The best disappearing acts all have one thing in common: the audience never sees it coming.

For three weeks, she’d been preparing. Tags and packing peanuts cluttered the floor as she delicately stepped over the cheap metal shipping hangers to examine her look in the full-length mirror. She had already sent back two dresses that looked nearly identical, as well as a litany of ugly step-sisters who were cursed with the wrong neckline, poor coloring, or worst of all, translusence. Finally, she had found a winner! Silky and midnight blue, her dress swept across the floor over her toes, spaghetti straps dainty resting on her shoulders. Open-toed heels revealed a light pink pedicure (shade: bubblebath), and her hands closed around a small purse she planned to keep tucked away for the majority of the evening.

As we walked into the venue, air-wrapped curls bouncing inside of her Bottega-esque earrings, I saw her have what looked like a thousand tiny spasms: a flurry of micro-adjustments and preening, one last chance at a perfect first look, like a general preparing to walk into a glamorous battle.

We were barely inside for 5 minutes when an acquaintance came whipping across the hall in our direction. Over the moon, she grabbed my friend’s forearm and with stars in her eyes she squealed Ohmygod! We’re twins!

For the first time in nearly a month, my friend relaxed like a limp marionette, shoulders dropping with relief and genuine delight. All that work, all that research. Standing in front of her was real, social proof that her efforts hadn't been in vain. Her body language morphed into someone lighter, happier, she seemed like she was finally herself again.

And that’s when I saw it.

Right before my eyes, with a masterful slight-of-hand, she preformed the greatest magic trick I’d ever seen.

She disappeared.

Every person carries two competing biological needs:

the need to fit in and the need to be seen. We satisfy these opposing needs by identifying with groups and occasions that make us feel like we belong, while still feeling like ourselves. The issue is that fitting in almost always requires reducing your willingness to be seen as different, and most people make that trade without knowing they made it.

This is exactly what happened to my friend. She belonged so completely to the occasion she could not be individually located within it.

When you outsource your opinion to the masses, you stop dressing as yourself and start dressing as a consensus. You are not making a choice based on what makes you proud. You are making a choice based on what is most likely to go unquestioned. The algorithm is a compelling force precisely because it makes you feel like you are doing something right by following it. But the algorithm has no distinct face, no specific presence. It cannot be chosen, championed, or remembered.

My friend didn’t disappear because she failed. She disappeared because she succeeded at becoming the average of everyone else’s decisions.

Each of The 9 bend to this pressure differently.

The Architect edits until nothing controversial remains, so refined they lose their signature all together. The Anchor wears what worked five years ago because it still ‘works’, which is the problem. The Heir defers to what the occasion expects instead of what they believe would be best. The Seeker picks something specific, loses their nerve, and arrives in something safer. The Proxy (my friend) arrives as a carbon-copy and mistakes it for personality. The Performer recreates whatever made them feel most complimented instead of trying something new. The Sleepwalker would fold under pressure and refuse to attend, and The Shadow would strip away all sense of self to become deliberately unreadable. The most dangerous thing about this is that it feels like a choice.

Do you know which one you are?

She is liked by everyone and can be described by no one.

She’s the person whose name someone snaps their fingers trying to remember. Her social equivalency is the same as a file marked Case Closed! All relevant information has been collected and there’s nothing new to report. Remarkable things don’t happen to her because she’s not the first, second or third person that anyone thinks of. She looks like everyone else and because of this, she’s passed over every time.

The first thing you feel is jealousy. The second thing you feel is that jealousy is the wrong word.

You’re not looking at someone who has something you want. You’re looking at someone who has become something you didn't know was possible.

There’s a sharp thrill found inside of mastery, a satisfaction found in relentlessly asking more of yourself. Practicing until your muscles elongate like a daddy long legs, feeling your toenails stripped backwards, your muscles broken and wrapped around your finger. A broken doll whose fragility is merely superficial, a mirage, twirling in endless perfect circles in front of an infinity of mirrors.

We envy it, we hate it, it disgusts us, it moves us, we want to crawl inside the skin it’s in and feel the glory for ourselves.

Balletcore is the only aesthetic that punishes you for wanting it.

Balletcore has devoured over one billion views on TikTok. The average view lasts roughly 39 seconds, which means a word that didn’t exist before 2022 has consumed nearly 1,300 years of continuous human attention.

This is different from every other aesthetic fascination because it has so little to do with the actual clothes. We crave the body, the ideal, the fantasy that such a devoted discipline is waiting to be unlocked inside of us. Dormant but for the right pair of leg warmers, the right note of Chopin.

No one who buys the ribbon flats has ever bled through a pointe shoe. Ballet represents something most people will never have: a body that does exactly what it’s told.

This fixation did not begin with Aronofsky, and it’s not going to end with TikTok. Edgar Degas painted the Paris Opéra Ballet obsessively for over thirty years, producing more than six hundred works of the same subject: ballerinas being corrected. Not on stage, fantastically soaring through the air, but at the barre. Backs straightened, positions adjusted, bodies measured again and again and again. The paintings are beautiful because the discipline is visible. That’s what transfixes us. Balletcore is not a trend that found an audience. It is a fixation that found a hashtag.

Black Swan arrived in 2010 and was toe-curlingly brutal, completely impossible to look away from. Nina’s all-consuming obsession with perfection was written into her wardrobe: pink stockings over knit leg warmers, purpled bruises and gauzy bandages, a sick, accessorized beauty where her wounds were ornamental, proof of her unwavering effort, commitment. Natalie Portman was beautiful, she was grotesque, she was magnetic in her transcendent desire to seduce perfection into the palms of her hands.

Black Swan proved what Balletcore still hasn’t absorbed: the embodiment comes from an internal drive, or it doesn’t come at all.

On March 8, 2022, Miuccia Prada sent a model down the runway in satin ballet flats paired with leg warmers, and as a society we decided that this was the only shoe that had ever mattered. By the end of that year, the Lyst Index recorded a 1,100% spike in searches for the flat, naming it the hottest product of 2022. Miu Miu shoe sales were up 200% from the beginning of that year alone.

The number itself isn’t remarkable. A good runway can cause nearly anything to have a good 15 minutes of fame. What’s unique about Miu Miu is that it was the clothes that went viral, not the celebrity wearing them. This is extraordinarily rare in an era where product placement drives cultural relevance. In this corporate realm of reality, this product created its own gravity.

Miu Miu secured the title of hottest brand of both 2022 and 2023, fueled entirely by the satin flat. Sales were up 50% by Q4 of 2023. A single shoe. A single runway. Three years of compounding financial consequence.

The greatest contradiction? The Miu Miu flat is not a ballet shoe. It’s the suggestion of one.

Satin, a ribbon detail, a low profile, the silhouette of discipline without a single demand of it. Miu Miu understood before the rest of the industry did that what women wanted was not ballet. What they wanted was the feeling of having chosen something that precise, that considered, something that said: I know exactly who I am and I dressed accordingly.

In recent months, the most telling detail of the Balletcore wave is how many designers have cast professional dancers instead of models. Alainpaul, who trained at the Opera Marseille, built his entire Paris debut around rehearsal studio attire. Tiler Peck, principal dancer of the New York City Ballet, closed the Adeam show en pointe. When NikeSKIMS released its Spring 2026 collection, LISA from BLACKPINK was the star, shot alongside professional ballerinas, without a Kardashian in sight. A brilliant decision, and a deliberate one, to show rather than tell that the brand understood this as something deeper than a trend. The body was always the subject. The clothes? Supporting characters.

Everything you're wearing is right.

You have everything on the list. The fitted blazer, the Miu Miu-esque ballet flats, the pinstripe trousers, the Fendi baguette. Your hair is gorgeous, sitting in a halo around your face in a shape you’ve been convinced that only a $600 styling tool could create. Your kitten heels are a deep shade of plum, and the clicking sound they make as you move from room to room makes you feel like you’re dressed just well enough to be in the next Devil Wears Prada, maybe even Miranda would be proud. Your Russian manicure is as tastefully done as your baby botox, just enough to assume. Everything, down to the background on your phone, has been strategically and perfectly crafted to ooze poise.

