supporting Research

The Mere Exposure Effect, identified by psychologist Robert Zajonc in 1968, suggests that people develop a preference for things simply because they are familiar with them. By consistently showcasing a signature piece, you increase others' familiarity with it, thereby enhancing their liking for it and, by extension, their like towards you.

Crafting a Signature That Sticks:

• Claim a Signature Scent: Wear the same fragrance daily to create an olfactory imprint. Scent is the most nostalgic of our senses—over time, your perfume becomes more than just a fragrance; it becomes you. The moment someone catches a hint of it elsewhere, they’ll think of you instantly.

• Invest in a Monogrammed Item: A monogram transforms the ordinary into something unique. The detail that transforms something everyday (such as a tote or a lipstick).

Master the Art of Exclusivity

In our world of fast-fashion and mass production, rarity is power. By curating an image that revolves around exclusive, hard-to-find, or limited-edition items, you will become very intriguing. People look to what they can’t or don’t have.

• To clarify: exclusivity isn’t about wealth; it’s about distinctiveness. If you are the only one wearing or doing something, you are exclusive. (unique hair pin, way of tying a scarf or tie, repeated pops of the same color, unexpected accessory worn with unwavering consistency.)

Karl Lagerfeld did this quite simply with his signature fan.

The Scarcity Principle, introduced by psychologist Robert Cialdini in 1984, posits that people assign greater value to items perceived as scarce. By curating exclusive or limited-edition pieces, you enhance your perceived value, making others more eager to associate with you.

How to begin

1. Avoid mass-market shops. Begin to look into individual artisans, or vintage pieces. Places like eBay or Etsy are perfect. Seek out rare, one-of-a-kind clothing that can’t be easily replicated.

2. Alter off-the-rack clothing to have them tailored to fit you perfectly. It will give your items a bespoke look and feel at a fraction of the price, while additionally making your Zara item look like Barney’s (I know, I know).

3. Limit your social media. Stop sharing everything. Select certain highlights that will inspire intrigue within your lifestyle and wardrobe, but never over-share.

Understand the Psychology of Visual Authority

Dress as though you already posses the confidence and authority you’re after. It may seem too simple to be true, but by doing this, you will subconsciously command respect and attention from those around you. Once they begin to look to you, not at you, you will become someone they seek guidance from. This can have a dramatic ripple effect stylistically and in interpersonal situations.

One of the most memorable examples of this is Winston Churchill.

The concept of Enclothed Cognition was introduced by Hajo Adam and Adam D. Galinsky in 2012. Their research demonstrated that wearing attire associated with authority and attentiveness, such as a doctor's lab coat, not only affects how others perceive you but also enhances your own confidence and performance. This phenomenon underscores the power of dressing with intention, as you can physically embody the traits you wish to project.

How color shapes our emotions, influences our behaviors, and guides the choices we make—sometimes without our conscious awareness.

Color is so fascinating to me.

Perhaps I adore a hue that makes your skin crawl.

Maybe I love that color because it’s part of a core memory, while you have no emotion tied to it whatsoever. I can wear a certain color to channel a specific energy: to feel brave, appear trustworthy, or convey control, confidence. You might associate a color with me that I am completely unaware of— I hadn’t even realized it was a signature of mine. That’s the amusing beauty of color: it’s something we all see outwardly, yet when we look inward, it’s much more complex.

The idea that we could both look at the same sky and see different blues, only to be convinced in each other that we are both seeing the exact same shade is endlessly fascinating to me. I will never know for certain if the blue that I see is the one you see, too. The fact that we can’t describe a color without referencing another makes color feel more like a concept, something elusive we’re aware of, but can’t quite grasp.

If we’re each seeing unique fragments of the spectrum, unable to realize the difference between the ‘same’ color we’re all witnessing, how much else in life slips past our awareness? How will we know what we are unaware of? This little crack in our shared perception of reality keeps me up at night, scribbling and writing away.

Color defines us. It’s not just something we see; it’s something we feel.

It’s the unspoken language of our emotions. It showcases all of the things we feel, even if we choose not to say. According to the Color Emotion Guide (Kaya & Epps, 2004), every hue carries its own emotional charge. Therefore, by choosing to align yourself with a specific color, you’re doing more than selecting a favorite; you’re actively influencing how others perceive and respond to you. You’re controlling this part of your image.

Pavlov’s theory of associative learning clearly demonstrated that our brains instinctively link connected repeated stimuli to specific responses. This principle isn’t limited to conditioned tasks, it applies just as powerfully to color. When you repeatedly align yourself with certain colors, those hues begin to shape how others feel about you. The emotions and traits tied to the color become tied to you. Over time, even if the characteristics don’t perfectly match your personality, the connection becomes undeniable. The colors stop being something you wear— they become a core part of your identity.