And yet, something’s wrong.

When you imagine yourself walking into a room, it feels so real. You fantasize about how your entrance will reverberate, an awe-inspired, time-slowing ripple. One-by-one, they look you up and down as their backs instinctively straighten, completely oblivious to the small talk they were just making. You feel calm, in control, proud to be held in high esteem by your colleagues, and proud to know that you make it look so effortless. As you turn to address the room you find it grows quiet; everyone naturally poised to listen to what you have to say.

Reality is far different. Like a mirage in a desert, the fantasy vanishes before your very eyes. You walk in, and they barely look up. Just like that, the moment is gone, and phone in hand you look down at your feet to make sure your heels aren’t caught in the carpet. Or at least that’s what you tell yourself, as your confidence evaporates from your body like the steam spiraling off your latte. You get the standard once-over. A coworker gives you a nod. But no one notices. No one says a fucking thing.

The outfit you were so prepared to show off, the manicure you anticipated for weeks, the Dyson you bought in scheduled payments, they’re starting to feel less and less like the brilliant investments they once were. The plan you made to stand out has betrayed you. You feel the bitter resentment well up when you look in the mirror and realize that once again, it’s placed you squarely in the middle. People looked through you. Even though you did everything, everything, exactly right. In fact, you did it better than right. You did it perfectly.

The problem is impossible to see because you’ve camouflaged yourself into it.

THE LIE

“If I do it well enough, they'll finally see it.”

This sentence is underneath every purchase, it justifies every decision, it assembles every outfit with such care it could be graded. You’ve been so precise about what is appropriate for each context that it never occurred to you that appropriate and memorable are not the same thing.

You’re standing in front of your closet, and it’s completely full.

You’re frustrated, overwhelmed, staring at things you bought, things you kept, things you meant to return, and some things you can’t even explain.

As you’re standing there, you have the familiar, sharp paralysis of someone who has too much, but somehow not enough, and you think: How is it possible that I have absolutely nothing to wear?

Each year there seems to be a new magic wand: The capsule wardrobe, body type guides, your seasonal color analysis, investment dressing, the clean girl era, creating your Outfit Formula, on and on and on, each one with the same promise: Follow these rules, and you will never have this problem again. Follow these rules, and you will finally look like yourself. And so you do. But you don’t. And you have no idea why.

But I do.

You, my friend, do not have a style problem. You have a behavioral one.

You don’t know who you are, you know who you are supposed to be. And that gap creates a world of pain.

Every morning, whether you know it or not,

you are making a decision about your identity. The freakish thing is that there are only two ways to go: either you are in control, or something is controlling you. That ‘something else’ has several faces: The status-quo, your judgmental boss, what your friends are wearing, the version of yourself you were three years ago, what your parents would say. All of these voices in our head make us afraid to stand out, afraid to be embarrassed. We habitually make ourselves smaller every day, and then we wonder why deciding what to wear is exhausting.

When you search for answers, all you’re told is how to look like someone else. You’re given other people’s capsule wardrobes, other people’s outfit formulas, other people’s aesthetics, and you feel like a failure when it still doesn’t work.

It doesn’t work because it was never made for you. It was made for the idea of you. The category you represent. For your body type, your color palette, your Pinterest board. Nothing was made for the actual, specific, singular person standing in front of the mirror at 7am trying to figure out who they are today.

Your personal style is not your identity. It is the mechanism through which identity is formed. Appearance becomes behavior. Behavior becomes self. This loop has been running your entire life, whether you knew it or not. If you don’t understand what it’s currently building, then you are not in control of it. Someone else is writing your prophecy.

Someone notices a specific piece, an earring, a pin, something small and deliberate, and the Architect smiles. The smile of someone who has been understood, like you discovered the password to a hidden world, you saw what others missed.

Every piece means something. Nothing is chosen at random, nothing is leftover from an earlier version of themselves, nothing was kept out of laziness. Their outfit is a private text written in a vocabulary entirely their own. Often believed to be high-maintenance, The Architect has no interest the status-quo. They dress exactly as they intend to regardless of where they’re going, or who they’re seeing. No two Architects share a language, and that is the point, the aesthetic is irrelevant. The authorship is everything.

The Architect does not dress for your approval. They dress the way most people only dream of living: entirely on their own terms.

The Ghost

If you look at photographs from a few years ago, there’s someone there who looks more like themselves than the person you see now. The Ghost is present. They are here. They are functioning. And yet something underneath the surface has hollowed, so gradually and so quietly that most days they don’t notice, and on the days they do, they put the feeling away before it becomes something they have to address.

Getting dressed is a task that gets completed, just like everything else. If someone asks if they’re okay, there’s a flash of something— irritation, sadness, or the perhaps the exhaustion of being seen when you’ve been working very hard to be invisible. They resent the question because of what answering it honestly would cost: energy they no longer have.

There is no judgment here. The Ghost is surviving something. And surviving, for now, is enough.

The Performer

If the Performer likes your outfit, they’ll ask you who made it rather than just giving you the compliment. If you’re their friend and you told them you were wearing one thing and show up in another, they’ll make sure you don’t forget…and probably more than once. There is a slightly controlling energy around group appearance — it’s not malicious, and you’re not even sure they’re aware they’re doing it, but it’s there all the same. It’s a seemingly natural expression of someone for whom the visual stakes are always, always high.

Everything the Performer wears has been researched. Pinned. Cross-referenced against a complex internal system of what is right, what is approved, what will land the way it is intended to land. They make it look effortless. They’re your friend who has overnighted $500 of clothes for an event because the alternative felt genuinely unmanageable. The Performer understands this completely, and would never say so out loud.

They keep score, compulsively, eternally measuring. The person they’re most secretly envious of is the friend who simply doesn’t care, who throws something on. Who never even seems to think about it. The Performer has never not thought about it. And underneath all of it, quiet and patient, is an identity that has been waiting a long time to be asked its opinion.

The Anchor

The Anchor gets their favorite shoes resoled every year. They pay nearly what it would cost to just replace them, and they don’t think twice about it.

They’re genuinely surprised when people compliment their style. No false modesty, no humble-brag, they’re actually surprised. In their own mind, they basically wear the same thing every day. They think of their friends who are always changing, always experimenting as the stylish ones. And yet that exact person is often the one who stops to tell the Anchor how good they look, usually in a tone that contains something more than just a compliment.

The Anchor has something that cannot be purchased or assembled: a peaceful relationship with themselves. It takes no effort and costs nothing to maintain, giving them the confidence of someone who warms every room they walk into. The Anchor just is… and they have absolutely no idea how rare they really are.

The Shadow

To a stranger, the Shadow leaves no impression at all. They’re perfectly presentable, agreeable, they’re the living, breathing poster child for the status-quo. There is nothing about their presentation that would cause someone to to do a double-take, and beneath the surface, this is entirely intentional.

To close friends, they’re the one texting you at 8am to ask if their top is okay, and then again at 8:14 — always about a detail so minor you didn’t even notice it until they pointed it out. Their self-doubt doesn’t announce itself to the world. It surfaces only in safety, only with the people who have already been trusted, and even then it comes out as nervous laughter, constant second-guessing, and apologizing for things that don’t require an apology.

The Shadow has a vivid, specific, fully-formed interior world. They know exactly what they like. What they lack is permission, permission they’re waiting for from a source that has never actually withheld it, because the judgment they fear has not arrived and may never arrive. They talk themselves out of the thing they love before anyone has said a single word against it. The gap between what they are drawn to and what they actually wear is significant. They feel it every day.

The Heir

You know someone like this. The one who throws something on and arrives looking better than the people who hired a stylist. Who gets complimented on things they forgot they were wearing. Who makes effortlessness look less like a skill and more like a birthright.

You notice the piece they always wear, and ask about it. ‘This?” they say amusedly, “I’ve had this forever.’ What you don’t know is that they’ve given that answer a hundred times, and each time they’re just as surprised as the last. What puzzles them is that this is the thing people stop on — just an old ring, a worn-in jacket, a sweater they stole from their mom. It’s nothing special, per se, they just love it. They never thought anyone else would notice.

The Heir feels something close to guilt about how easily it comes — or if not guilt, a quiet bewilderment that the compliments keep arriving when they have done so little to earn them. They sometimes sense a subtle shift in how they’re treated, in how they’re spoken to, that makes them feel like they’re being studied or examined. That is the part they can’t explain. The room responds to something they cannot see in themselves.

The Seeker

If you know what the Seeker has been obsessed with lately, you will immediately understand why they arrived looking the way they did. When they read The Secret History they swapped out their contacts for a pince-nez, after they came back from Paris they stopped blow-drying their hair, and the month they watched The White Lotus marked the beginning of their linen phase. When they encounter something they love, a character, a painting, a stranger on the street, there is an immediate translation impulse: How do I make this a part of me?

People commonly mistake them for being indecisive or scatterbrained, but every version is real. Every era is genuine. The Seeker changes because they are intrigued, and what they’re intrigued by keeps expanding. The Seeker is not chasing anything, they are continuously arriving.

The Sleepwalker

Watch the Sleepwalker pass a window display, or notice someone’s outfit. For a fraction of a second, you’ll see something flash across their face, a nearly imperceptible longing. Recognition, maybe — of who they were, or who they could be, if they just had the energy to care like that again. In the blink of an eye, the moment ends, and they continue on like nothings happened.

The Sleepwalker used to care. They know they used to care. Getting dressed used to mean something, they remember it, even though it feels like a lifetime ago. Somewhere between then and now, it all became routine. They’re burnt out in the specific, under-acknowledged way that creeps up and quietly removes things from your life until you look up one day and realize you cannot remember the last time you felt like yourself.

They feel embarrassed, and that makes it even harder to change. The gap between who they were and who they are seems impossible to bridge, and picking out an outfit is just one more impossible task. To everyone else, they look fine. That, as it turns out, is the loneliest part.

The Proxy

Habituated Style × Emergent Identity

The Proxy is your friend who always looks incredible, whose apartment looks like a Pinterest board, who seems to have figured out some code you haven’t — and who, if you asked them what they actually wanted — would go quiet for just a second too long before answering.

Every piece they own has been vetted, cross-referenced against the people they admire, confirmed by enough outside sources that wearing it feels safe. In a room full of people trying to figure out the right answer, the Proxy is the gold standard. They’re the ones who look like they just belong.

What no one sees is that this ‘taste’, this ‘style’, isn’t actually theirs. They’ve been borrowing it for so long it’s started to feel like their own, and they have an irrational fear that someone is going to ‘figure them out’. They’ve scanned the guest list, checked the tags for dress code, and when someone shows up wearing the exact same thing they picked out, they’re not even mad. Frankly, it’s a relief.

Sometimes they reach for something different, but they always pull back. They talk themselves out of it, and tell themselves its not practical, not really an option.

The Proxy always looks like they know exactly what they’re doing. The question is, are they actually ever doing what they want?

The way you get dressed is a behavioral record. It is not what you intend, it is what you do. And it’s this seemingly small, unconscious daily act that is the most accurate prediction of who you are becoming.

Your style is a self-fulfilling prophecy. You dress for the person you think you are now, and thats exactly who you turn out to be. What a profound waste it would be, to spend your one precious life trying to look like someone else.

Bonjour, my black swans!

Is it just me or did March fly by? I know I’m writing this while it’s still technically March, but my birthday is over so mentally, I’m in April. I am exhausted yet energized, realizing that I might have finally bit off more than I can chew. Ah, but who would I be without the delightful buzz of caffeine in my ear and my prized obsessions?!

A typical Tuesday in the month of March:

Wake up at 6am, hit snooze until 6:15. Carefully get out of bed and tip-toe around the labyrinth that is my polly-pocket sized Manhattan bedroom (without waking Nick or pushing over my bookcase of shoes, therefore waking up Draco and beginning the calamity), brush my teeth (I don’t know how people wait until after coffee, if I wait more than five minutes to brush my teeth I want to rip my gums out), walk around with ice cubes pressed to my collarbones, fish out some kim chi with my bare hands (they’re clean, its not gross), activate morning synth mix and zoooneeee out writing ‘til around 9.

From 9-9:20, I get dressed for my job Method Acting as a Woman in Corporate, and accessorize until my earlobes hurt. On school days, my closet operates like a vending machine, quick n’ easy. But Friday through Sunday, my wardrobe is the buffet at the country club of my dreams. Endless options, unlimited time, back again and again to change, readjust, gorge and make elaborate concoctions. But back to Tuesday. I snatch some food from the fridge, headphones back on and I’m on my way (I wouldn’t call it a run… more of a fierce walk…though if I’ve ever left you a voice memo during this time I know you’re rolling your eyes right now hahaha), to catch the express train. Fridays have a much sexier morning routine, thats when I see my trainer (Hi, Bri!) which produces so many endorphins I feel like a dolphin in a Lisa Frank painting.

The 9-5 flies by, and on the train home I either edit videos or read a book, and I usually select the latter because my eyes are burning. This wouldnt be the case if I didnt forget my blue light glasses, but I was literally sprinting out the door, sooo happens more often than not. When I get home, I shed my exoskeleton and hit the gym as soon as possible (if I make it more than 20 feet or get minorly comfortable, the bet is off). 30 minutes of weights, 40 minutes of cardio, and one Alani energy drink for good luck (have you had the pink slush flavor? It’s the color of the energizer bunny if the energizer bunny was electrocuted. Highly recommend.)

After the gym, i usually check my phone for the first time in hours, and sit on the floor Japanese-style and eat whatever I made on Sunday, which I’ve been pretty good at keeping up with. I have a strict no-plastic rule, so even when I drink my Elixir (Zero Sugar Canada Dry & Dad Grass), it will always be inside some kind of crystal goblet, or a spiky little tumbler. My current programming is either re-runs of The Legend of Vox Machina (the best show ever created, please HURRY UP WITH SEASON 4), The Mighty Nein (same request, for the love of the dawn-father), High Potential, AP Bio, and Bob’s Burgers (who am I without Bobs Burgers reruns?) This usually concludes around 830, when I start to feel the rising yet benevolent pressure to re-focus, which leads to the staying-up-too-late habit I just can’t seem to shake. I try to play Worldle but I suck at it, which is infuriating, so I’ll play Connections, which I’m far better at, and it restores my waning ego.

I cannot wait!

until I have unlimited time to make my wardrobe and jewelry collection into a full-scale potions laboratory. I love giant rings, bulbous jewels, I love to layer and layer until my chiropractor scolds me like a child caught rummaging through great-grandmas armoire. There is so much glamour in the details, the spice and delight of something strange! One of my all-time favorite icons is Iris Apfel, and she is the gold standard for me in all things accessories. She looked like a walking bibliography and I find that so intoxicating. Like my fascination with watching chess savants, I could have just stare at her all day. Fun fact: I tried to win this coat of hers when it went on sale at Christies, but I was beat out by someone who paid more than triple my asking price. As a side note, do we think they dry clean those items before sale, or do you think people want to smell like the person who wore it? Or moreover, do you think people want to be able to smell the person on the item itself, like a way to inhabit, a method-acting horocrux?

I finished The Secret History and have…so many thoughts. One of the biggest things that stood out to me was the style of each of the characters.

The way they were described was so vivid, so real, its one of the few stories I can think of where without the detail of clothing, garments, accessories or lack-thereof, the story would have fallen flat. I want to create study guides, rubrics for my favorite books to discuss these kinds of themes, how clothing is so important even in settings we cant see it, we must imagine it. I think that makes it even more compelling, not to mention the part it plays in power, allegiance, diligence, and mourning.

Standing in front of your wardrobe, you glare into the abyss.

Your fingernails dig into your hips as your index fingers tap an impatient little dance, and for the millionth time you ask yourself: What the fuuuuck am I going to wear?