Red: Power, passion, and boldness—commanding attention and evoking confidence. On the color wheel, its the opposite of Green.

A study published in Science found that red enhances performance on tasks requiring precision and careful consideration, like proofreading. This is due to its association with danger, which triggers heightened awareness and attention.

Orange: Energy, spontaneity, and playfulness—sparking creativity and warmth. Opposite of Indigo.

• Curious Insight: A study in Appetite Journal found that orange environments can subtly influence people to make more impulsive food choices— it’s a highly motivating color. This extends to decision-making, where orange encourages quicker, less inhibited choices. It’s a color of immediacy and spontaneity.

Yellow: Optimism, approachability, and cheer—projecting vibrancy and positivity. Opposite of Violet.

• Curious Insight: Yellow can increase dopamine levels and spark feelings of competitiveness, not just happiness. Conversely, a study in Color Research and Application found that exposure to yellow enhances creativity and mental clarity, likely because it stimulates the release of dopamine and promotes optimism in problem-solving scenarios.

Green: Balance, renewal, and morality—symbolizing harmony and sustainability. Opposite of Red.

• Curious Insight: A study by the University of Toronto found that individuals exposed to green before completing tasks made fewer unethical decisions than those exposed to other colors. The researchers concluded that green is psychologically linked to fairness and moral integrity.

Blue: Trust, calm, and dependability—communicating authority with ease. Opposite of Orange.

• Curious Insight: Blue can slow down time perception. While known for calmness, it also influences how long tasks feel, making them seem less tedious. These findings indicate that blue's calming properties may extend to altering our temporal perceptions, making tasks seem less tedious when surrounded by blue hues.

Indigo: Introspection, nostalgia, and mystique—evoking depth and emotional connection. Opposite of golden yellow or warm orange, depending on the level of violet.

• Curious Insight: Indigo can deepen a sense of nostalgia and enhance emotional storytelling. It’s particularly effective in creating a sense of introspection or emotional depth. A study in Color and Emotion found that indigo hues stimulate areas of the brain associated with memory recall, particularly in autobiographical memories. This makes it a strong choice for creating a sense of personal connection or depth in visual settings.

Violet (Purple): Luxury, creativity, and ambition—suggesting sophistication and imagination. Opposite of Yellow.

• Curious Insight: Purple can manipulate perceptions of time and luxury. In particular, violet tones are linked to an inflated sense of value and patience. A study in The Journal of Retailing found that stores with purple accent lighting influenced customers to spend more time browsing. The color subtly suggested exclusivity and sophistication, which heightened the desire to linger and explore.

As discussed earlier in this series, clothing can be used as a way to visually present who you are to the world. Every powerful figure with an enduring legacy has carefully crafted their appearance to best suit their end goals and control the conversation around them. Their style becomes synonymous with who they are and what they stand for.

Create Your Style Dictionary

How do I want others to see me? Perception is powerful— if you don’t define who you are, you’ll risk having someone else do it for you. A great place to start is to think of specific words that describe how you want to be perceived.

For example, you could want to be seen as:

• Opulent, lavish, decadent

• Minimalistic, clean, understated

• Effortless, relaxed, natural

• Magnetic, alluring, captivating, charismatic

• Edgy, bold, daring, rebellious

• Playful, quirky, lighthearted

How to begin:

1. Think of three to five adjectives you identify with.

2. Now, think of your most-worn items. Are they close to what you’re imagining, or are they speaking a language you’ve outgrown? Is something missing?

3. Later, go stand in front of a full-length mirror. How do you see yourself now? What small thing could you do to feel closer to your descriptors? Think: Do I need an accessory, or should I remove one? Should I simplify, or am I too muted? Is this silhouette highlighting my best features? Do my shoes elevate the look, or are they too casual?

Build Your Foundation

Once you’ve decided how you want to appear, the next move is being able to translate your vision into wardrobe. Think of this as your cornerstone: your carefully selected items that best define who you are and what you most love.

How to begin:

1. Research the people you admire. Find someone with style you admire and look at their wardrobes. Focus on core elements, or signature pieces. Ask yourself, what’s one piece that truly reflects who I am?

2. Then, start looking for it. Choose one key piece to invest in. It doesn’t need to be expensive to be an investment, it just has to elevate your sense of self.

3. Later, take photos of outfits you love best. See someone on the subway with a killer look? Take a photo. Loved your outfit today? Take a photo. Make an album in your phone. You can use this as reference, later, when you’re unsure of what to wear.

Visualize Your Endgame

Look from the outside, in. By viewing yourself in third-person, you can connect where you are now to where you want to go. This is not about identifying flaws and should not be used as such. This detached perspective allows you to create tangible steps to place your goal in reach.