You scan the tops of hangers and feel the annoyance rising, that specific, familiar irritation of someone who knows they have done this before and cannot believe they are doing it again. Your foot taps. You exhale. You start rifling.

I have to have something.

You do have something. You have everything. And somehow, standing in front of all of it, you have never felt more certain that what you have, in fact, is nothing.

It’s unbelievable; someone who shops as much as you do, who thinks about this as much as you do, should not end up here, at 7am, exhausted before the day has started. This spectacle of decisions is the performance of your lifetime, and you are but a puppet on it’s strings.

That evil little voice, whispering in your ear, telling you that everything looks wrong, it doesn't belong to you. It never did. It belongs to the “audience”, the one you've been performing for every single morning without ever once stopping to ask who they are, where they came from, or why you keep letting them in.

In 1791, Jeremy Bentham designed a prison where the inmates could never tell when they were being watched. They eventually stopped needing guards because the inmates started monitoring themselves so closely, it rang redundant.

Your wardrobe is that prison. And the only person watching you is yourself.

Before you could scroll, there was a watchtower.

Before anyone taught you what an aesthetic was, you already knew how to perform. You learned it at the dinner table. In the school hallway. At your first job where you understood, without anyone saying it directly, what kind of person got taken seriously, and what kind didn’t.

You may have moved, have changed, you may have dreamed of a different way, but one thing has always remained: You have always lived in the tower.*

We are suffering from an epidemic of sameness.

Not because people lack taste. Not because everyone secretly wants to look identical (actually, I could make an argument that people love nothing more than looking like clones, but for the sake of this article I’ll push that thought away). But because the watchtower is so loud, and the performance so exhausting, that most people have quietly made the choice to bow out, to make themselves digestible, to make the easier play. Give the world what it wants before anyone has a chance to say no, before anyone has a chance to look at you twice.

Everyone is dressed, but almost no one is actually present.

People love to blame Instagram and Tiktok, and while theres enough blame to go around, your online life isnt solely responsible for this performance. The version of you that walks into a meeting, the version of you that exists in photographs, and the version of you that stands in front of your wardrobe at 7am, they are all, now, the same continuous audience.

You didn’t escape the prison.
You just forgot you were in it.

The audience in your head isn’t one person. It never was.

It’s a cast of mutilated events, opinions and oppressions all morphed together. They’ve assembled over decades, cast their own parts, and every morning when you stand in front of that wardrobe, every single one of them shows up.

Allow me to introduce!

The Critic!
Every person who ever evaluated you before you were old enough to argue back. A teacher. A parent. A boss in your first “real” job. They said something once about how you presented yourself, something they’ve completely forgotten. But you haven’t.

The Room!
What will they think? Not who specifically, just they. A nameless, faceless consensus you’ve been trying to satisfy since adolescence. The outfit that can’t be too much or too little. The one that says I tried without saying I tried too hard. The Room has never once told you what it actually wants. That’s the point. Uncertainty is what keeps you performing, and look how good you’re doing.

The Wound!
The sharp stab of an insult, the scab you pick just to see if the scar is still there. You tell yourself they don’t matter, youre the one in charge of your life, who cares what they think, anyway. Yet every time you approach it, each time you pick it enough to bleed, you bandage it up with something safer. The thing you stopped wearing…the color you put back…the version of yourself you decided was too much…away she goes, in the back of the closet, where she belongs.

The Person You Were Supposed To Be By Now!
She’s the most exhausting one. She has it together. She dresses like someone who has arrived. She chastises you for wanting to be comfortable, ridicules you each time you skip the gym, mocks you each time you see someone wearing something you long for. She has been five years ahead of you your entire life, and she reminds you every day that she always will be.

None of these people are in the room with you, but each one of them is running your wardrobe. And if they’re the ones in charge, that means you have no idea what you actually look like.

Not what you look like when you’re performing for the Critic, or softening yourself for the Room, or reaching for the person you haven’t become yet. What you look like when the audience is gone and the only question left is: what do I actually want to wear?

Most people have never answered that question.

Because in the panopticon, you are never alone long enough to ask it.

Here’s the part you’re not going to like: You cannot get out by not caring.

I know that’s the fantasy. The capsule wardrobe. The uniform. The deliberate, principled refusal to participate. I don’t think about clothes. I have more important things to focus on. The people who say this believe they have escaped the performance. They have not. They have simply outsourced their identity to someone else, and called it freedom.

The oversized hoodie worn as a statement of “not caring” is still a statement.

The person who wears the same thing every day so they doesn’t have to “think about” it is still being judged by every person, in every room they walk into.

There is no neutral. There is no exit.
There is no version of having a body in public that is not, in some way, a performance.

The people who believe otherwise aren’t free.

They’re just performing a different story about themselves, the story of a person who is somehow above all of this.

And that story?
That story is the most carefully maintained performance of all.

So if there’s no exit, there’s only one option.

You become the architect.

Not the inmate who has stopped “noticing” the tower. Not the person abandoning freedom and lazily calling it power. The architect: The one who looks at the structure directly, sees exactly who built it and why, and decides: this is not my design. Because here’s the thing about a prison you built yourself: You have the blueprint.

Who did I think I was?

That question has been running in the background of every outfit decision you have ever made. It sounds like self-doubt, but i promise, it isn’t. It’s the tower talking, the algorithm, the wound, the room, the person you haven’t become yet, all of them asking you to make yourself smaller, safer, easier, flatter, less.

The question was never who did I think I was.
The question is: who are you dressing for?

And for the first time… that answer gets to be yours.

The Romantic Gothic took root long before it found a name.

Emerging from the fevered imagination of the Romantic movement (discussed earlier here), emotion eclipsed reason and nature was no longer pastoral, but that of the sublime. The Brontë sisters*, alongside figures such as Mary Shelley and Edgar Allan Poe, shifted literature toward intensity rather than civility. In Wuthering Heights*, attachment becomes identity. In Jane Eyre, moral conviction resists social containment, and in Frankenstein, devotion curdles into isolation. Across these works, feeling is not passive, not felt and released. It is destabilizing, it is absolute, and more often than not, it is delightfully, engagingly, murderously destructive.

Early Victorian fashion under Queen Victoria emphasized modesty, structure, and restraint.

After the death of Prince Albert in 1861, Queen Victoria’s mourned his death until her own passing in 1901. The grief of the queen seeped into the lives of her people, as they ritualized the wearing of heavy black garments, jet jewelry, fitted bodices with long sleeves which created very striking, controlled silhouettes. These visual codes of containment and solemnity intersected with Romantic literature’s emphasis on intensity and devotion and created the aesthetic tension between emotional extremity and external discipline, the very foundation of what we now recognize as Romantic Gothic.

Romantic Gothic was not confined to literature, as by the mid to late 19th centruy the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood revived medieval subjects, the beautiful, elongated female figures and richly textured garments that went in the opposite direction of academic classicism. Artists such as John Everett Millais and Dante Gabriel Rossetti emphasized tragic heroines, saturated color, symbolic ornament, and historical dress, reinforcing the Romantic preoccupation with devotion, loss, and moral intensity.

In the twentieth century, designers like Alexander McQueen repeatedly drew from Victorian mourning, Gothic literature, and religious symbolism in collections such as Dante and The Widows of Culloden, restoring corsetry, dark palettes, and ecclesiastical references to high fashion. John Galliano, particularly during his tenure at Christian Dior, reintroduced medieval and Catholic visual codes, including cruciform jewelry, velvet columns, and severe silhouettes.

Dante is the eighth collection by British fashion designer Alexander McQueen, released for the August/Winter 1996 season. Its concept was mainly inspired by the 14th century Florentine poet, writer and philosopher Dante Alighieri and his famous work Divine Comedy.

As fashion moved through modernism, minimalism, and postmodernism, the Romantic Gothic vocabulary persisted in cycles: dark palettes, structured containment, symbolic ornament, and an emphasis on psychological depth over surface decoration. Frankenstein, Jane Eyre, and Wuthering Heights continued to circulate through film, theater, and education, preserving themes of obsession, isolation, and moral extremity.

Romantic Gothic begins with structure. The body must look contained, vertical, and deliberate.

Wardrobe Installation

• Remove shapeless garments.

• Add one structured coat or jacket with vertical emphasis.

• Replace low-rise or casual silhouettes with defined waistlines.

Behavioral Installation

A restricted palette increases coherence, authority, and memorability. When chromatic noise decreases, structure becomes visible.

• Remove bright white and all high-vibrancy color, such as neons and pastels

• Build a five-color capsule with the following guidelines:

  • 1 deep dark: such as black, charcoal,

  • 1 deep warm: such as oxblood, plum, pomegranate

  • 1 deep cool: such as forest, sapphire, emerald

  • 1 neutral (dependent on your skin tone): such as ivory, sand, crystal, gray, bone, cream

  • 1 elemental: such as bronze, pewter, gold, silver. mother of pearl

• Avoid visible logos.

Environmental Installation

• Replace bright overhead lighting with warm lamps.

• Remove acrylic or high-gloss decor.

• ntroduce one dark floral element: deep red roses, dried branches, muted foliage.

Practice:

For five days, repeat the same dark base layer. Build everything around it. Let familiarity replace variety.

PHASE III: TEXTURAL GRAVITY
Days 12–17

Weight changes perception.
Light fabrics read casual. Gloss reads modern. Weight reads committed. Romantic Gothic requires material density.

Wardrobe Installation

• Introduce velvet, wool, matte silk, or structured cotton.

• Remove flimsy synthetics and thin stretch blends.

• Replace overly distressed denim with structured alternatives.

• Add matte leather boots.

• Introduce at least one garment with visible seam structure or tailoring.

• If wearing a cross or cameo, keep the rest of the jewelry minimal, no additional focal points.

Behavioral Installation

• Keep your chin level when referenced.

• Speak one sentence fewer than you normally would.

• Do not play with jewelry while speaking.

• Understand: Romantic Gothic adornment does not seek validation. It tolerates projection.

This is where the aesthetic stabilizes. If Romantic Gothic is to become identity rather than performance, it must be predictable.

Wardrobe Installation

• Repeat the same silhouette five times in one week.

• Rotate the same boots repeatedly.

• Stop shopping entirely for seven days.

• Remove style scrolling from social media.

The goal is recognizability.

Behavioral Installation

• Lower vocal pitch slightly when speaking.

• Practice silence instead of immediate response.

• Remove filler words.

• Delay emotional reactions.

• Keep your pace of movement steady across environments.

• Do not suddenly over-animate in social settings.

Repetition builds expectation. Expectation builds authority.

Curate one full Romantic Gothic look and photograph it in low, natural light. Focus on your posture, your control, your decorations, your palette. Take everything you have learned, and ask yourself:

• Is my silhouette controlled?

• Is my palette disciplined?

• Do the textures in my outfit hold, or weigh me down?

• Is my adornment intentional or for attention?

• If this became your default, what part of you would resist it?

• What standard would you have to uphold to keep it believable?

• What does this look commit you to, and what behavior of yours would contradict it?

If you have accomplished this completely, you will have become someone new, someone worthy of the Romantic Gothic.

Find peace and internal calm in the quest for self, yearn for the devotion to become more than merely mortal, and above all, to thine own self, be true.

POSTURE is the exclusive syllabus on identity, aesthetic reinforcement, and the self-fulfilling nature of style.

If I asked you what you wore three days ago… could you tell me?

Not what you usually wear. Your actual clothes, the color of your shirt, your exact socks, down to the color of your laces.

I’d be willing to bet that you’d probably spend more time trying to remember than you did choosing it.

In a world where attention is the most expensive commodity, we are choosing autopilot and invisibility.

We have become to lazy to look like ourselves.

When I had just graduated from college, I drove to work each day.

Once you get over the jump-scare that is me driving (I was taken off my parents insurance long ago and replaced with the far more responsible choice: my husband) It took me around thirty minutes, and other than the music I blasted from my 2008 Jeep, it was a boring drive. Latte in hand, the same route traversed, those thirty minutes passed as if they barely existed. I’d arrive in the parking lot with this brief flash of panic—Did I stop at that red light? Was there traffic? Obviously, I had arrived safely, but I couldn’t tell you a single detail of how.

The brain, when given repetition, fills in the blanks and checks out. It’s efficient, it’s adaptive, but its dangerous. Because when something becomes daily, expected, normal, it becomes invisible.

When you get dressed, your mind isnt there.

It’s already clocked in, already in that meeting, already panicking about those Valentine’s Day reservations you still haven’t made. Psychologists call this “automaticity”, the brain offloading routine tasks to free up cognitive space. You might know it by its sexier stage name: Multitasking. What it really is, is absence.

You’re thinking about everything except the thing you’re doing.

Multitasking makes us think were productive.

But no matter how you cut it, efficiency will always be the enemy of choice because choice is where your identity actually lives.

We get dressed the same way we use our phones, and we wonder why everyone is starting to look the same.

I talk about this often, this epidemic of sameness that we are experiencing.

In a time where the world is supposed to be our oyster, we jump inside the cozy, blue lights of the algorithm and seek out ways to look the same as everyone around us.

You don’t scroll because you care, you scroll because youre restless.

The reward isn’t meaning; it’s relief. A low-friction stream of stimuli that keeps your brain soothed, occupied, anesthetized.

And just like your clothes, you rarely remember what you consumed.

You got dressed. You arrived. But can you actually say that you were there?

Most people don’t think of themselves as passive. They think of themselves as practical.

Low-maintenance. Busy. Efficient. They tell themselves they know what works, and that knowing what works is the same thing as knowing who they are.

What you fail to see is that you can be both, if not all, of these things at once. You can be incredibly passive and busy, low-maintenance and efficient. None of these are mutually exclusive, and its this very guise that is ruining your perception.

Passivity looks like avoiding decisions that might draw attention, invite comment, or make you explain yourself. It looks like mistaking familiarity for fit (my favorite line: I just like to be comfortable!) because something you’ve worn before feels safer than something you haven’t tried yet.

Have you ever found yourself wearing the same kind of outfit to the same kinds of events? I have a friend who hates dresses, and yet every time a wedding comes around, she seems literally incapable of wearing something other than a floor-length gown. Why is this? Because the socially acceptable, digestable norm is a safer option that going outside your comfort zone to express who you really are. The trial and error is scarier than the knowledge that one day, you’re going to catch your reflection, and have no idea who that person is.

If you’re feeling slightly defensive right now, that’s normal.

If you’re mentally arguing exceptions—but I do think about it sometimes—that’s also normal. This isn’t a test you pass or fail. It’s a mirror. And the funny thing about mirrors is they work whether we like what they show us or not. Don’t shoot the messenger, believe it or not, I’m on your side.

Your brain, my brain, is designed to conserve energy.

When you repeat a behavior often enough, your mind learns that it doesn’t need to stay fully present, and creates a lovely little shortcut.

Psychologists call this a habit loop: cue, routine, reward. The cue is the morning. The routine is getting dressed. The reward is not having to think too hard.

This loop becomes more and more efficient until your brain is able to outsource your options. What you wore yesterday is good enough for today, your attention fragments, part of you is here, but the larger part of you is somewhere else. This is cognitive offloading: using repetition to free up mental space.

Passive consumption, of content, of clothing, of aesthetics, trains acceptance over intention. You become very good at saying “this is fine” and very bad at asking “is this me?”

And herein lies the fatal flaw: when you get so used to autopilot, when you surrender fully to the efficiency machine, you detach yourself from authorship.

You no longer take responsibility for how you look, essentially telling your brain “Eh, I am what I am.” It comes so easily and feel so natural, but its always the sticky-sweet honey trap that swallows us whole in the end.

And now,

as I find myself expanding out of the goo and into my new form, the light feels harsh and the breeze feels cold.

I look back at the cocoon I made, the one I’m so very proud of, and for once, I feel nostalgia. The place I used to dwell, the place I painted walls and hung up photos, where I sprayed lavender on the sheets and lit candles in every room.