To begin, ask yourself:

1. Who is one celebrity or public figure I’d be thrilled to be compared to?

2. How do I want others to feel when they see me—impressed, inspired, intrigued?

3. If my wardrobe were part of a movie, what type of character would I play?

Style is the blueprint for your endgame—the way you project yourself now can guide you toward the person you’re destined to become. Be true to yourself and never forsake your favorites. There’s a reason you love them so much—it could be the texture, the weight, the color, the feeling. Whatever it is, pull the thread. Trust me when I say that denying something you adore will only make you feel like an imposter. Your dreams will become reality the second you realize that you can be the person you want to be, now.

Tactics for Controlled Disruption

Break the Rhythm
Introducing something bold or unexpected into your outfit compels others to recalibrate their perception of you. This moment of cognitive dissonance will make you mesmerizing and unpredictable. Power is the resource of attention— once lost, its nearly impossible to regain. They will have become bored, complacent in your offerings, and on the prowl for something new.

Alexander McQueen vs. Calvin Klein

Calvin Klein built his legacy on minimalism, monochrome palettes and clean, striking silhouettes. However, as time passed, what once felt fresh and modern became predictable and overly commercial. The provocative campaigns that once defined the brand became less shocking as society grew accustomed to increasingly scandalous advertising, resulting in Klein becoming mainstream instead of trend-setting. It’s necessary to remember that Calvin Klein’s decline during this time was not because minimalism failed, but because it became static and devoid of reinvention.

In contrast, Alexander McQueen mastered the art of breaking the rhythm. From the 1999 robot-sprayed dress to the the 2001 Voss show, where models appeared trapped inside of a glass box, preforming as if we were watching them from inside an asylum. McQueen’s collections didn’t just showcase fashion, they delivered narratives that shocked and unsettled, leaving audiences addicted to the unexpected.

Reimagine Your Signature
Having a signature style creates familiarity, which builds recognition and influence.

However, refusing to evolve your look over time will have the opposite effect: you will become boxed into one archetype, playing a caricature of yourself. The duality of something familiar, yet simultaneously ever-changing creates vast, prolonged intrigue. By being able to shift your signature looks into new silhouettes, proportions, conventions, you will disrupt the mental framework that others have built around you. No one will be able to define you but yourself.

Elvis Presley vs. David Bowie

It’s hard to think of two people who captured audiences the way that Elvis and Bowie did. Elvis Presley’s aesthetic was once a signal of his trailblazing spirit, the bold and glamorous wardrobe was something the world reveled in. But as time passed, his inability to transcend his glory days became a symbol of his stagnation. His style seemed frozen in time, only emphasizing the decline of his personal and professional life.

David Bowie’s mastered the art of reinvention. From the glittering alien mystique of Ziggy Stardust to the elegance of the Thin White Duke, Bowie constantly evolved. His transformations weren’t just visual— they reflected his adaptability and cultural intuition, making his imagination the ultimate muse. Always ahead of the times, Bowie proved that you can change as many times as you wish while always remaining true to yourself. Embracing change then is no longer an option, it’s an art.

Use the Power of Color
Color evokes incredible emotional responses that help mold our perception of others. The key is knowing when to alter your wardrobe dependent on situation. You can use this to your advantage by understanding that color is more than mere aesthetic— it is a tool to signal what we want others to feel.

Elizabeth Holmes vs. Steve Jobs

Elizabeth Holmes, founder of failed tech start-up Theranos and convicted felon, believed that by wearing the uniform of her hero, Steve Jobs, she would evoke the same emotional reaction he provoked in others, in her. And it worked, until it didn’t. Due to her fraudulent nature, people quickly saw that her attempt to dress like her hero was nothing more than a childish, thinly veiled attempt to manipulate her public perception. Rather than commanding the authority and focus of Jobs, her wardrobe reinforced her inauthenticity.

What Steve Jobs’ black turtleneck exuded was understated power and purpose. While his color palette was composed of just two notes, the way he presented himself ensured peoples attention went where he wanted it to go: towards his inventions. His simple wardrobe became an integral part of his power— his black turtlenecks became an extension of who he was: a man determined to create something new. Holmes failed because lacked the substance required for true vision to be executed. Jobs succeeded by understanding that his wardrobe was a tool to align his true image with his power, creating immense influence.

A word of caution: don’t use these concepts as a way to lose control of yourself. You cant disrupt if you don’t have a defined style. Chaotic wardrobe choices can lead people to assume that you have no control over your life. What you decide to show the world is critical in cultivating your image. If the idea of embracing your unique self feels unsettling, ask yourself why. What does it reveal if blending in feels safer than standing out?