I know every inch of this cocoon I spun for myself. I know how each emotion feels, and just how much I have to do in order to stay where I am, right now, which is so much farther than I’ve ever been before. I built my cocoon to keep me safe, to cushion the blow of heavy emotions and block out my ringing ears with thick wads of cotton. I wrapped myself tightly around my precious dreams; I held them so close to my chest I thought they would press through my ribcage and nestle next to my heart, drumming along to my now-steady breathing.

I could scream as loudly as I wanted

and nothing would break; I could sleep for days and be sweetly surrendered to another realm.

My incubator for the dreams I was too afraid to murmur out loud, lest the devil that is practicality should hear and drive me away in shame.

I slept so long, I returned.

I understood, clearly now, that this world, the one that surrounds me, is not enough. My desires and preoccupations are too loud to ignore the obvious truth: A low burn will never produce enough heat to keep me warm. I have to scorch the earth, become the cosmic explosion that forms a new kind of gravity.*

*I’ve always known this, but if you had asked me before to say it out loud, I would have stammered. Cheeks fuming, I would have bit my tongue.

The fear and the loathing.

I think of all the times I was told to be reasonable, practical, to set myself up for success.

I immerse myself in these memories, an ice bath, until my fingernails puncture the skin of my palm and I didnt even realize I was clenching my fists. What is a life, if not lived! Why would I ever want to fall back on anything, when I could fall forward, instead?

Oh, how I have hated myself for all the times I have surrendered to the seduction of comfort, the lies and siren songs of pitiful practicality.

I don’t belong in a cocoon anymore. And that may be a freakish feeling, but at least it is mine.

Because I would rather be terrified, a child whimpering with her arms outstretched in the pitch black, than stand in the light of day with that low, sour pit in my stomach that grows each time I fall short of who i am. Who I know I could be.

My greatest fear is that pit will grow, fester, livid and acidic, consuming me from the inside out, like a worm boring through a rotten apple.

I imagine that I’m standing at the edge of a very long cliff, at the edge of a jagged peak that looms above the ground. I stand with my feet webbed with rocks and earthen rind, and down below, I see you. In pools of moss, green eyes glinting in the moonlight, you wait.

When I look at you I realize I have no fear of heights.

I will jump not when I’m ready, but when I don’t think about it at all.
I don’t think it will feel like a leap; I think it will feel like flying.

The problem isn’t your wardrobe… it’s what your brain does with it

Across clinical descriptions of social anxiety, the most common fear isnt ‘being disliked’, its being seen as “boring, stupid, or incompetent’’, and visibly anxious.

The fear isnt “they wont like me”, its theyll think im boring, I’ll look foolish, they’ll see I dont belong.

It’s not really a fear of social settings, it a fear of being looked through like an x-ray, while having to hear the laughs from those who someone have bones made from diamonds.

In these moments, all your brain wants is clarity. Certainty.

The clothes you wear turn into the proof your brain needs because they are the most visibly obvious thing about you.

Your outfit turns into a story: This is how I’ll come across, this is what they’ll judge me by.

It’s not really your clothes that are causing you to feel this way, its the meaning your brain gives them.

Clothing changes how you act

What you wear is never neutral. No matter what, your brain will always link how others see you as connected to what youre wearing. If there is something humans are very good at, we know the feeling of being watched. And when something you’re wearing feels noticeable, unfamiliar, or loaded with expectation, your body adjusts.

You don’t think: I’m anxious now.
Instead, your behavior shifts.

1. Your attention turns inward

The moment your clothes feel “on display,” part of your focus leaves the room and turns back on you.

You start checking yourself: Do I look strange right now? Am I pulling this off? Are they looking at me weird?

When that happens, your body tightens. You speak more carefully. You move less freely. You stop reacting naturally and start managing yourself.

Nothing is wrong with your outfit, but it’s now operating like a mirror you can’t stop glancing at.

And the more you watch yourself, the harder it is to stay present.

2. Your clothes raise the stakes

Every outfit carries expectations.

Some clothes say: Be sharp! Be capable!

Others say: You’ll be noticed if you wear that... people might will stare...

And some say: This isn’t who you usually are?! You better figure that out, fast!!!

If what you’re wearing feels like it demands more than you’re confident you can deliver, pressure builds. Mistakes feel riskier. Silence feels heavier. Every moment feels like a test.

So you don’t relax into the situation, you contain yourself.

Your brain starts whispering: If you mess up while looking like this, it will be humiliating.

3. Your body feels exposed

Social anxiety isn’t just about being seen. It’s about being seen while struggling.

When clothing feels tight, revealing, eye-catching, or out-of-sync, your body feels less protected.

And when your body feels exposed, it prepares for threat:

• shoulders draw in

• movements shrink

• energy turns inward

You don’t step forward. You brace.

Why you can’t just “fake it till you make it”

You’ve probably heard the advice: Dress like you own the room! Make your OWN confidence!

All of these tropes are meaningless, because if you dont actually feel confident, adding more clothes doesnt help. It just creates pressure.

No matter how composed you are, pressure will leak out in your behavior.

You treat your style like it belongs to a character; someone that only lives in your imagination.

You fill your closet with items you don’t wear, and wonder who stares back at you through the mirror.

Understand: Buying something is not the plunge, wearing it is.

The water doesnt get any warmer the longer you wait.

Be misunderstood

Stop over-explaining, stop over-curating. No logo, core or trend is more ‘you’ than you. This idea that we can only define ourselves through constant consumption, constant checking, following, purchasing, is meaningless. You are not an item. You’re outsourcing your identity for mass appeal.

Don’t round out the edges of your personality to be more palatable for others. If they cut their tongue on your plate of offerings, let them bleed. You have no gods! You have no masters! Sit comfortably in the waters of yourself, imagine new and different ways to appear, to behave, to become. The endless opportunities every single day that your free will allows.

Be ugly

CRAVE SOMETHING MORE THAN THE BEAUTY OTHERS SEEK. Being ugly is the greatest gift you can give yourself. Purposely try to look ugly. THIS is when your style is really going to start expanding because youre going to see something that no one else has. Try something new. Mix things together youre convinced would never go. Wear something you swear would only look good on someone else. Mess it up, tear it down, try again.

Bury the idea that other people should like how you look deep into the frozen ground, hold a funeral for all of the times youve been so cruel to yourself you depended on the validation from others. Other people are nothing. You, my magnificent friend, are everything.

Fail, fail often. Trip while youre sprinting ,and fall so hard your palms bleed. Stare directly in the sun and let the spotted vision blind you to the obstacles in your path. Lick your wounds with neosporin, smack on your dressings with pride.

Abandon the foolish notion that perfection is desirable, and end your ruminations about others. Try something new, something different, not for the sake of pride or glory but for the understanding that each time you fail, your brain rewards you with elasticity. Become proud of your own evolution, bear witness to the magnificent creations you summon into reality.

Long live the individual, with choices strange and chic! Long live the beauty in imperfection, the utmost glory of expressing our human soul!

You are not a misfit toy. You are haute couture, one of a kind. And there is no higher purpose than to bring your imagination to life.

It’s nothing more than a not-so-stylish rebrand of (dry heaves) minimalism.

Before you commit to this doomed personal rebrand, take a good look at yourself and ask, which one of these do you want to be?

A beige, bland, if-you-were-a-spice-you’d-be-flour repeat?

OR

Someone that thinks for themselves?

Do you want to look like this silicon valley, instagram clone, epidemic of sameness?

Or when people look at you, do you want them to see you for the person you are?

If you want good style, then you already understand that your taste is currently sitting as un-lived potential.

If you want to communicate who you are through purchasing a new wardrobe, then you need to stop letting other people, WHO LOOK LIKE OTHER PEOPLE, tell you what to wear.

You need to ask yourself the following:

• What do I like? Stop thinking about clothes. What do you like?

• What books do you like to read? What characters do you identify with? What are your favorite colors, what are your favorite memories? Who are the people that you like to be with? What inspires you?

• If you ever find yourself thinking ‘I like this, but I dont know if [fill in the blank mystery person that you don’t actually know] does… STOP. START OVER.

Once you have identified what you, yourself, enjoy, like, are inspired by, only then should you begin curating your wardrobe. Purchasing anything before this point is a waste of time and money, and the only thing you’re going to prove is that you have a really big fetish for copy and paste.

You are never going to have good style by looking like someone else.

There is no magic formula. There is not right amount of beige or perfect amount of cable knit that replaces the work of finding out who you are.

And spoiler alert? It’s going to change.
Hopefully, a lot.
Hopefully, all the time.

The people who look the best are not the people that take style advice. They’re the ones who create their own style. Who relentlessly, joyously, passionatly, find themselves again and again and again. The people that we look up to years later, when what they did then becomes fashionable now.

Be ugly. Be weird.

Scrape the palatable conglomerate of the masses off your tongue and reach for a new taste. Your style is a self-fulfilling prophecy, and every day, YOU write the script.

Under the clicks of ballpoint pens, written in invisible ink on the pages of a new calendar, there’s a single phrase relentlessly keeping time: one day.

One day, we’ll look good enough to wear what we want.
One day, we’ll have enough money saved for that trip.
One day, going to the gym will be as easy as slipping on trainers.
One day, we’ll get over our fear of judgement.
One day, we’ll will finally look in the mirror and see the person we were supposed to become.

One day.

The intensity of our planning, of this feeling, isn’t calm or hopeful. It’s urgent. Oily, it bubbles on top of our stomachs and burns like a corrosive, acidic layer.

We don’t plan because we’re organized.
We plan because we are afraid of staying the same.

What took me 30 years to understand is the person you’re planning for doesn’t exist. THE ONLY PERSON THAT EXISTS IS THE ONE WHO KEEPS MAKING THE SAME PROMISES.

The pressure we believe is necessary to creating lasting change is not the pressure that forms the diamond — because becoming the person you want to be is not the prize you receive for finishing The Work.

Your ‘new identity’ is not a reward.

It is the condition. It is, in fact, the very condition necessary for the behavior you seek to become automatic.

And until you realize this, your efforts to change will always fail.

It’s time to do something radically different.

You need to start at the end.

I think, therefore I am

When we make decisions, our brain operates in present tense, with what we think, feel and know, now. When we plan our life based on things were not currently experiencing, its guesswork.

Were trying to reverse-engineer our feelings: Assuming that if we do x, we will feel y, which will result in z.

The reason this fails is because its imaginary. You’re trying to mimic someone elses end results into your own life. We dont know how we will behave under conditions we’ve never experienced, because experience is the only thing that will allow us to understand our behavior.

You keep telling yourself you’re not who you want to be, instead of acting like you are.

Let’s say my goal is to dress better each day for work. And lets assume I woke up on a frigid Manhattan morning, where all I want to do is be warm, and comfortable.

I might think: You said you were going to dress better, but honestly, who can do this in this weather? I’m just want to be comfortable, I’ll start on a warmer day, or at least on a day I wake up earlier.

Now, what if I started from the end, instead?
What if I already was the person who dressed well for work, each day.

I would think: Man, it is freezing outside. That sweatshirt looks so cozy; I can’t wait to wear that when I get home. How about a sweater? Where’s that violet one I like…I bet I could wear that belt I bought last year with this… and of course flats on the subway but when I get to work, I can change into my favorite pumps….now, what earrings can I grab…

Do you see the difference?

When you behave as though you are already the kind of person who does what you’re trying to do, your mind recalibrates in real time. Decisions become simpler because they are no longer hypothetical. They are contextual.

You are not who you want to be. You are who you think you are.

How to begin today:

• If your goal is saving money: Set one automatic transfer to your savings account, today. Pick an amount small enough that you won’t turn it off next month. $5 is enough. It’s better than zero, no?

• If your goal is confidence: Speak first once per day, even if your contribution is brief or imperfect. Do not wait for ‘the perfect time’. If someone got your coffee order wrong, that’s as good a time as any.

Dress for the job you want, not the one you have

Thinking about something doenst make it real.

Mental rehearsal is a very powerful tool, but most people are using it very, very wrong.

When you visualize something, you are doing so in the present, but you are thinking of yourself in the future. Your brain takes both of these elements and uses them as confirmation of your present identity: Someone who thinks, but does not act.

If you don’t pair your thought with action, it will never manifest.

You’ll begin to see this, constantly:

• Spending hours online filling carts with clothes you want to wear but never purchase

• Reading all sorts of different recipes yet never getting the necessary ingredients

• Wanting to appear differently but resorting to your old ways

• Wanting to be more confident but never putting yourself in a position that would require it

The mistake is believing that rehearsal itself moves you forward.

What actually moves you forward is crossing a threshold, even (especially) poorly. Action introduces resistance, feedback, and adjustment. Rehearsal does not. Without failure, there is no success.

How to begin today:

• If you want to be bolder: go to your closet and ask yourself, What would I wear, to be bold? Is it a bright color? A statement ring? When you go out tonight, wear it.

• If you want to be a better chef: Sharpen your knives. When you use them, they’ll be ready. Practice what someone who is a good chef would already do.

Motivation is a myth

William James said it best: we do not run because we feel brave, we feel brave because we run.

Waiting for confidence to arrive is self-sabotage. If you want to feel confident, you must do things that currently make you feel uncomfortable, so that later, they will come naturally. No one gets to skip practice on their way to mastery.

What creates clarity is movement. Movement towards your goals.

When you begin, even without confidence, your mind starts organizing meaning around what you are already doing.

“I do this, therefore I am this kind of person.”

If I decided that I wanted to be elegant, I would do things that confirm this belief: I would ensure my manicure was well-maintained, set monthly appointments at the salon. I would iron my trousers, take time to deep condition my hair and exfoliate my body, throw out old perfumes and wear fragrances that align with who I am. I would eat well for clear skin, exercise often for good posture. I would read printed books and wear lipstick even while in my bathrobe. I would do these things until the act of doing them is so second-nature, my subconscious would complete them on auto-pilot.

How to begin today:

• If you want to look better: Make personal grooming non-negotable. Even if youre rushing, even if you have 5 minutes, use it differently. This can be as simple as using a white strip for 3 minutes instead of the recommended 30, or putting your hair in a slick-back instead of a messy pony.

• If you want to be more creative: Doodle on your notes. Write one poem a day, and throw it out. Read a new kind of book. Dance for 5 minutes in a stairwell. Watch Bob Ross instead of [fill in the blank].

You don’t get to do something by not doing it…and you have free will, remember?

You don’t become who you want. You become what you repeat.

Your style is a self-fulfilling prophecy, not because clothes are magical, but because they are one of the most consistent behaviors you repeat every day. Identity forms around what you do consistently, not what you promise yourself.

You, a singular, magnificent being, have the power to be whoever you want to be.

This coursework is a reminder that we don’t dress as ourselves, we dress towards ourselves. Each day we get to decide who we choose to become.

Style as Evidence

Your style is a self-fulfilling prophecy.

What you wear shapes how you behave, how the world responds, and who you eventually become. Therefore, style is not metaphorical. It’s behavioral.

To this day, when I hear the pitch of that piano key, the thump of the bass, I feel my head start to swim.

I can feel her singing as if she’s right in front of me; I can feel the power in the baseline that thumps with my heartbeat. I feel like she transferred all of her emotions into my chest; every memory so amplified I see it all right in front of me, as if I was watching a film of my life.

Amy Winehouse was a living paradox. She could come off sharp, even aggressive, and yet she was impossibly warm, charming, and bold. Her curls piled high on her head, her raspy laugh filling the room, she carried a mischievous charm that contrasted beautifully with a voice that sounded like it belonged to someone decades older. She seemed completely at home in herself. She felt familiar, like a friend who’d tease your hair before a party, then lean in to warm your lash curler with a struck match, smiling like it was nothing at all.

Its impossible to separate who she was with how she dressed because Amy Winehouse was a master of personal style. I don’t know if it was intentional; I don’t know if her best looks were created in five minutes or 5 hours, but however they ended up; they belonged entirely to her.

The Signature

Presentation as clarity

Unlike most, Amy was fully herself from a very young age.

Long, dark hair that went past her shoulders, a cheeky grin that perfectly matched her tomboyish charm. She sang because she loved to sing, skipped class when she felt like it and was never running short on opinions.

Friends talked about how sure she was of her taste, how deeply she loved jazz, how seriously she took music, even when she didn’t take much else seriously. She dressed the way she liked, for the life she was already living. Everything she wore looked like she grabbed it as she ran out the door. I dont know if she ever felt the need to think twice.

As her life moved into larger rooms, her look became more defined. The hair went higher, the liner thicker, the dresses closer to the body with a neckline that went as low as the beehive went high. She didn’t dress to impress. She dressed the way people do when they’re comfortable in their own skin.

This is what the Signature looks like when it’s lived, not performed. Appearance as authorship. Style as a quiet extension of self-knowledge.

Amy knew who she was. And she wore it with ease.

The Seeker

(Deliberate + Neutral)
Presentation as experiment

After the global success of Back to Black, Amy’s life began to unravel. She was in a deeply volatile relationship with her on-again, off-again boyfriend. Drug use escalated within the relationship, and their dynamic became a primary emotional driver in her life. At the same time, her father decided to re-introduce himself into her life, with several documented incidents show he intentionally blurred the boundaries between parental care, management, and exploitation.

The tabloids followed her relentlessly. She was photographed leaving clubs, entering cars, crying, bleeding, laughing, collapsing. One of the most cited moments occurred in St. Lucia, where Amy had gone to recover, and her father arrived with a camera crew, turning a fragile period into content.

This is where her appearance begins to look inconsistent, not because she was searching for a new identity, but because maintaining consistency required energy she no longer had. Makeup smeared. Clothing fit poorly or slipped out of place. Her style began to change, but not in the way people like to describe it. She wasn’t trying to experiment, she was beginning to feel exhausted.

This is the Seeker. Not as reinvention, but as exposure.

Unlike Bourdain, whose Seeker phase expanded him into the world, Amy’s Seeker phase was an inward collapse. Her appearance started reflecting the effort it took just to show up. The uniform that so clearly defined her now demanded energy she was already spending elsewhere.

She was still choosing, still trying, but the certainty that once guided her style had been interrupted by a life that no longer felt like her own.

The Ghost

(Disengaged + Withdrawn)
Presentation as survival.

In the final years of her life, her appearance lost its cohesion. The elements people associated with her appeared haphazardly, tangled and matted. Her larger-than-life hair deflated, her makeup appeared watery, as if she was hanging on by a thread. It was impossible to mistake her for anyone else, but she was a shell of the woman she was.

Her life narrowed. Her health deteriorated. Attempts at recovery were repeatedly interrupted by demands to perform. She was moved from place to place, scheduled, put onstage even when she was visibly unwell. The most public example came in Belgrade in 2011, where she was pushed into performing despite clear incapacity and was met with boos from the crowd. The footage circulated immediately.

The images twist my stomach, watching her hold herself so desperately as if her footing in reality depended on it. She was ripped of her personality; devoid of the passion that summoned her talent, and propped up on stage for our enjoyment.

The Ghost is Disengaged and Withdrawn.
This alignment forms when someone no longer has the capacity to maintain themselves in public. Appearance becomes incidental because survival takes precedence over expression.

What disappeared wasn’t her taste or her talent. It was her sense of self.

The breakdown of upkeep, the collapse of form, the evidence was there, long before the end.

From the outside, it’s easy to read this as neglect, apathy, or collapse. But in reality, she was surrounded by people who needed her functioning more than they needed her well.

The Transformation

The Signature → The Seeker → The Ghost
Her style wasn’t costume or rebellion. It was evidence. And when you read it through the Alignment Chart, the pattern becomes unmistakable: The woman she knew, the woman she tried to hold together, and the woman she collapsed into being.

Style does not hide the truth. It reveals it. Sometimes long before the person wearing it can say it out loud.

People tend to talk about Amy Winehouse in extremes.

As genius or cautionary tale. As talent or tragedy. But what’s easy to forget is how human she was in the ways that mattered most.

We love her because we envy the grace she had, the non-preformative way she went about her life. We all want a friend like her, we want to be the friend that’s like her. Amy showed up as she was, long before the world began pulling her apart.

She will never be defined by her lows, because no matter how lost she was, she still found a way to give to the world during her greatest time of need. When everyone turned their back on her, when we ridiculed her, patronized her, abandoned her, Amy gave a gift to this world that still numbs our own sadness to this day. Amy was never glamorous, Amy was real, and when we think of her, thats the feeling that remains.

What survives isn’t the spectacle. It’s the sincerity.
And for me, that’s enough.

The Whimsical Professional is a professional disco cowgirl, a playful rogue who considers being ten minutes late to a meeting a brush with the wild side.

She feels like the main character in a sunrise-tinted Wes Anderson film, powered by a solid nine hours of sleep and an artisanal latte. She’s the first one in the office, knows the correct way to organize a TSA bin, and would absolutely keep a running list of gold stars if someone would just start handing them out. She’s not quite the teacher’s pet, but she is the model student, the one who remembers her teacher’s birthday, favorite color, partner’s name, and astrological sign without trying.

Her whimsy is sincere, almost childlike in the best way. She sees the good in people, in situations, in life itself. She’s the person you ask for vintage movie recommendations or the best Chinese takeout spot. She loves color and pattern, experiments freely, dabbles in trends without clinging to them, and dresses with the quiet confidence of someone who genuinely enjoys getting dressed.

Her style reflects that same optimism. She gravitates toward soft structure and friendly silhouettes, wide-leg trousers, patterned knits, button-downs with a little personality. She treats color as a given, not a statement, and wears patterns the way others wear neutrals. Nothing feels overly styled or precious, everything looks wearable, repeatable, and lived in. Her wardrobe feels less like a plan and more like good company.

The Whimsical Professional wears her heart on her sleeve and has a charming ability to look creative without effort. Her outfits are composed through a simple equation: simple pieces, good colors, one pop of pizazz that pulls everything together, which paradoxically is the very detail that allows her to stand out. Walking through the double doors, your presence casts a spell that shifts the gravity around you. As if the room has gone underwater, the music softens, and you feel everyones gaze slowly magnetize towards you. Words pause, pupils dilate, you feel all eyes roaming from your head to your toes, transfixed by your elusive blend of intention and ease. For one suspended second, you feel the present moment press against your skin. And just before the room snaps back into motion, the music rising to full volume, there’s a clean, unmistakable flicker: Pride, clarity, and the rare satisfaction of being seen exactly as you meant.

The fantasy feels effortless, and the reality rarely is.

Presence isn’t a personality trait; it’s an engineered effect. You can shock, you can awe, you can make people uncomfortable: Whatever you do most deliberately is what embeds itself in people’s minds, clinging there with the tenacity of a fly on tack paper.

There are 3 micro-habits that do the most damage.

1. “I’m just throwing something on.”

When you say “I’m just throwing something on,” the intention usually feels harmless: a low-energy choice, something easy enough to get you out the door. But what you’re unintentionally signaling is avoidance, a desire to be seen in the most frictionless, mentally inexpensive way possible.

Here’s what this looks like:

• You reach for a tried and true neutral because it “goes with anything”

• You put on denim chosen out of habit rather than intention

• You skip the pieces with structure or presence because they demand commitment, you perceive them as requiring more attention

This isn’t laziness. It’s reluctance disguised as ease. and that indecision is far more visible than people realize.

The problem isn’t simplicity, it’s the lack of intention. When the pieces don’t relate, the outfit acts like elevator music: designed to bother no one, but memorable to no one. It fades instantly because there’s no point of view tying anything together. When silhouette, palette, and texture don’t relate, the impression isn’t minimalist; it’s unfinished.

You may feel entirely present. But visually, the room doesn’t receive presence. It receives ambiguity. No direction. No authorship. No clear narrative of who entered the space. And if you don’t offer the first impression, people supply their own.

The Adjustment
